Hornets' Gary Neal doubtful, P.J. Hairston probable for Wednesday

(11/25/2014) Hornets have announced that guard Gary Neal is doubtful for Wednesday against the Trail Blazers with a shoulder injury and P.J. Hairston is probable with an ankle injury.

Neal, who is averaging 12.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, left Monday's game against the Clippers and didn't return. Hairston, who is averaging 5.4 points per game, has missed the last four.

Neal was questionable to play Saturday with a foot injury but came off the bench to play 11 minutes before suffering his injury. He scored four points on 1 of 5 shooting while grabbing three rebounds. Neal will have to pass the concussion protocol before being cleared to resume action.

All four players were listed as questionable Saturday, but it appears the only player the Hornets will be without is Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Of the four, Williams is the one hurting the most, the Charlotte Observer reports.

All four played Friday, with Stephenson scoring 13 points in 38 minutes, Walker scoring 19 points in 35 minutes, Neal scoring 14 points in 25 minutes off the bench and Williams scoring five points in 23 minutes.

(11/12/2014) Hornets guard Gary Neal nearly sent Tuesday's game against the Trail Blazers to overtime.

With his team down two and less than four seconds remaining in the game, Neal drove past Damian Lillard for a layup as time expired. However, after further review from the officials, Neal did not release the ball before the buzzer, giving Portland a 102-100 victory.

Neal finished with nine points on 3 of 7 shooting from the field, including 0 of 2 from downtown, and 3 of 3 from the free throw line. He also added three assists, two rebounds and one steal while logging 24 minutes of game action. He is averaging 14.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists over his last five games.

Neal appeared to be hit in the eye during a possession in the first half of the team's game against the Heat. He'll be evaulated in the back before the team likely makes an announcement regarding his status.

(11/1/2014) Hornets guard Lance Stephenson endured a rough outing and was benched in the fourth quarter in favor of Gary Neal in his team's 71-69 defeat to the Grizzlies at home Saturday night. Stephenson finished with only two points on 1 of 6 shooting from the field.

Following the game, coach Steve Clifford voiced his frustration with his Stephenson's play.

''He just didn't play very well,'' Clifford said. ''I coach to win. I went with the team that played the best. The guys that know what they're doing out there and played the best are the guys that played. The guys that continue to play like that will be the guys that play.''

(10/2/2014) Hornets head coach Steve Clifford told reporters on Tuesday that guard Gary Neal has had arguably the best training camp of any player on his team, according to the Charlotte Observer.

"With coming to Charlotte and playing right away, there was only so much you could do off the court" to improve conditioning, Neal said. "I had to save my energy for the games.When I first came to the Spurs I was thought of as just a guy who stands in the corner" waiting to take 3-pointers, Neal said. "That kind of stuck with me, but every year in the NBA my game has advanced and evolved."

Neal has lost approximately 23 pounds since joining the team last February. He averaged 11.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists over 22 games with Charlotte last season.

Neal scored nine points on 3 of 6 from the floor, including 1 of 4 from downtown, and 2 of 2 from the free throw line. He also chipped in with six rebounds, one assist and one steal while logging 21 minutes of game action. He is averaging 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds over his last three games.

(3/19/2014) Though he was benched last week, Bobcats guard Gary Neal has mostly remained on his best behavior since escaping Milwaukee at the trade deadline. He put together another solid game Wednesday, in a 104-99 loss to the Nets.

Neal dropped 17 points in just 27 minutes off the bench, shooting 5 of 9 from the field with three 3-pointers made. He added one rebound and one assists while avoiding even a single turnover in the loss.

Neal has now appeared in 11 games for the Bobcats, and has scored in double figures in all but two of those games. He is averaging 13.3 points per game since the trade.

(3/12/2014) Bobcats guard Gary Neal wouldn't give any details on his benching Wednesday, but he did tell the Charlotte Observer following the game it would not be an issue moving forward.

"I made a mistake," Neal said. "Me and coach talked about it and we'll move forward from there."

Neal has been playing well recently, averaging 11.2 points in 26.8 minutes per game over five appearances prior to his benching. According to coach Steve Clifford, this incident should not impact Neal's role when the Bobcats take the floor next, Friday against Minnesota.

Neal ran into some trouble with teammates in Milwaukee earlier in the season, but the Charlotte Observer reports he was on the bench interacting with teammates at gametime. The team will likely give more information on this situation following the game.

Neal shot 3 of 11 from the floor, including 2 of 4 from downtown, and 2 of 2 from the free throw line. He also tallied five assists while logging 33 minutes of game action. He is averaging 12.3 points and 2.3 assists over his first three games with the Bobcats.
