Cavaliers' Shawn Marion says he will retire after the season

(1/21/2015) Wanting to depart on his own terms, Cavaliers forward Shawn Marion said he plans to retire after the season, reports The Arizona Republic.

Marion is in his 15th NBA season and said watching his son grow up while he deals with the rigors of the NBA has been difficult.

"The biggest thing is having a son. I got attached to him. Seeing him periodically is hard," Marion said. "Watching him grow up on pictures and videos is hard."

Marion, 36, was drafted by the Suns in 1999 and said his biggest regret was not winning a championship in Phoenix.

"It's been a great ride," Marion said. "I really wish I could've brought a championship to Phoenix. But it was awesome."

Marion is averaging only 5.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in 38 games for the Cavaliers, but said his career was made while playing nine seasons in Phoenix and he hopes to join their Ring of Honor.

"It'd be hard not to have me up there when you look at what I did," Marion said.

Marion has been dealing with a hip injury, which caused him to miss the last two games. In 34 games, Marion is averaging 5.8 points and 3.7 rebounds.

The Cavaliers are 4-point underdogs.

Marion missed Friday’s loss to the Warriors after suffering a hip injury during Monday’s game against the 76ers. His next chance to play will Tuesday at Phoenix.

Love and Marion were initially considered "highly questionable" by coach David Blatt. Marion is set to miss his second straight game due to an ankle injury. Love is dealing with back spasms, but had hoped to play on Wednesday. 

LeBron James had already been ruled out of the contest, leaving the team short-handed against Milwaukee.

Coach David Blatt initially put LeBron James in the same category, but ruled James out for the contest just a few moments later. Marion missed Tuesday's game due to an ankle injury, and appears to be in danger of missing another contest with the injury. Love is dealing with a back injury, and didn't feel good when he arrived at the arena Wednesday. The team is working on him in hopes that he can suit up.

Marion scored two points on 1 of 3 shooting in nine minutes before leaving with the injury, adding two rebounds and one assist, but he able to take the court in the second half.

(11/10/2014) Cavaliers coach Dave Blatt said Sunday veteran Shawn Marion will remain in the starting lineup at shooting guard for the "foreseeable future," according to The News-Herald. Marion has started the last two games at shooting guard since supplanting Dion Waiters in the starting lineup.

Marion has averaged 28 minutes since joining the starting lineup. He had no points in his first start Wednesday at Utah, but came back to total 10 points, six rebounds and two assists in his second start Friday at Denver.

Marion did not return to the game after the incident, finishing with seven points on 3 of 5 from the floor, including 1 of 1 from behind the arc. He chipped in with three rebounds, one assist, one steal and two blocks in 18 minutes of game action.

(2/22/2014) Mavericks forward Shawn Marion followed a 22-point effort on Friday with a double-double Saturday night against the Pistons in Detroit.

Marion scored 10 points on 5 of 12 shooting from the field, missing all three of his attempts from 3-point land. He completed the double-double with 11 rebounds, four of which came from the offensive end of the glass. He also chipped in with two assists and one steal while logging 31 minutes. 

It was Marion's eighth double-double of the season, two of them have come in February. He has averaged 9.8 points and 6.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists over his last five games.

Marion played 33 minutes in the game, but failed to make much of an impact on the box score. He scored just eight points on 3 of 6 shooting, his fifth game in a row in single figures. He added just two rebounds and one assist, though he also snagged three steals while turning the ball over just once in a 110-96 win.

Marion is averaging just 7.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game over the last five.

Marion returned from the injury on Wednesday and scored 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting in a 129-127 loss to the Clippers. He is averaging 10.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in five January games.
