76ers PG Isaiah Canaan sprains ankle, will not return Wednesday

(9:17 pm ET) 76ers point guard Isaiah Canaan will not return to Wednesday's game against the Wizards due to a sprained right ankle, the team announced.

Canaan suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter with his team down big, so he would be unlikely to return regardless of the severity of the injury. He finished the game with 18 points on 7 of 12 shooting, including 4 of 9 shooting from 3-point range, while racking up six assists, three rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes off the bench.

The 76ers have a few days off before facing the Hornets Saturday.


76ers Ish Smith moves into starting lineup

(3/18/2015) 76ers guard Ish Smith will start Wednesday night against the Pistons, according to Calkins Media. 

Smith moves into a starting role with guard Isaiah Canaan moving to the bench. In his previous five games, Smith has averaged 13.4 points and six assists. Since joining the Sixers, Smith is averaging 11 points.

Canaan, since he joined Philadelphia, is posting over 13 points a game but is only averaging 3.5 assists per game.

(3/11/2015) 76ers guard Isaiah Canaan sank four of his eight three-point attempts en route to a 20-point outing in Wednesday's 104-95 overtime loss to the Bulls. 

Canaan shot 7-of-15 from the field and made both of his free-throw attempts. Canaan also had three rebounds and two turnovers. Since joining the 76ers, Canaan is averaging 14.2 points per game. 

Guard Ish Smith led the 76ers in scoring with 23.

(3/11/2015) 76ers point guard Ish Smith will draw the start in Wednesday's game against the Bulls, but Isaiah Canaan (illness) will also see action off the bench, Sixers.com reports.

Canaan has been battling an upper respiratory infection, which cost him the lsat two days of practice. He has averaged 13.6 points, 3.9 assists and 3.0 rebounds in nine games with the 76ers.

The 76ers are 6 1/2-point home underdogs Wednesday.

(3/10/2015) 76ers coach Brett Brown said Tuesday he expects guard Isaiah Canaan and center Nerlens Noel to play in Wednesday’s game against the Bulls, reports the team's official website.

Canaan is dealing with an upper respiratory infection, which has caused him to miss the last two days of practice. Meanwhile, Noel has been dealing with a shin injury, but he was able to practice Tuesday and said he is feeling good, reports the Bucks County Courier Times.

"It's just something you rest a little bit, it goes away," he said.

(3/9/2015) An upper respiratory infection caused 76ers guard Isaiah Canaan to miss Monday's practice, reports CSNPhilly.com. He is considered questionable for Wednesday's game against the Bulls.

A shin injury also prevented center Nerlens Noel from participating in Monday's practice. Coach Brett Brown said Noel should be able to practice Tuesday and play in Wednesday's game.


76ers' Isaiah Canaan scores career-high 31 vs. Thunder

(3/4/2015) 76ers point guard Isaiah Canaan scored a career-high 31 points on 10 of 16 shooting, including 8 of 13 shooting from three-point range, in his team's 123-118 overtime loss to the Thunder Wednesday.

On most other nights, Canaan's performance would have been the focus of the game, but the 76ers came up against Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, who posted a 49-16-10 line while becoming the first player since Michael Jordan in 1989 to record four straight triple-doubles. Canaan racked up seven rebounds, six assists and one steal in 42 minutes in the loss.

The 76ers will square off against the Jazz Friday.


76ers' Isaiah Canaan on increased role: 'It's challenging'

(2/26/2015) 76ers guard Isaiah Canaan said Thursday his increased role with his new team is challenging has he tries to improve his conditioning, the Bucks County Courier Times reports.

"It's challenging," Canaan said. "Now you've got to get your game shape up to par."

Coach Brett Brown also said that conditioning has been a factor with his new players. "They're a C or C-minus because they haven't played," Brown said.

After averaging 14.8 minutes in 25 games with the Rockets this season, Canaan has averaged 30.7 minutes in three games played since the trade, scoring 12.0 points and dishing out 4.0 assists per game.


Sixers guard Isaiah Canaan will start Sunday

(2/22/2015) Guard Isaiah Canaan will play and start in his first game as a member of the 76ers on Sunday at Orlando, reports CSNPhilly.com.

Coach Brett Brown said Canaan is the team's starting point guard. Canaan was recently acquired in a trade with the Rockets. He said his biggest asset is his scoring ability.

"I was blessed with the ability to score the basketball," Canaan said. "But I do whatever I am asked to do. If they need me to go out there and score, I can do that. If it is about getting my teammates involved, I love to do that. It is a matter of whatever it takes to get the victory."

The 76ers are 8-point underdogs.

(2/19/2015) The 76ers traded rookie forwawrd K.J. McDaniels to the Rockets for guard Isaiah Canaan and a second-round pick, according to Yahoo! Sports.

The 76ers took McDaniels with the 32nd overall pick in the second round of the 2014 NBA draft. Canaan was taken by the Rockets with the 34th overall pick in the second round of the 2013 draft.

The trade was executed shortly before Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline.

(12/24/2014) The Rockets are shopping players from the bottom third of their roster Wednesday to clear a spot for small forward Josh Smith, ESPN reports.

Smith committed to joining the Rockets early Wednesday and passed through waivers later in the day, but now the team needs to make some room on the roster to bring him in. The candidates to move include Clint Capela, Isaiah Canaan, Tarik Black, Nick Johnson and Joey Dorsey.

Smith is expected to join the starting lineup once he's ready to roll. He averaged 13.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.7 blocks and 1.3 steals in 28 game with the Pistons.

Ariza is averaging 14.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists through 22 games played. His big man, Dwight Howard (knee) was also upgraded to probable.

Meanwhile, Isaiah Canaan (ankle), Francisco Garcia (ankle), Kostas Papanikolaou (knee) and Terrence Jones (knee) will remain sidelined against Denver.

(12/12/2014) Rockets point guard Isaiah Canaan participated in pregame drills Thursday in hopes of being cleared to return from a sprained ankle Saturday, the Houston Chronicle reports.

"We still have to see what J.B. (Jason Biles, the Rockets head athletic trainer) thinks, but it’s a few days before the next game so it (returning to the court) is right around the corner," Canaan said. "I kind of stepped it up. I did a little bit back at home, but not so much moving. These next few days I want to do a lot more to see how it really is."

Canaan won't have an opportunity to practice before Saturday's game, so the team may decide to keep him out this weekend in order to see how his ankle responds to a full practice session. He's been sidelined since suffering the injury Nov. 28.

Canaan played 32 minutes with Patrick Beverley sidelined and took advantage of the opportunity, also racking up six rebounds, four assists and four steals in the win. He hadn't made more than three three-pointers in a game this season before doubling his season high Wednesday. The Rockets are set to face the Clippers Friday.
