Matthews sits out finale

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews missed his fifth game in a row Wednesday against the Warriors, as his season came to an end. Matthews was unable to play due to an ankle injury that has lingered for weeks. Matthews hadn't missed a game in each of his first three years in the league, but Wednesday marked the 13th contest he was forced to sit out of this year.
Analysis: The 26-year-old turned in a fairly productive 2012-13 campaign as he was able to increase his scoring output by more than a point from last year (14.8 ppg). He also averaged a career-best 2.4 made treys per game while once again starting each of the 69 games he appeared in. However, this could be as good as gets for Matthews, who still doesn't bring much to the table outside of his mid-teen scoring and decent 3-point shooting. Fantasy owners should plan on targeting Matthews in the later rounds in most draft formats next fall.

No Matthews for Blazers

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews was ruled out for Tuesday's contest against the Clippers as he continues to nurse an ankle injury. Matthews, who has now missed four straight games with his injury, will be re-evaluated prior to Wednesday's season finale against the Warriors in the hopes of returning to the court, reports CSNNW.com.

Matthews remains sidelined

News: As expected, Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews was ruled out for Sunday's contest against the Nuggets as he continues to nurse an ankle injury. Matthews, who has been spotted in a walking boot, has now missed three straight games with his injuries.
Analysis: There is really no reason for Matthews to rush back on the court at this point, but the team continues to list him as day to day. The normally durable 26-year-old has now missed 11 games on the season after never missing a game in each of his first three seasons in the league. While Matthews once again proved to be a decent source for points, he didn't offer much in the rebounding, assist or steals departments. However, that is nothing new for Matthews, who will be worthy of a late-round pick in most formats next fall, assuming he is healthy.

Matthews out again Friday

News: According to a report from CSSNW.com, Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews is out for Friday's game against the Thunder. Matthews was spotted in a walking boot Wednesday and has now missed two games due to the injury. He remains day to day.
Analysis: Matthews' ankle has no structural damage, but it is clear that the team has no desire to push him down the stretch. The Blazers have three games remaining after Friday's this season, and it will be interesting to see whether the team opts to play him. Matthews has fought through ankle issues through the second half of the season, so they would have ample justification to shut him down. When healthy, Matthews is a solid Fantasy option, averaging 15.0 points per game on the season. He is a risky play down the stretch due to this injury.

Matthews still in a boot

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews was unable to play Wednesday against the Lakers, due to an ankle injury suffered Sunday. Matthews is still in a boot, and it is not clear whether he will be able to return to the floor with just four games remaining on the schedule.
Analysis: X-rays came back negative, but there is little reason for the Blazers to risk further injury this late in the season. Matthews has fought through ankle issues through the second half of the season, so they have ample justification to shut him down. When healthy, Matthews is a solid Fantasy option, averaging 15.0 points per game on the season. He is a risky play down the stretch due to this injury.

Matthews leaves with ankle injury

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews was forced to leave Sunday's contest against the Mavericks. Matthews landed awkwardly on his right ankle in the first quarter of the 96-91 win and was immediately removed the game. He was unable to return to the contest and was seen wearing a walking boot after the defeat. "My (stuff) is messed up," Matthews said after the game. "Never felt this before."
Analysis: X-rays taken on Matthews' ankle came back negative, but this looks to be a fairly significant injury. Portland only has five game left on its schedule, so it is possible Matthews has played his last game in the 2012-13 season. The 26-year-old was averaging 15 points on the year entering Sunday's tilt while also giving owners 2.5 made treys per game on 39 percent shooting from behind the arc. Matthews can be considered a viable source for mid-teens scoring and 3-pointers, making him a viable start in most formats when healthy.

Wesley Matthews

Matthews stays hot from deep

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews continues to fill it up from 3-point line. Matthews, who is shooting a career-best 41 percent from behind the arc this season, hit four more 3s during Portland's loss to the Jazz last Monday night. He has now made a combined 22 treys over his last eight games and is shooting 53 percent from behind the arc over that span.
Analysis: Matthews has also been a decent 3-point shooter, but he has been absolutely lighting it up of late. He is giving owners 3.3 made treys during his eight-game run as he finally seems to be healthy after being limited by ankle and elbow injuries over the past few weeks. While Matthews doesn't offer much outside of mid-teen scoring and 3-pointers, owners should take advantage of his recent stretch and get him active over the final few scoring periods of the year.

Matthews heats up from deep

News: Trailm Blazers guard Wesley Matthews connected on a career-high seven 3-pointers during Tuesday's contest against the Bucks. Matthews went 7 of 11 from downtown in the 102-95 defeat to finish with 28 points. He also added three assists, two rebounds and two assists to his stat line, while logging 43 minutes of game action.
Analysis: Matthews' production has been all over the place of late as he has been dealing with ankle issues over the past few weeks. However, he remains a serious threat from downtown as evidenced by his 39.5 percent shooting from behind the arc on the year. Matthews also gives owners mid-teens scoring most nights, making him a worthy mid-range option in most formats.

Matthews back on track

News: Portland guard Wesley Matthews struggled over the previous two contests but was able to get back on track Saturday against Detroit. He scored 17 points and hauled in three rebounds in the 112-101 win. He went 4 for 10 from the floor, including 2 for 5 from downtown, and made all seven of his free throws. Matthews, who played 38 minutes, also posted two assists and a steal in the victory.
Analysis: Matthews entered Saturday averaging 14.4 points in the previous five games so it was nice to see him get back on track against the Pistons. He has had a resurgent campaign after a down 2011 season but continues to contribute minimally in secondary categories. Since Matthews can score in the mid-teens on a consistent basis, however, keep the 26-year-old active in deeper Fantasy formats.

Matthews holding steady

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews had another solid game Friday against the Spurs, as he scored 15 points on 5 of 9 shooting in a 136-106 win. Matthews got hot from three-point range in the game, with all five of his makes coming from long range on seven attempts. He added four rebounds, one assist and two steals, while missing a pair of free-throw attempts.
Analysis: Mathews has been shooting the ball well recently, but his shot attempts are going down. He is 44.9 percent from the field over the last five games with 3.0 three-pointers made per game, but his scoring is down to 13.0 because his role has been reduced. Matthews has been struggling with an ankle injury for a while, an issue which may still be bothering him. Still, he is playing through whatever lingering pain might be there, so Fantasy owners should continue to consider him a solid starting option in most formats.

Matthews plays on ankle

News: Portland guard Wesley Matthews, who was dealing with an ankle injury and missed some practice time, started against the Nuggets Wednesday. Matthews shot poorly but hit a couple late 3-pointers as he scored 16 points with two assists. Matthews went 4 of 12 and 11 of those shot attempts and all of the makes came from beyond the arc. He saw 32 minutes and grabbed one rebound.
Analysis: Matthews didn't miss a beat despite dealing with an ankle issue. He's had solid games in three straight contests and continues to produce for the Blazers and Fantasy owners. A solid scorer and excellent 3-point shooter, Matthews can be active in the majority of Fantasy leagues.

Matthews sits out practice

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews was unable to practice Tuesday due to an ankle injury. He told the Columbian that he remains optimistic he'll play Wednesday night against the Nuggets.
Analysis: Matthews has been recovering from an ankle injury since the start of February, so the Trail Blazers may be taking a cautious approach with the 26-year-old, especially in practice. We'll have to keep tabs on his status leading up to Wednesday's contest against the Nuggets. He is averaging 14.8 points and 2.7 assists per game on the season and should be viewed as a solid Fantasy option in most formats, when healthy.

No issues for Matthews

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews got back on the floor Friday against the Lakers, after missing the team’s previous game with an ankle and elbow injury. Matthews showed no ill effects from the injuries, as he scored 15 points on 5 of 10 shooting while playing 36 minutes. Matthews added four three-pointers and a team-high eight assists, while spending much of he game defending Kobe Bryant, who scored 40 points. The Trail Blazers would fall short, 111-107.
Analysis: If Matthews was feeling any after affects from the injury, he certainly did not let it affect his effort in the game. Matthews has dealt with nagging injuries for the first time in his career this season, but he continues to play well when healthy. He is averaging 14.8 points and 2.7 assists per game on the season, the latter being a career high. As long as Matthews does not suffer a setback with the injury, he can be considered a solid Fantasy option in most formats.

Matthews does work Thursday

News: The Trail Blazers official team website reports Thursday that guard Wesley Mathews was taking shots during practice and making light cuts and lateral movements. Mathews missed Tuesday's game against Phoenix with ankle and elbow injuries. He won't attempt to return until at least Friday morning's shootaround prior to a game in Los Angeles against the Lakers.
Analysis: Matthews might be able to play against the Lakers if he was able to do some work Thursday. Keep an eye on his status Friday morning, and hopefully he can play against the Lakers. When healthy and active, Matthews is a quality Fantasy option in all leagues.

Matthews inactive against Suns

News: Portland guard Wesley Matthews missed Tuesday's second-half opener against Phoenix as he is dealing with an ankle injury. Matthews couldn't practice Monday and is considered day to day. Matthews suffered a high ankle sprain to his left ankle during Portland's loss to the Hornets last Wednesday.
Analysis: Matthews was hoping that the All-Star break would be enough to allow him to get back in action but he apparently needs a few more days. He's considered day to day for now but was a very risky start for Week 17 (Feb. 18-24). Matthews can be considered a viable start in most formats when healthy.

Matthews' status up in the air

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews (ankle) was held out of practice Monday and is being considered a game-time decision for Tuesday's contest against the Suns, reports the Oregonian. Matthews suffered a high ankle sprain to his left ankle during Portland's loss to the Hornets last Wednesday and he remains listed as day to day.
Analysis: We were hoping that a few days off would allow Matthews' ankle to heal up a bit, but his status for Tuesday's tilt remains very much in question. Fantasy owners will have to keep an eye on his status leading up to when lineups lock to see if he will be available to play. Portland is scheduled to play three times in the upcoming scoring period, so Matthews could still end up playing twice even if he misses a game. Matthews can be considered a viable start in most formats when healthy.

Matthews suffers ankle sprain

News: Portland guard Wesley Matthews suffered a high ankle sprain to his left ankle on Wednesday early in the game at New Orleans. Matthews, who said he heard a pop when he landed, had to be helped to the locker room after playing just two minutes after taking an awkward fall in the first quarter. Matthews had one rebound and one assist before getting hurt and did not take a shot. X-rays were negative and he expects to play following the All-Star break. “I was planning on working out as soon as I landed,’’ Matthews told The Oregonian. “But I’m not going to do anything stupid. It’s better for me, if I need to take all four days, to take all four days and come back pain free rather than anything less than that.’’
Analysis: Matthews had scored 20 points his last time out against Miami but was hurt just moments into Wednesday's game. The injury appeared to be somewhat serious and Fantasy owners have to hold their breath, though he won't have to play again until after the All-Star break so he has some time to heal. When healthy, Matthews has become a viable Fantasy option in all leagues and formats.

Matthews stays productive

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews turned in another solid performance during Tuesday's contest against the Heat. Matthews went 8 of 13 shooting from the field, including 3 of 6 from downtown, and 1 of 1 from the free throw line. He finished with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists while logging 37 minutes of game action in a 117-104 defeat.
Analysis: After being held to just two points Friday night, Matthews has bounced back with a pair of solid performances. He has averaged 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists over his last two games while shooting 56.0 percent from the field over that span. The 26-year-old has enjoyed a resurgent campaign and is a nightly threat to score in the mid-teens. Consider him a solid option in the majority of Fantasy formats moving forward.

Matthews bounces back

News: Portland guard Wesley Matthews turned in a decent shooting performance during Sunday's contest at Orlando. Matthews went 6 of 12 shooting from the field, including 4 of 9 from downtown, and 1 of 2 from the free throw line. He finished with 17 points and five rebounds in a 110-104 defeat. He also chipped in with three assists and a steal while logging 36 minutes of game action.
Analysis: Matthews has scored in double figures in three of the last four games as he bounced back from a 2-point performance his last time out. He is averaging 15.5 points and 3.8 assists and 2.5 rebounds over his last three games while shooting 43.8 percent from the field over that span. He has had a resurgent campaign overall and is usually good for some mid-teens scoring on a nightly basis. Fantasy owners should view him as a solid option in the majority of formats heading into Week 16 (Feb. 11-17).

Matthews doesn't miss much

News: After missing the previous contest due to an ankle injury, Portland guard Wesley Matthews had his best scoring performance since Jan. 7 on Monday night against Minnesota. He scored 22 points and dished out five assists in the 100-98 win. He went 7 for 11 from the floor, including 4 for 8 from downtown, and made all four of his free throws. Matthews also posted three rebounds and a block while playing 39 minutes in the victory.
Analysis: Matthews entered Monday shooting just 37 percent over the last five games so it was good to see him get back on track. He has had a resurgent campaign overall and is usually good for some mid-teens scoring on a nightly basis. Since this ankle issue appears to be behind him, consider getting Matthews active in most Fantasy formats again.

Matthews boosted by recovery

News: Portland guard Wesley Matthews (ankle) is expected to play during Monday's game at Minnesota after being listed as a game-time decision earlier in the day, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Matthews missed the team's previous game after suffering a sprained right ankle last Friday. "Made a lot of progress," Matthews said of his ankle. "The pain’s going down a lot. (There are) still certain movements that I’m sure will irritate it, but it’s just going to be dependent on if I can play through it or not and be effective. I’m not going to jump out here if I don’t feel like I can help the team and be beneficial."
Analysis: Matthews participated in the team's shootaround Monday, however, he did not exert too much energy on his ailing right ankle. He also donned a heavy wrap around his ankle, but was still grimacing in pain as he made cuts on the court. Matthews' game doesn't involve as much slashing as spotting up along the perimeter, which appears to have helped him return to the court quicker. Fantasy owners should still keep close tabs during the game as he represents a quality scoring option in the majority of formats when healthy.

Matthews remains optimistic

News: Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews (ankle), who was held out Saturday against the Jazz, told the Columbian that he remains optimistic about playing Monday against the Timberwolves. Matthews sustained a right ankle sprain Friday against Utah and has missed one game already. He is listed as day to day with the injury.
Analysis: Matthews appeared to be available to play Saturday night, but will instead take some rest to recover from his sprained ankle, which is a positive sign for Fantasy owners, especially since he seemed to be in a great deal of pain Friday night. He also seems to be targeting Monday's game at Minnesota, so we'll continue to monitor his progress in the coming days. Matthews was averaging 12.2 points, 3.8 assists and 2.4 rebounds over his last five games and should be stashed in all Fantasy formats until he is back in action.

He finished with nine points, three rebounds and two blocks in an 86-77 defeat. According to Comcast SportsNet Northwest, Matthews is not expected to play Saturday.
