Nikola Pekovic getting closer, still unlikely for Friday

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/28/2014) Timberwolves center Nikola Pekovic took part in the team's practice Thursday on a limited basis, but still remains doubtful for Friday's game against the Lakers. Pekovic is likely to miss his seventh game in a row, with rookie Gorgui Dieng continuing to start in his place.

With Pekovic making progress, however, coach Rick Adelman is starting to look ahead toward what Pekovic's role will be upon his return. Pekovic had a minutes limit in place upon his return from his last absence due to this injury, but that might not happen this time.

"This is something that's just come up," Adelman told the Star Tribune Thursday. "I don't think you ever want to put a minutes limit on anybody, you know? He's big and he’s strong and he plays hard all the time. So he's had some issues. But hopefully he's going to learn how to get through a season, 82 games, and not have these problems"

Pekovic has had ongoing issues with his ankles over the course of his career, and has already missed 19 games this season. He is averaging 17.7 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in his 51 appearances this season.

Nikola Pekovic's ankle an issue again

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/14/2014) The Timberwolves have discussed lifting center Nikola Pekovic's minutes limit in recent days, but Friday's game against the Bobcats proved that might have been a bit overly optimistic.

Pekovic was able to play just 17 minutes before being pulled from Friday's game with soreness in his right ankle. He had the ankle iced on the bench and was unable to return, finishing with eight points on 4 of 11 shooting with four rebounds.

Pekovic has been limited to seven-minute stretches since his return from injury, and Friday is the first time we've really seen the injury affect. It is not clear how this injury will impact Pekovic's availability for Sunday's game against the Kings.

Nikola Pekovic's minutes limit close to an end

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/14/2014) Though the team hasn't considered it a hard and fast rule, Timberwolves center Nikola Pekovic has been working on a minutes limit since his return from ankle bursitis.

Though he has topped the 30-minute mark once and recorded other totals as high as 29, Pekovic is supposed to be limited to seven-minute stretches as part of his limit, though coach Rick Adelman told 1500ESPN.com Thursday he hops that restriction will be lifted in the next week.

Pekovic is averaging 16.8 points and 8.7 rebounds in 27 minutes per game since making his return March 1.

Nikola Pekovic playing with a minute limit

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/7/2014) With Nikola Pekovic only recently back from ankle bursitis that cost him 13 games, the Timberwolves' doctors are making sure he doesn't put too much stress on it. In three games since his return from the injury, he has played 28, 24 and 26 minutes, while working on a minutes limit.

"It's just tough, you know?" Pekovic told NBA.com Thursday. "But I've just got to do whatever they [the medical staff] say. I'm still going over my limit. My limit is 20."

Pekovic did say after Thursday's practice the ankle is no longer sore after putting stress on it at this point, but it does cause discomfort while he is playing. It is not yet known how long he will be limited, however he has dealt with ankle injuries in each of his NBA seasons, so they will obviously be cautious.

Pekovic has been extremely productive even on a minutes limit, averaging 17.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game since his return.
