According to Utah's radio announcer, Asik "seems unlikely" to play Saturday night against the Jazz. If Asik is unable to play, the team will likely have Alexis Ajinca in the starting lineup to replace him.

Asik is averaging 9.0 points, 10.0 boards and 1.3 blocks through his first eight games played. The Pelicans are taking a cautious approach with their center, who will now have a couple extra days to rest his injured back. His next chance to return will come Friday at Denver.

Pelicans C Omer Asik delivers 14-17 line in opener Tuesday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(10/28/2014) Pelicans center Omer Asik scored 14 points on 7 of 10 shooting while adding 17 rebounds, five blocks and two assists in 34 minutes in his team's 101-84 season-opening win over the Magic Tuesday.

Asik missed all three of his free-throw attempts, but it was a fine performance as he teamed up with Anthony Davis (26 points, 17 rebounds, nine blocks) to wreak havoc around the rim on both sides of the court. Asik endured a down year last season but managed to average a double-double while playing 30 minutes per game in 2012-13 (and appearing in all 82 games). He'll look to keep rolling Saturday against the Mavericks.

Tyreke Evans will be at small forward in Pelicans starting lineup

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/28/2014) Pelicans coach Monty Williams told reporters Monday guard Tyreke Evans will start at small forward in Tuesday's season opener against the Magic. Though, it comes as little surprise since Evans started the final two preseason games at small forward, according to the team's official website.

The rest of the starting lineup will be Jrue Holiday at point guard, Eric Gordon at shooting guard, Anthony Davis at power forward and Omer Asik at center.

Omer Asik ready to clean up in return to starting role

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/17/2014) Last season was a rough one for Omer Asik, who had to deal with returning to a reserve role after really shining as a starter the previous year. He should be much happier with his role this season, as the Pelicans acquired him this offseason with the intention of installing him as the starting center.

The Pelicans should have a fearsome frontcourt with Asik starting next to Anthony Davis, and Davis' presence should free Asik up to do the kind of work he excels at. Asik isn't a great offensive player, but he can be a dominant offensive rebounder, and should have many chances to clean up the boards with teams keying in on Davis offensively. Among players who have logged at least 5,000 minutes in the NBA, Asik is 22nd all-time in offensive rebounding percentage.

Asik had trouble staying healthy last season, but that was the first time he had ever missed a regular-season game in his career, so we can probably write that off as a fluke. He averaged a double-double with 1.1 blocks per game in 30.0 minutes per game two years ago, and should be capable of similar production as he returns to a starting role.

Asik should be viewed as a starting Fantasy option this season, though he may not have the upside of some other younger centers at this point.

Wizards, Rockets, Pelicans finalize three-team deal

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(7/14/2014) The Wizards, Rockets and Pelicans have agreed to a three-team trade involving Trevor Ariza, Alonzo Gee, Omer Asik and Omri Casspi, David Aldridge of NBA.com reports on Sunday.

The Pelicans will receive Asik, Casspi and $1.5 million cash from Houston. The Rockets will get Ariza, Gee and a 2015 protected first-round pick from the Pelicans. The Wizards will receive Melvin Ely 's unguaranteed contract and a $8.5 million trade exception.

Report: Rockets sending Omer Asik to New Orleans

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(6/26/2014) The Pelicans and Rockets have agreed to a deal to send center Omer Asik to New Orleans in exchange for a protected first-round pick in 2015, Yahoo.com reported Wednesday.

Asik is coming off a disappointing season, as injuries and an inconsistent role forced him into a career-low in minutes played. He missed 34 games for the Rockets, after appearing in each regular season game in the first three seasons of his career. Asik averaged just 5.8 points and 7.9 rebounds, though he did so in 20.2 minutes per game, with 29 of his appearances coming as a reserve.

Asik will likely serve as the Pelicans' starter at center, a position they filled last year with Greg Stiemsma, Alexis Ajinca and Jason Smith. The deal cannot be finalized until after Thursday's draft.

Jeremy Lin, Omer Asik among resting Rockets

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(4/16/2014) The Rockets will be shorthanded for the season finale Wednesday against the Pelicans, in preparation for the start of the postseason. James Harden and Chandler Parsons are out of the starting lineup, while key reserves Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik will join them on the bench in order to receive some rest.

Omer Asik posts first double-double of season

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/17/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik got the start for an injured Dwight Howard on Monday, and recorded his first double-double of the season in a 124-86 win over the Jazz.

Asik scored 12 points on 5 of 12 from the field, and 2 of 4 from the free throw line. He grabbed 11 boards, four of which came from the offensive end of the glass. He also chipped in with one block while logging 28 minutes of game action. He is averaging 5.8 points and 5.8 rebounds over his last five contest.

Rockets exploring Omer Asik trade before deadline

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(2/18/2014) The Rockets have renewed their efforts to trade center Omer Asik before the deadline, with the 76ers emerging as a potential trade partner, CBSSports.com NBA insider Ken Berger reports.

The Rockets are looking for a first-round pick in return for Asik, but that's an asking price the 76ers are unlikely to meet. The teams had previous trade talks regarding the center in December but couldn't agree to a deal. Asik, who will make $8.4 million both this season and next, has averaged 3.9 points and 6.5 rebounds over 20 games played.

Omer Asik silent in long-awaited return

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2/8/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik finally made his return to action Saturday against the Bucks, after missing more than two months with knee and thigh injuries.

He played a limited role off the bench, recording just 11 minutes, but made an impact on the glass with five rebounds. He added a pair of rebounds, but went scoreless and did not even attempt a shot in the 101-95 win.

Bogut was playing a pretty limited role prior to his injury, and he will almost certainly return to that now that he is healthy. He was averaging 4.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per game through his first 17 appearances.

Omer Asik will not be on minutes limit, coach says

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/8/2014) After missing 31 games due to knee and thigh issues, Rockets center Omer Asik is expected to return Saturday against Milwaukee, and will not be on a minutes limit, head coach Kevin McHale told the Houston Chronicle.

"I'm going to play him some," McHale said. "I don't know how much. A lot will depend on his wind and his feel. We'll just watch him, but get him out some. He'll have limitations. Is it going to be two minutes, three minutes, four minutes, five minutes? I’ll just go by feel and eyesight."

Omer Asik set to return Saturday

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(2/7/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik will return to game action Saturday provided he doesn't suffer any setbacks before tip, NBA.com reports.

Asik has been out since Dec. 2 while dealing with a knee injury. He has averaged 4.4 points and 6.8 rebounds over 17 games played.

Omer Asik nearing a return to practice

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2/5/2014) Rockets center Omer Asik is continuing to recover from a knee injury, and coach Kevin McHale told reporters he expects Asik "back on the court sooner than later."

Asik has been able to take part in some 5-on-0 drills, and should be able to return to full practice in the coming days. Asik is likely to take part in full-team work either Thursday or Friday during practice, and could be cleared to play in a week or so.
