Wittman emphatic that SF Paul Pierce to stay with Wizards

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/26/2015) Randy Wittman has made it clear that he expects aging small forward Paul Pierce to remain with the Wizards next season.

When asked about it, he snapped "yeah," reports CSNWashington.com, which is further claiming that the view of several people with knowledge of the situation also believe Pierce will stay despite his opportunity to opt out for a bigger payday in free agency.

The 37-year-old Pierce, who performed brilliantly in the playoffs, was paid $5.5 million last year and could exercise his option and re-sign for an extra $1.1 million. It has also been rumored that Pierce will be courted by the Clippers or return to Boston to play out the rest of his career.

Report: Paul Pierce 'definitely' plans to play next season

by Elliott Smith | Staff Writer
(6/20/2015) Wizards forward Paul Pierce said he "definitely" plans to play next season, but the team for which he plays is yet to be determined, per ESPN.com.

Pierce wants to opt out of his deal with the Wizards, giving him the flexibility to choose a return to Washington or a move to the Clippers, where he would join his former coach Doc Rivers.

The Clippers can offer Pierce the mid-level exception, worth about $3.4 million, while the Wizards can make Pierce a deal worth more than $6 million once he opts out.

Pierce averaged 11.9 points in the regular season and 14.6 points in the playoffs.

On Monday, NBA.com's David Aldridge reported that Pierce may opt out of his Wizards' contract this offseason to sign with either the Clippers or Celtics.

Randy Wittman confident that Paul Pierce will return to Wizards

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(5/16/2015) After the Wizards were eliminated on Friday, 37-year-old Paul Pierce wasn't ready to say that he would return next year for an 18th NBA season.

His coach is more confident, however.

" I’d love him back. I think he wants to be back. I don’t know, I won’t put words in his mouth, but I’d be surprised if he didn’t. I think what he saw with these guys and the heart this team has. Why wouldn’t you want to play the end of your career with a group like that," Randy Wittman said on Saturday, per the Washington Post.

Wizards F Paul Pierce: I might have nothing left in tank

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/16/2015) Perhaps it was an overreaction to the emotion he felt following a surreal ending to the Friday night playoff game in Washington and to his season. But seemingly ageless small forward Paul Pierce has indicated that the shot that left his hand a split-second too late to save his team could be his last in the NBA.

The 37-year-old Pierce swished a 3-pointer from the corner that would have tied Game 6 and kept the Wizards alive. But after examining replays, the officials waved it off. And when Pierce walked off the court, awash in the agony of defeat, he wondered if it was all over.

"Truthfully, what was going through my mind is, I don't have too much of these efforts left, if any," he told the Washington Post. "These rides throughout the NBA season, throughout the playoffs, are very emotional. They take a lot out of not only your body, but your mind, your spirit."

Pierce was brilliant through most of the playoffs. He averaged 14.6 points in 30 minutes per game and buried two buzzer-beaters to give his team victories. He shot 44-of-83 (53 percent) from the field until the last two defeats to the Hawks, when he hit just 4-of-16.

Wizards forward Marcin Gortat struggles in Game 4

by Jason Lempert | Staff Writer
(5/12/2015) Wizards forward Marcin Gortat, who had been one of the team's top performers during the playoffs, struggled in Monday's Game 4 against the Hawks. After averaging 15 points in the team's first seven games, Gortat scored just three points on Monday with just eight total rebounds.

“We have to get him continually rolling to the basket,” Coach Randy Wittman said, per The Washington Post. “It was just one of those nights. You are going to have tough nights like that.”

Forward Paul Pierce explained the reason behind Gortat's poor game, noting that the Hawks had "effective double teams" and the rest of his teammates not getting the ball to him enough.

“He should have more touches than he did tonight,” Pierce said. “That is on us so we will look at the tape and figure this out.”

Wizards forward Paul Pierce buries game-winner in Game 3

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/9/2015) Wizards small forward Paul Pierce scored 13 points on 5 of 12 shooting from the field, including 3 of 7 from 3-point range, in Washington's 103-101 win over the Hawks in Game 3.

Wizards star Paul Pierce gives tongue-lashing to Nets

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(4/14/2015) Future Hall of Fame forward Paul Pierce spoke candidly Tuesday about his disastrous season with the Nets a year ago, calling it "horrible." He verbally trashed Brooklyn point guard Deron Williams in the process.

"It was just the guys' attitudes there," Pierce told ESPN. "It wasn't like we were surrounded by a bunch of young guys. They were vets who didn't want to play and didn't want to practice. I was looking around saying, 'what's this?' Kevin (Garnett) and I had to pick them up every day in practice.

"If me and Kevin weren't there, that team would have folded up. That team would have packed it in. We kept them going each and every day.

"Before I got there, I looked at Deron as an MVP candidate. But I felt once we got there, that's not what he wanted to be. He just didn't want that. ... I think a lot of the pressure got to him sometimes. This was his first time in the national spotlight. The media in Utah is not the same as the media in New York."

Pierce added that he is "much happier" with the Wizards, who are heading to the playoffs. Meanwhile, Williams and the Nets have lost their last two games and are on the brink of elimination.
