Raptors' Dwayne Casey explains low minutes for Jonas Valanciunas

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(11/15/2014) Raptors coach Dwayne Casey defended his use of center Jonas Valanciunas, according to the Toronto Sun on Saturday.

After logging 28.2 minutes per game last season, Valanciunas has registered only 22.8 minutes per contest through the first eight games of the season. Casey added that it has nothing to do with the 22-year-old's growth, and more to do with Toronto opting for a "quicker and smaller" lineup.

"No. Jonas is where he needs to be right now," Casey said. "He is not a guy who is going to come in and dominate. We are not a post-up oriented team."

Despite the lack of playing time, Valanciunas is still averaging 10.0 points. 7.3 boards and 1.3 blocks per game while shooting 48.1 percent from the field this season.

Raptors expect Jonas Valanciunas to be 'more involved' on offense

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/1/2014) Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas said he spent part of the summer working with former NBA center Hakeem Olajuwon, according to the Toronto Sun.

"I worked a lot this summer. I was working out with Hakeem with a running coach, so I think that’s going to help me out a lot, especially in the low post," Valanciunas said. "He’s one of the greatest players. He moves fantastic, so I want to get something from him and I want to use something that he taught me."

The work with Olajuwon could pay dividends for Valanciunas since his teammates are expecting him to have a bigger role on offense this season.

"We have to start games off (feeding Valanciunas in the post), we need him, we’re going to put some pressure on him to score the ball for us," guard Kyle Lowry said. "We can’t just do all guard-oriented types of things. We have to make sure he’s more involved and have to put a little pressure on him to score the ball."

Valanciunas could very well be dealing with some fatigue considering he has played in all 52 of Toronto's game before the All-Star break, averaging 10.6 points, 8.8 rebounds on 46.7 percent shooting over that span.

"I haven't had any time to rest this year and it's been a tough schedule," Valanciunas said. "So, yeah, maybe I feel a little more tired, but I can't complain. I hope this break will be good for me."
