Russell Westbrook to sit out World Cup

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(7/8/2014) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has opted not to play for Team USA during the upcoming FIBA World Cup in Spain, according to Yahoo.com.

There has been no reason given for Westbrook's unexpected absence, though he did deal with ongoing trouble with his surgically repaired knee through the season. Westbrook missed 36 games last season and spent much of the year under a minutes limit, so this could just be a chance to get him rest, after another deep playoff run.

Russell Westbrook thrashes Spurs on both sides of the ball

by Joe Polito | CBSSports.com
(5/28/2014) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has been the subject of many criticisms for his shot selection and decision making, but no one was complaining Tuesday night when he dismantled the Spurs to the tune of 40 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Wesbtrook also went a perfect 14 of 14 from the free throw line and blocked a shot, as Oklahoma City sprinted by San Antonio to knot up the Western Conference Finals at two games apiece.

Russell Westbrook's 29 points not enough in Game 1 loss

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/6/2014) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook scored a team-high 29 points on 9 of 14 shooting, but it wasn't enough to losing Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals to the Clippers by a score of 122-105.

Westbrook recorded just four assists and four rebounds while turning the ball over six times in a game where no one stepped up offensively outside the team's top three players. These two teams meet again Wednesday in Oklahoma City with the Thunder likely feeling that they cannot afford to head to Los Angeles down 2-0.

Russell Westbrooks delivers Game 7 triple-double

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(5/4/2014) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook came to play Saturday, scoring 27 points on 10 of 16 shooting while dishing out 16 assists and grabbing 10 rebounds to deliver a Game 7 triple-double in his team's 120-109 win over the Grizzlies.

Westbrook's triple-double was his second of the series, but he shot far better than he had in the previous six games, in which he made just 35.6 percent of his shots. He'll square off with either Chris Paul or Stephen Curry in the second round.

Russell Westbrook plays 33 minutes in return

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/26/2014) The Thunder let Russell Westbrook go beyond his minute limit Tuesday against the Mavericks, a good sign given his recent knee troubles.

After avoiding a serious injury following a collision with Kyle Lowry over the weekend, Westbrook was back in the lineup Tuesday. He played 31 minutes in regulation before starting the overtime period on the bench, but he came back out despite having reached his minutes limit, as the training staff displayed some flexibility with him.

Westbrook ended up scoring 23 points on 8 of 18 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers, while adding seven rebounds and eight assists. It wasn't all good, however, as he turned the ball over eight times as the Thunder went on to lose 128-119.

Westbrook is going to be held out of back to backs for the remainder of the season, and will almost certainly be fairly limited in his playing time heading into the playoffs. He has already missed 34 games this season while recovering from three separate knee surgeries, but is still averaging 21.2 points, 7.0 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Russell Westbrook back in the lineup Tuesday

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/25/2014) As expected, Thunder guard Russell Westbrook is back in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Mavericks. He sat out the first half of the team's back-to-back set Monday, after avoiding a series injury last week when he bumped knees and left a game.

Coach Scotty Brooks told NBA.com he expects Westbrook to see his usual playing time in his return.

Russell Westbrook will rest Monday, return Tuesday

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/24/2014) Thunder head coach Scott Brooks will rest point guard Russell Westbrook Monday against the Nuggets, but will return to the starting lineup Tuesday against the Mavericks, according to Royce Young of CBSSports.com.

"We practiced yesterday and he looked great," Brooks said.

Westbrook suffered a "light sprain" during Friday's game. He had MRI on his right knee Saturday, which did not reveal any major damage to his knee. He will likely continue to be limited to one half of the team's remaining back-to-back sets moving forward.

MRI confirms no serious damage for Russell Westbrook

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/22/2014) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook had an MRI taken on his right knee Saturday, the results of which confirmed that he did not suffer a major injury Friday. Despite leaving the game after bumping knees with Kyle Lowry and having to be helped off the floor, Westbrook's MRI showed "no issues of concern," according to NBA.com.

Westbrook will likely continue to be limited to one half of the team's remaining back-to-back sets, though that was the expectation even before Friday. He will be able to play his usual minutes moving forward.

Russell Westbrook says he won't miss any playing time

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(3/21/2014) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook told the Toronto Sun after Friday's double overtime win over the Raptors that he is pain-free and doesn't expect to miss any playing time moving forward.

Westbrook who has been resting his surgically-repaired knee in back-to-back games, was struck on the knee by Kyle Lowry with 7:37 left in the third quarter. He immediately called timeout and limped off the court in pain.

Westbrook has a few days to rest his knee and will likely be re-evaluated before the team's next game on Monday against the Nuggets. He came in averaging 21.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 36 games this season.

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com

Westbrook, who has been eased back into action since returning from his third knee surgery in the last year, will sit out Sunday's game against the Mavericks, The Oklahoman reports. Reggie Jackson will get the start in his place.

Westbrook is averaging 22.0 points, 7.5 assists and 4.9 rebounds in just 26.7 minutes per game in his first 10 games back from injury. The Thunder will only have two back-to-back sets of games for the remainder of the season. His next chance to play will come Monday at Chicago.

Russell Westbrook to miss some back to backs

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/15/2014) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook has played in each of the team's 10 games since his return from knee surgery, but coach Scott Brooks expects to give him time off at some point. So far, the Thunder's schedule has not featured any back-to-back sets of games, but Brooks told The Oklahoman he will likely sit Westbrook out of at least some of the team's final three sets.

Westbrook has been eased back into action, but is still playing great ball since his return. He is averaging 22.0 points, 7.5 assists and 4.9 rebounds in just 26.7 minutes per game in 10 games.

Russell Westbrook rapidly fills it up for triple-double

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(3/5/2014) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook had plenty of time to rest Tuesday against the 76ers, as he played just 20 minutes in the 125-92 win. He earned that rest with his play early in the game, as he put together his second triple-double of the season before taking much of the game half off.

Westbrook was incredibly active in his 20-plus minutes of action, helping the Thunder get out to such a huge lead. He scored 13 points on 4 of 9 shooting, snagged 10 rebounds and dished out 14 assists, while also turning the ball over six times. He also added three steals before getting some much-deserved rest in the second half.

Westbrook has been eased back into action since returning from his third knee surgery in the last year, with a minutes cap of 30 minutes. He is still averaging 18.5 points, 7.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game since his return.

Westbrook did all of his damage in 29 minutes of game action, also adding six assists, two rebounds and three steals. He has not logged more than 30 minutes since returning from injury. He is averaging 18.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists over his first four games back.

Russell Westbrook struggles with rust in return

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(2/20/2014) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook was back on the floor Thursday against the Heat, after missing nearly two months following knee surgery.

Working on a minutes limit, Westbrook played 24 minutes in the game, and appeared a bit rusty following his third surgery in a year.  He shot just 4 of 12 from the field, but was 8 of 10 from the free-throw line to finishing with 16 points. He also added five rebounds and three steals, but finished the 103-81 loss with just two assists and four turnovers.

Westbrook has been limited to just 26 games this season due to his knee issues, but is still putting up solid numbers across the board. He is averaging 21.1 points, 6.8 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game, and should be eased back into a fuller role as he moves away from the injury.

Russell Westbrook set to return on minutes limit

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/20/2014) Thunder general manager Sam Presti issued a statement announcing the return of guard Russell Westbrook Thursday night against Miami. Westbrook is expected to be on a minutes limit.

"As Russell integrates back into the team we are going to manage the transition by building his minutes over time and will evaluate his availability in back-to-back situations," Presti said. "These steps are an effort to control the areas of his return to play where feasible, given the reduced practice and conditioning time during the regular season."

Westbrook was limited to just 25 games this season and was been sidelined since Dec. 25 after having another surgery to his right knee. He averaged 21.3 points, 7.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds over that span.

Kevin Durant suggested that Wesbtrook would be back Thursday against Miami -- his first game since Dec. 25 against New York. This will be Westbrook's second return this season from injury, as he missed Oklahoma City's first two games of the year.

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Westbrook was given a seven-week timetable for recovery after undergoing surgery on his injured knee in late December. He has averaged 21.3 points, 7.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds over 25 games played.

Russell Westbrook out until All-Star break after surgery

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(12/27/2013) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook underwent another surgery on his right knee Friday, his third in the last nine months since suffering a torn meniscus in last year's playoffs.

According to a press release from team general manager Sam Presti, Westbrook is likely to miss at least seven weeks, with an officially timetable placing him out until after the All-Star break. Westbrook recently began feeling swelling in the knee in recent days, but had been playing through it without pain.

"On the most recent MRI it was determined by the surgeon that there was an area of concern that had not previously existed, nor was detectable in the previous procedures, and it was necessary to evaluate Russell further," Presti said. "The consulting physician determined that arthroscopic surgery was necessary to address the swelling that was taking place."

Westbrook missed the first two games of the season as a result of his last surgery, the second undergone as a result of the injury. Westbrook was averaging 21.3 points, 7.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game prior to the injury, and will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Reggie Jackson.
