Wolves' Saunders hopes to get Ricky Rubio on court by Christmas

(12/16/2014) Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders is hoping point guard Ricky Rubio will be able to return to the court for 5-on-0 work by Christmas, which could speed up his timetable to return, Saunders said Tuesday. 

Rubio, who is averaging 9.4 points and 10.0 assists per game, has been out since Nov. 7 after suffering a high ankle sprain.

(12/15/2014) Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio will travel with the team on their upcoming road trip to Washington and Boston, but will still not play, the team announced Monday. 

Rubio has been out since Nov. 7 when he injured his ankle and has not yet been able to participate in practice. 

In five games this year, Rubio is averaging 9.4 points and 10.0 assists per game.

Rubio has progressed to doing some work on an anti-gravity treadmill. The exercise allows Rubio to workout without putting weight on his legs. Rubio is not expected back until January due to a severely sprained ankle.

(12/4/2014) Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders confirmed Thursday that point guard Ricky Rubio won't return until January, reports 5 Eyewitness News. Rubio is trying to come back from a severely sprained ankle he suffered Nov. 7. He's off crutches and no longer using a walking boot.

Rubio had expressed optimism he'd return around Christmas, but that no longer seems realistic.

The more immediate issues revolve around center Nikola Pekovic, who is dealing with wrist and foot injuries. Fellow center Ronny Turiaf has also been ruled out with a hip issue. Guard Mo Williams could also be sidelined with an illness.

The team announced that Rubio is out indefinitely with the injury but gave no further indication on the anticipated timetable. Reports have ranged from two weeks for a re-evaluation to three-to-four weeks for recovery to now up to two months, according to the new report. What's clear is that the Timberwolves will be without the point guard for the foreseeable future.

Rubio will be out indefinitely with the injury, and it's likely the team won't have a better idea on his timetable for another two weeks at least, according to the Star Tribune. Though the injury is significant, Rubio has avoided a fracture and a high ankle sprain, two injuries that would have likely kept him sidelined much longer.

(11/5/2014) Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio scored 14 points on 6 of 11 shooting and dished out 12 assists in 34 minutes in his team's 98-91 win over the Nets Wednesday.

Rubio racked up 17 assists in his last game but couldn't reach double digits in points, so Wednesday's performance marks his first double-double of the season. He also racked up a season high eight rebounds and two steals in the win. Rubio is set to face the Magic Friday.

Rubio handed 17 assists, matching a franchise record and his personal best before fouling out late in the game. He finished with only six points on 3 of 10 shooting from the field, with two assists in 32 minutes of game action. Through three games, Rubio has averaged 9.7 points, 10.7 assists and 5.7 rebounds.

(10/31/2014) Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio has signed a four-year, $56 million contract extension Friday, according to Yahoo!

Rubio had until midnight to agree on a contract. The 24-year-old averaged 9.5 points per game and 8.6 assists per game last season. Rubio would have become a restricted free-agent at the end of the year if he didn't agree on a deal with Minnesota.

(10/31/2014) The opportunity still exists for Ricky Rubio to sign an extension with the Timberwolves before the midnight deadline on Friday, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports. Wojnarowski notes that an agreement may come down to the wire.

The Timberwolves are willing to offer a four-year extension, worth approximately between $52-$54 million, according to 1500 AM ESPN Radio in Minneapolis. If both sides can't reach an agreement, Rubio will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Report: Timberwolves far apart on Ricky Rubio extension talks

(10/6/2014) With an Oct. 31 deadline to sign fourth-year players to extensions, the Timberwolves have been in negotiations with guard Ricky Rubio. According to the Sporting News, however, the two sides appear to be far apart.

Rubio and agent Dan Fagen have reportedly been seeking a max extension, but Monday's report indicates the Wolves' best offer so far has been in the range of four years, $48 million. The max Rubio can get is something in the neighborhood of $85 million over five years.

Rubio played in a career-high 82 games last season, averaging 9.5 points and 8.6 assists per game, while still struggling with his shot. He connected on 38.1 percent of his attempts from the field and 33.1 percent from 3-point range, while adding 2.3 steals on the defensive side of the court.
