Thunder's Durant, Westbrook offer support for Scott Brooks

(4/16/2015) With the Thunder reportedly contemplating whether to bring back coach Scott Brooks next season, forward Kevin Durant said Brooks does not deserve blame for the team missing the playoffs for the first since 2008-09, reports The Oklahoman.

"He rallied us, made sure we were all emotionally stable," Durant said.

Guard Russell Westbrook agreed with Durant that Brooks did the best job possible.

"As a coach and as a friend, I think he does a great job," Westbrook said.

Durant added that he was disappointed he wasn't able to finish the season to help the team due to his foot injury.

"I'm definitely pissed," he said. "I can't wait for the first game [next season]."


Thunder's Russell Westbrook takes home scoring title

(4/16/2015) Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook scored 37 points on 11 of 20 shooting in his team's 138-113 win over the Timberwolves Wednesday and finished with a scoring average of 28.1 points per game to take home the scoring title.

Westbrook had an outstanding statistical season across the board, averaging 28.1 points, 8.6 assists, 7.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals. However, the Thunder have missed out on a playoff spot after finishing 45-37 but losing a tiebreaker to the Pelicans, who managed to defeat the Spurs Wednesday.

Westbrook grabbed 11 rebounds and added seven assists in the win.

NBA rescinds Thunder G Russell Westbrook's 16th technical

(4/13/2015) In a move with major playoff implications, the NBA announced Monday that they have rescinded the technical foul Russell Westbrook received Sunday against the Pacers, which would have been the guard's 16 of the season, leading to an automatic one-game suspension. 

The change leaves Westbrook eligible for tonight's must-win game against the Trail Blazers. The Thunder are tied with the Pelicans for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference with two games remaining, but New Orleans holds the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Pelicans play the Timberwolves Monday.

Westbrook is averaging 27.9 points, 8.6 assists and 7.2 rebounds for the Thunder.

Westbrook put up 43 shots (hitting 21) and went five of 15 from 3-point range.

It's just the 11th time since 1985 that a player took 43-plus attempts (per BasketballReference.com)

Westbrook also added nine rebounds and eight assists in the loss.


Thunder's Russell Westbrook could be suspended one game for techs

(4/12/2015) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook was hit with his 16th technical foul of the season Sunday in Indiana and, as a result, could be suspended for Monday's contest against the Blazers, per The Oklahoman.

NBA rules require a player to sit out one game after a 16th technical, but Thunder coach Scott Brooks believes the call will be overturned.

"I'm pretty confident this one will be rescinded," Brooks said. "That's not my decision, but I feel confident about it."

The Thunder will enter the final week of the regular season tied with the Pelicans for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Westbrook scored a career-high 54 points in the Thunder loss on Sunday.

Westbrook shot 12 of 29 from the field, including 4 of 11 from 3-point range. He also added 11 rebounds and 13 assists to record a triple-double. Westbrook has recorded a triple-double in two of his last three games and has 11 this season.

The 40-point game was the eighth time this season Westbrook has scored 40 or more points in a game.

It was the 10th triple-double of the season for Westbrook, who also turned the ball over six times Wednesday while recording one steal and making just two of his 11 attempts from 3-point range. He'll match up with the Grizzlies Friday.

Westbrook had one of his rebounds taken away, leaving him with nine instead of 10. Therefore his final stat line was 12 points, 17 assists and nine rebounds. Westbrook has totaled nine triple doubles this season.

Westbrook shot just 5 of 16 from the field, but finished with 12 points, 17 assists, 10 rebounds, two blocks and four steals. It was his second straight double-double.

"It was a balanced attack on both ends of the floor," coach Scott Brooks said, per the team. "Everybody rebounded, everybody defended."

(3/20/2015) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook got back to his triple-double ways in Oklahoma City's 123-115 win over the Hawks on Friday. 

Westbrook scored 36 points, dished out 14 assists and brought down 10 rebounds in the game. It's the seventh time in his past 12 games that he's recorded a triple-double and the first time he's done so in three outings. 

Seventeen of Westbrook's 36 came in the fourth quarter. It's the 17th triple-double of Westbrook's career. 

Westbrook made eight of his 24 attempts from the field and sank all 17 of his free-throw attempts.

While scoring 40 points can't be labeled a disappointment, Westbrook "only" racked up eight rebounds and seven assists, bringing his streak of four straight triple-doubles to an end. He also kicked in two steals while turning the ball over five times in 38 minutes of action.

"He's not happy that he scored a bunch of points and got a bunch of rebounds and assists and we lost the game," coach Scott Brooks said after the game, per the Associated Press. "Russell is about winning and about winning only."

Westbrook has delivered three straight performances with at least 40 points heading into Sunday's matchup with the Raptors.


Russell Westbrook first since Jordan with four straight triple-doubles

(3/4/2015) Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook became the first player since Michael Jordan in 1989 to deliver four straight triple-doubles, scoring a career-high 49 points, grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds and dishing out 10 assists in his team's 123-118 overtime win over the 76ers Wednesday.

"It's definitely a blessing, but more importantly, I think it's important that we're winning," Westbrook said after the game, per the Associated Press.

Westbrook missed his team's previous game after undergoing facial surgery and came back even stronger Wednesday, going 16 for 33 from the field and 16 for 20 from the free-throw line en route to arguably the best performance of his career, all while wearing a protective mask.

"It was OK," Westbrook said of the mask. "It was weird. Had to keep wiping it. It was a total big process of trying to keep everything from fogging up. That's not going to stop me. My job is to come out and trying to lead my team."

Westbrook also chipped in three steals and one block in 42 minutes of action Wednesday. He's delivered five 40-point performances in his last 13 games. The Thunder move on to face the Bulls Thursday.

Westbrook took a knee to the face Friday and underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his cheekbone. He missed one game while recovering and is set to wear a protective mask in Wednesday's game. Westbrook has averaged 26.5 points, 8.1 assists and 6.8 rebounds in 48 games.

The Thunder are 15-point favorites at home against the 76ers Wednesday.

Westbrook was involved in a scary collision on Friday, where he took a knee to the face that left a dent on his head. He underwent surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone on Saturday, and after missing Sunday's game against the Lakers, the star point guard is set to return with a mask to protect the injury.

With Kevin Durant sidelined, Westbrook is enjoying his best numbers in the NBA and is making a late case for the MVP award. In February, he averaged 31.2 points, 9.1 rebounds and 10.3 assists, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average that level of production for a month. Through 45 games, Westbrook is averaging a career best in points (26.5), assists (8.1) and rebounds (6.8) this season.

Oklahoma City is a 15-point home favorite against Philadelphia, per VegasInsider.com.


Report: Thunder's Russell Westbrook will likely return Wednesday

(3/3/2015) After undergoing facial surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone which caused him to miss Sunday's contest, Thunder guard Russell Westbrook will likely return to the court for Wednesday's game against the 76ers, sources told Yahoo Sports.

The final decision will be made Wednesday, but Westbrook is expected to play as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks. He will wear a protective mask upon his return.

(2/28/2015) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook had surgery after getting kneed in the head, late in Friday night's game, the team announced. 

The surgical procedure corrected a fracture to the zygomatic arch bone in Westbrook's cheek. 

He will be out for the Thunder's game at the Lakers on Sunday. He'll be reevaluated later in the week. 

Westbrook is averaging 26.5 points, 8.1 assists and 6.8 rebounds this season. In February, he averaged 31.2 points, 9.1 rebounds and 10.3 assists, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average that level of production for a month.
