Wizards make final cuts

(10/24/2013) The Wizards have released shooting guard Xavier Silas on Thursday, according to USA Today. Silas played in only three preseason games and totaled only 10 minutes of game action this preseason. He averaged 4.0 points per game.

Washington also released Pops Mensah-Bonsu and Josh Childress.

(3/4/2009) The San Antonio Spurs have released forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu in what may be a space-clearing move to add veteran free agent forward Drew Gooden. Gooden cleared waivers from Sacramento, where the 6-foot-10 forward played in just one game after being traded from Chicago. The Spurs would not comment on reports saying they might pick up Gooden. Gooden would give San Antonio another much-needed big man to challenge the Los Angeles Lakers if the Western Conference's top two teams were to meet in the playoffs. Mensah-Bonsu signed a 10-day contract with the Spurs on Feb. 25. He played in three games, averaging 5 points and 3.3 rebounds in limited minutes.

The 6-foot-9, 240-pound Mensah-Bonsu averaged 12.6 points and 6.7 rebounds for George Washington last season. He led the Colonels in field-goal percentage (56.4 percent) and blocks (38) and is second on the school's all-time blocks list with 141.
