The Pelicans will receive Asik, Casspi and $1.5 million cash from Houston. The Rockets will get Ariza, Gee and a 2015 protected first-round pick from the Pelicans. The Wizards will receive Melvin Ely 's unguaranteed contract and a $8.5 million trade exception.

Report: Rockets sending Omer Asik to New Orleans

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/26/2014) The Pelicans and Rockets have agreed to a deal to send center Omer Asik to New Orleans in exchange for a protected first-round pick in 2015, Yahoo.com reported Wednesday.

Asik is coming off a disappointing season, as injuries and an inconsistent role forced him into a career-low in minutes played. He missed 34 games for the Rockets, after appearing in each regular season game in the first three seasons of his career. Asik averaged just 5.8 points and 7.9 rebounds, though he did so in 20.2 minutes per game, with 29 of his appearances coming as a reserve.

Asik will likely serve as the Pelicans' starter at center, a position they filled last year with Greg Stiemsma, Alexis Ajinca and Jason Smith. The deal cannot be finalized until after Thursday's draft.

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4/16/2014) The Rockets will be shorthanded for the season finale Wednesday against the Pelicans, in preparation for the start of the postseason. (3/17/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik got the start for an injured Dwight Howard on Monday, and recorded his first double-double of the season in a 124-86 win over the Jazz.

Asik scored 12 points on 5 of 12 from the field, and 2 of 4 from the free throw line. He grabbed 11 boards, four of which came from the offensive end of the glass. He also chipped in with one block while logging 28 minutes of game action. He is averaging 5.8 points and 5.8 rebounds over his last five contest.

Rockets exploring Omer Asik trade before deadline

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(2/18/2014) The Rockets have renewed their efforts to trade center Omer Asik before the deadline, with the 76ers emerging as a potential trade partner, CBSSports.com NBA insider Ken Berger reports.

The Rockets are looking for a first-round pick in return for Asik, but that's an asking price the 76ers are unlikely to meet. The teams had previous trade talks regarding the center in December but couldn't agree to a deal. Asik, who will make $8.4 million both this season and next, has averaged 3.9 points and 6.5 rebounds over 20 games played.

Omer Asik silent in long-awaited return

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2/8/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik finally made his return to action Saturday against the Bucks, after missing more than two months with knee and thigh injuries.

He played a limited role off the bench, recording just 11 minutes, but made an impact on the glass with five rebounds. He added a pair of rebounds, but went scoreless and did not even attempt a shot in the 101-95 win.

Bogut was playing a pretty limited role prior to his injury, and he will almost certainly return to that now that he is healthy. He was averaging 4.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game through his first 17 appearances.

Omer Asik will not be on minutes limit, coach says

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/8/2014) After missing 31 games due to knee and thigh issues, Rockets center Omer Asik is expected to return Saturday against Milwaukee, and will not be on a minutes limit, head coach Kevin McHale told the Houston Chronicle.

"I'm going to play him some," McHale said. "I don't know how much. A lot will depend on his wind and his feel. We'll just watch him, but get him out some. He'll have limitations. Is it going to be two minutes, three minutes, four minutes, five minutes? I’ll just go by feel and eyesight."

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2/5/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik is continuing to recover from a knee injury, and coach Kevin McHale told reporters he expects Asik "back on the court sooner than later."

Omer Asik timetable still murky

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2/4/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik has been able to take part in active rehab on the court over the last week, but it is still not clear when he will be able to return to practice with the team as he recovers from knee and thigh injuries. However, coach Kevin McHale did tell the Houston Chronicle Tuesday, he has "kind of" been given an indication that Asik could be back within 7-10 days.

Asik has not played since Dec. 2, and has not really had a concrete timetable at any point. He was averaging 4.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game prior to the injury.

Omer Asik hoping to return in late January

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1/18/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik continues to recover from thigh and knee injuries, and the Houston Chronicle reported Saturday he is targeting a return toward the end of January.

Asik has not played since Dec. 2, and was averaging just 4.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in 17 appearances prior to the injury.

Omer Asik taking slower approach to recovery

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1/6/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik told reporters Monday that he feels as if there will be no further setbacks is he takes a slower approach to his recovery process, according to the Houston Chronicle. He has not indicated a timetable for his return.

Asik suffered a bruised right thigh against the Jazz Dec. 2. and has missed 16 straight games after dealing with swelling in his right knee. The swelling returned each time he tried to increase the workload in his rehab, which result in Asik having his knee drained.

"We didn't know because the MRIs and other things didn't show anything serious," Asik said. "We didn't know it was going to take this long. Of course, it changes body to body. Everybody's body is different. It feels much better. It's getting stronger. Now, it's more stable. I feel much stronger. This way – we're going slower – I think helps me a lot. I will be (able to) come back stronger."

Berger: Rockets more likely to keep Omer Asik now

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1/3/2014) The Rockets set a self-imposed deadline for trading center Omer Asik in December, and it looks like they are going to stick with it.  According to CBSSports.com NBA Insider Ken Berger, the Rockets are looking more likely to retain Asik's services past the Feb. 20 trade deadline.

The embittered center has reportedly requested numerous trades since the team's signing of Dwight Howard this offseason, and the failure of the two big men to play together in the starting lineup made it seem like a trade was inevitable. However, Asik has been sidelined for weeks with knee and thigh troubles, and his $15 million salary (albeit with a lower cap hit) stands in the way of any deal.

Asik is averaging just 4.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game this season, well off the career-best pace he set as a starter last season.

Omer Asik works out, still not ready to return

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1/2/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik was able to work out Thursday morning, according to the Houston Chronicle, but will not play in the team's next game Friday against the Knicks. After working out, Asik went to see a doctor who has been monitoring the swelling in his knee.

Asik has missed 15 games as a result of the injury. He has been limited to just 18.3 minutes per game in his 17 appearances this season, and has requested a trade numerous times after being sent to the bench.

Rockets not dealing Omer Asik

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12/20/2013) The Rockets set a self-imposed deadline of Dec. 19 to trade disgruntled backup center Omer Asik, and have spent the last few weeks actively fielding offers for him. When no offers met their needs, the team pulled Asik off the table Thursday, according to numerous media reports.

Asik, who has reportedly been requesting trades since the signing of Dwight Howard this offseason, is currently dealing with a thigh injury, and hasn't been playing much even when healthy this season.

Asik thrived as the team's starter a year ago, averaging 10.1 points and 11.7 rebounds per game while starting all 82 games. However, this season he is averaging just 4.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game, while playing in just 17 of the first 26 games.

Omer Asik set to return Tuesday

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(11/18/2013) Though ESPN.com reported over the weekend that a trade seems like an inevitability after he missed two games with an illness, Rockets center Omer Asik was back at practice Monday.

Asik, who was benched three games ago after opening the season as a starter, will be in uniform for Tuesday's game against the Celtics, according to the Houston Chronicle. Asik has reportedly requested numerous trades since the team signed Dwight Howard, who told the team's official website he can sympathize with Asik's feelings.

"He apologized for it and we have to move on, Howard said. "We can't dwell on it. We can't make it an issue. Like I said, we have to love him at the point where he is now and keep on loving him. It's a tough situation and we all have to be understanding and empathize with him and keep moving forward."

Asik has appeared in nine of the team's first 11 games, averaging 5.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. His role on the team moving forward is not yet known.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Coach Kevin McHale would not give details as to why Asik is unavailable, according to the Houston Chronicle.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Asik has yet to top eight points in a game and has not posted at least 10 rebounds in a game since doing so in each of his first two contests this season.

Omer Asik asks Rockets for trade

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(11/14/2013) Rockets center Omer Asik has requested a trade, the Houston Chronicle reports. He played just four minutes Wednesday, failing to score a point for the first time this seaso.

“"I would say the situation is very frustrating right now and we?re trying to work through it,?" his agent told the Chronicle. "For Omer, the objective has always been to continue to develop and grow as a player. That’?s why we came to Houston in the first place. If that objective can?’t be met, if we can’?t get the right platform to grow and contribute as a player, it’?s certainly frustrating.?"

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com

Howard matched a career high in a 96-83 win over the Bobcats, as he racked up 26 rebounds. He added 17 points as well, on 8 of 14 shooting, with two blocks and two assists, while turning the ball over four times.

Howard started next to Omer Asik at power forward, and the duo combined for 40 rebounds, more than the Bobcats' team as a whole.

Omer Asik set to start Rockets' season opener

by Joe Polito | CBSSports.com
(10/29/2013) Despite the fact that new center Dwight Howard has said he doesn’t like sharing the paint with another big man, the Rockets have reportedly decided that Omer Asik will start alongside him in Wednesday’s season opener, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Asik started all 82 games last season at center for the rockets. He’ll be inserted at power forward for Houston’s opening night matchup with Charlotte.
