Russell Westbrook's 27 points, 11 assists put Thunder past Lakers


(3/24/2015) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook scored 27 points, on 9 of 17 shooting, and collected a game-high 11 assists Tuesday to lead the Thunder past the Lakers 127-117.

The game was Westbrook's NBA-best 15th of the season with at least 25 points and 10 assists.

(3/23/2015) Upon further review by the NBA, Thunder guard Russell Westbrook did not record a triple-double on Sunday against the Heat, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Westbrook had one of his rebounds taken away, leaving him with nine instead of 10. Therefore his final stat line was 12 points, 17 assists and nine rebounds. Westbrook has totaled nine triple doubles this season. 

The Thunder won the game 93-75.

(3/22/2015) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook continued his case for MVP when he recorded his 10th triple-double of the season during the 93-75 victory over the Heat on Sunday.

Westbrook shot just 5 of 16 from the field, but finished with 12 points, 17 assists, 10 rebounds, two blocks and four steals. It was his second straight double-double.

"It was a balanced attack on both ends of the floor," coach Scott Brooks said, per the team. "Everybody rebounded, everybody defended."

(3/20/2015) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook got back to his triple-double ways in Oklahoma City's 123-115 win over the Hawks on Friday. 

Westbrook scored 36 points, dished out 14 assists and brought down 10 rebounds in the game. It's the seventh time in his past 12 games that he's recorded a triple-double and the first time he's done so in three outings. 

Seventeen of Westbrook's 36 came in the fourth quarter. It's the 17th triple-double of Westbrook's career. 

Westbrook made eight of his 24 attempts from the field and sank all 17 of his free-throw attempts.

Westbrook shot 12 of 27 from the field, including 2 of 6 from 3-point range. He was also 10 of 13 from the free-throw line and added 11 rebounds, six assists and one steal. Westbrook has scored 30 or more points in six of his last eight games.

Westbrook also dished out a game-high 12 assists and grabbed 10 rebounds in the contest, leading to his sixth triple-double in his last eight games. Despite adding eight turnovers, Westbrook continued his torrid pace. He is averaging 35.0 points per game in his last five contests.

(3/8/2015) Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook scored 30 points on 9 of 21 shooting from the field and 11 of 13 from the free throw line, in Oklahoma City's 108-104 win over the Raptors Sunday.

Westbrook also dished out a game-high 17 assists and grabbed 11 rebounds, leading to his fifth triple-double in his last six games. The only game Westbrook did not record a triple-double, he scored 43 points with eight rebounds and seven assists. 

He added four steals to his totals.

(3/5/2015) Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook scored a team-high 43 points on 14 of 32 shooting, including 3 of 5 shooting from behind the arc, in his team's 108-105 loss to the Bulls Thursday.

While scoring 40 points can't be labeled a disappointment, Westbrook "only" racked up eight rebounds and seven assists, bringing his streak of four straight triple-doubles to an end. He also kicked in two steals while turning the ball over five times in 38 minutes of action.

"He's not happy that he scored a bunch of points and got a bunch of rebounds and assists and we lost the game," coach Scott Brooks said after the game, per the Associated Press. "Russell is about winning and about winning only."

Westbrook has delivered three straight performances with at least 40 points heading into Sunday's matchup with the Raptors.


Russell Westbrook first since Jordan with four straight triple-doubles

(3/4/2015) Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook became the first player since Michael Jordan in 1989 to deliver four straight triple-doubles, scoring a career-high 49 points, grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds and dishing out 10 assists in his team's 123-118 overtime win over the 76ers Wednesday.

"It's definitely a blessing, but more importantly, I think it's important that we're winning," Westbrook said after the game, per the Associated Press.

Westbrook missed his team's previous game after undergoing facial surgery and came back even stronger Wednesday, going 16 for 33 from the field and 16 for 20 from the free-throw line en route to arguably the best performance of his career, all while wearing a protective mask.

"It was OK," Westbrook said of the mask. "It was weird. Had to keep wiping it. It was a total big process of trying to keep everything from fogging up. That's not going to stop me. My job is to come out and trying to lead my team."

Westbrook also chipped in three steals and one block in 42 minutes of action Wednesday. He's delivered five 40-point performances in his last 13 games. The Thunder move on to face the Bulls Thursday.

(3/4/2015) Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook will not be under a minutes restriction Wednesday against the 76ers, The Oklahoman reports.

Westbrook took a knee to the face Friday and underwent surgery to repair a fracture in his cheekbone. He missed one game while recovering and is set to wear a protective mask in Wednesday's game. Westbrook has averaged 26.5 points, 8.1 assists and 6.8 rebounds in 48 games.

The Thunder are 15-point favorites at home against the 76ers Wednesday.

(3/4/2015) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook confirmed to reporters that he will indeed return to the floor Wednesday night against the 76ers, per the Oklahoman.

Westbrook was involved in a scary collision on Friday, where he took a knee to the face that left a dent on his head. He underwent surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone on Saturday, and after missing Sunday's game against the Lakers, the star point guard is set to return with a mask to protect the injury.

With Kevin Durant sidelined, Westbrook is enjoying his best numbers in the NBA and is making a late case for the MVP award. In February, he averaged 31.2 points, 9.1 rebounds and 10.3 assists, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average that level of production for a month. Through 45 games, Westbrook is averaging a career best in points (26.5), assists (8.1) and rebounds (6.8) this season.

Oklahoma City is a 15-point home favorite against Philadelphia, per VegasInsider.com.


Report: Thunder's Russell Westbrook will likely return Wednesday

(3/3/2015) After undergoing facial surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone which caused him to miss Sunday's contest, Thunder guard Russell Westbrook will likely return to the court for Wednesday's game against the 76ers, sources told Yahoo Sports.

The final decision will be made Wednesday, but Westbrook is expected to play as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks. He will wear a protective mask upon his return.

(2/28/2015) Thunder guard Russell Westbrook had surgery after getting kneed in the head, late in Friday night's game, the team announced. 

The surgical procedure corrected a fracture to the zygomatic arch bone in Westbrook's cheek. 

He will be out for the Thunder's game at the Lakers on Sunday. He'll be reevaluated later in the week. 

Westbrook is averaging 26.5 points, 8.1 assists and 6.8 rebounds this season. In February, he averaged 31.2 points, 9.1 rebounds and 10.3 assists, becoming the first player since Oscar Robertson to average that level of production for a month.

(2/28/2015) Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook will be evaluated Friday night after taking a blow to the head in his team's 115-112 loss to the Blazers, The Oklahoman reports.

Westbrook was kneed in the head late in the fourth quarter of Friday's game but remained in, eventually heading to the free-throw line to shoot three free throws with his team down three. He missed the first and made the last two, finishing the game with 40 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in his third straight triple-double.

The Thunder are scheduled to face the Lakers Sunday.

(2/28/2015) Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook recorded his third straight triple-double Friday, scoring a team-high 40 points on 14 of 32 shooting while racking up 13 rebounds and 11 assists in his team's 115-112 loss to the Blazers.

Westbrook has averaged a remarkable 33.0 points, 12.7 rebounds and 10.7 assists in the last three games, and he's posted double-digit assists in six straight. His 40 points Friday gives him four games with at least 40 points in February. However, despite his recent string of triple-doubles, the Thunder have lost two straight games. They'll look to get back on track Sunday against the Lakers.

Westbrook shot 12-38 from the field. He went just 1-10 from beyond the arc, though. Westbrook was able to make up for that by hitting 14 of his 16 free throw attempts. He finished with a team-high 39 points. Westbrook didn't do all the scoring himself. He made sure to involve his teammates, dishing out 11 assists. He also pulled down 11 rebounds, picking up his fourth triple-double this season.

Westbrook appeared to tweak his ankle late in overtime, but it did not appear to be serious.

"Everybody's playing with a great amount of confidence," Westbrook said after the game, per the Associated Press. "We're playing together, making the extra pass, and guys are getting open shots, so it makes it easy on everybody. I'm just happy to see everybody doing well."

Westbrook's triple-double was his third of the season and comes on a night where he played just 28 minutes in his team's win. He also kicked in one steal while delivering double-digit assists for his fourth straight game.

"He just continues to stack games up on top of one another," coach Scott Brooks said. "He's played well. He's doing a great job of leading us, leading the new guys and leading the group. Making it all come together."

The Thunder bring an eight-game winning streak into Thursday's matchup with the Suns.

Westbrook made 12 of 27 shots in 35 minutes. He made all nine free throw attempts. Forward Serge Ibaka scored 16 and guard D.J. Augustin contributed 12.

Westbrook also had 10 assists and seven rebounds.

"Russell's been a leader for many, many years and he's done a great job of doing that," coach Scott Brooks said. "He understands the situation and he understands that we have a lot of new guys. His communicating on the court, at halftime, during timeouts, was great. He's a leader and guys listen to him."

''Just trying to find my spots, just trying to find a way to be aggressive at all times, in attack mode,'' Westbrook said after the game, per the Associated Press. ''Keep putting pressure on the defense. That's my job.''

Westbrook took on the scoring role with Kevin Durant still dealing with foot soreness, and the dynamic point guard paired with Serge Ibaka (21 points, 22 rebounds) to put together an impressive win in a game that saw Oklahoma City up 16 by halftime. Westbrook also recorded five rebounds and two steals while making all 14 of his free-throw attempts.

The Thunder are set to face the Hornets Saturday.

It was Westbrook's first MVP award in the game. He scored a record 27 points in the first half and came up just one point shy of Wilt Chamberlain's All-Star Game record of 42 points in the game. He added five rebounds and three steals to his totals.

(2/6/2015) Thunder G Russell Westbrook had huge night, but it wasn't quite enough. Westbrook put up a career-high 48 points and dished out 11 assists, but Anthony Davis' buzzer beating 3-pointer gave the Pelicans the 116-113 win. 

Westbrook hit 15 of 28 shots and all 15 of his free throws, the last one tying the game with 1.2 seconds left, setting the stage for Davis' heroics. 

Westbrook added nine rebounds, falling one board shy of a triple-double. 

The Thunder host the Clippers, Sunday.

(2/4/2015) Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook matched his career-high scoring performance Wednesday, racking up a season-high 45 points on 18 for 31 shooting, including 2 of 6 shooting from behind the arc, in his team's 102-91 win over the Pelicans.

With Kevin Durant sidelined, Westbrook shouldered the offensive load Wednesday, matching his 45-point performance from March 2012 to tie the best scoring night of his career.

"Russell is as competitive as any player I have been around," coach Scott Brooks said after the game, per the Associated Press. "He obviously has the talent and the skill base, but his heart and his desire to win, and to win every possession, is what makes him great."

Westbrook also tallied six rebounds, six assists, one block and one steal in 40 minutes in his third 40-point game of the season. The Thunder will look for two straight against the Pelicans Friday.

Westbrook shot 8-15 from the field, including 1-3 from beyond the arc. He sunk all eight of his free throws, finishing with a team-high 25 points. Westbrook made sure to involve his teammates as well, dishing out 14 assists. He was also active on the boards, pulling down 11 rebounds. Ten of those rebounds came on the defensive side of the court. Westbrook also added four steals and one block during the contest. 


NBA All-Star reserves selected

(1/29/2015) The reserves for both the Eastern Conference and Western Conference All-Star squads were announced Thursday.

In the East, Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving, Bulls guard Jimmy Butler, Heat guard Dwyane Wade, Hawks guard Jeff Teague, Hawks forward Paul Millsap, Heat forward Chris Bosh and Hawks center Al Horford were selected to the All-Star team.

In the West, Rockets guard James Harden, Warriors guard Klay Thompson, Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, Clippers guard Chris Paul, Thunder forward Kevin Durant, Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge and Spurs forward Tim Duncan were named All-Star reserves.

The 2015 NBA All-Star Game will be played in New York City's Madison Square Garden on Feb. 15.
