Kevin Seraphin stays put with Wizards

(7/18/2014) The Wizards have come to terms with free agent forward Kevin Seraphin on a $3.8 million qualifying offer, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports on Friday. Seraphin, 24, averaged 4.7 points and 2.4 rebounds in 10.9 minutes over 53 games for the Wizards last season.

Seraphin has not played in the last eight games, but Wednesday's absence was a coach's decision. He might struggle to find playing time moving forward, and is averaging just 5.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per game this season.

Seraphin was limited to 13 minutes off the bench Saturday against the Jazz, his fourth straight appearances after playing just one minute combined in four previous games.

Seraphin scored six points on 3 of 5 shooting with three rebounds in the game, his third-highest scoring total of the month. He has appeared in just nine of 15 games, and is averaging 5.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in January.

Seraphin was productive in his limited playing time, scoring six points on 3 of 4 shooting. He added two rebounds and one assist, while turning the ball over twice in a 106-99 loss.

Seraphin has appeared in 21 games this season, but is playing the smallest role of his career, averaging only 9.7 minutes per game. He is adding 4.7 points and 2.0 rebounds, his worst totals since his rookie season.

Seraphin, who has been dealing with the soreness for a few days, underwent an MRI on the sore knee but the test didn't reveal anything. He has averaged 4.7 points and 9.6 minutes over 20 games.

Seraphin logged 20 minutes off the bench and converted 7 of 12 field goal attempts. He added two free throws and finished the game with 16 points, three rebounds and one assist in a 113-97 defeat.

"We're trying to help him on defense," said his teammate Nene. "The assistant coaches talk to him, Al (Harrington), myself, and the other guys. We give him advice on defense . … (He needs to) have that read automatic in a game. That's what he needs to practice. He needs to put in his mind. He needs to visualize it to use during the game."

Seraphin could step up and see some additional minutes to start the season while Omeka Okafor recovers from a herniated disc. He averaged 9.1 points and 4.4 boards while shooting 46.1 percent from the field last season.
