Ricky Rubio dealing with damaged muscles, ligaments from ankle to toe

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1/22/2015) Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders told reporters prior to Wednesday's loss to Dallas that Ricky Rubio's injury is far worse than a high ankle sprain. Rubio, who has been out of game action since Nov. 7, is also dealing with damaged muscles and ligaments that lead from his ankle to his toes, which has prolonged the recovery process, per USA Today.

"It's not him not wanting to play or not working," Saunders said.. "He's doing everything he can. We as an organization and the doctors who are involved have been the ones who have tried to hold him back."

After visiting two specialists recently, Rubio was cautioned that an early return could cause a stress fracture in his leg. Rubio took some contact during drills on Tuesday. It was the first time he participated in contact drills since the injury. However, he remains without a timetable for return.

"It's a very unique ankle sprain," Saunders said. "They said at the time it's going to be worse than a high ankle sprain, and everyone knows those go eight to 12 weeks. So it has nothing to do with him not wanting to play."
