Hayward: Jazz PF Favors has 'been excellent for us'

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/11/2015) Jazz shooting guard Gordon Hayward praised power forward Derrick Favors, who has averaged 17.7 points and 8.8 rebounds since the All-Star break, Wednesday, the Deseret News reports.

"He's been excellent for us," Hayward said. "Especially since he's been able to move to the four (power forward position), he's been great defensively, provides another shot-blocker at the rim, a rim protector. And then the way he's been (playing) in the fourth quarter, making shots, hitting that mid-range jump shot has really opened up the floor for all of us. When he's hitting that shot, we're really tough to guard because they have to respect that shot and it opens up the 3s, it opens up the drives, and he's been playing really well for us — really well."

The Jazz have also stepped things up defensively, but the play of Favors has been a key factor in winning seven of their last nine games.

"I think I've took on more of a scoring role since the All-Star break," Favors said. "Obviously we traded Enes and teams are scouting us a little differently. So I just took it upon myself to just be another offensive threat out there on the court. Basically I just want to continue to get better on the offensive end and continue to improve my game and my range."

Favors has averaged 16.4 points and 8.3 rebounds in 59 games.

(2/7/2015) Jazz small forward Gordon Hayward scored 30 points on 13 of 23 shooting from the field, including 3 of 8 from 3-point range, in Utah's 102-90 win over the Kings Saturday.

It was Hayward's first 30-plus point scoring output since Jan. 16. He added three assists, two rebounds and two steals to his totals.

Jazz coach Quin Snyder compared him Grant Hill.

"That's a comparison I probably shouldn't make because it's not fair to Gordon right now," Snyder said. "I'm talking more about his demeanor. There were times I remember Grant didn't look like he was doing all that, but he was competing so hard. I see that in Gordon.

"There's times he makes it look easy because he doesn't look like he's (exerting himself), but he's competing," Snyder said. "He's playing with a lot of confidence right now."

Gordon started to build confidence after making his first couple of shots.

"The first two shots I had felt like I had a good rhythm after that," Hayward said. "They were going under on some screens and made them pay early. I got some easy ones, some transition buckets. Anytime you do that, it's definitely a good feeling. The basket gets a little wider and I hit some step-backs and the game kind of went on from there."
