Wolves' Muhammad credits recent success to weight loss, D-League

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(2/15/2015) Timberwolves guard Shabazz Muhammad is averaging nearly 10 more points per game than he did during his rookie season and he attributes his success to weight loss and the experience he gained while playing in the NBA D-League, reports BasketballInsiders.com.

Muhammad has lost nearly 30 pounds since his rookie season, which he said has made him more athletic.

"I mean, last year I couldn't really get up or be as quick as I wanted to be. Now, I'm pretty quick and can play either the two or three position. I think that's a big thing for me," he said.

Muhammad played in 37 games during his rookie season and averaged 3.9 points per game. Now in his second year, Muhammad has already played 37 games and averages 13.6 points.

Along with the weight loss, Muhammad credits a brief stint in the NBA Development League for helping him regain his confidence.

"It definitely helped and gave me some confidence," Muhammad said. "Growing up, I've always been a good player in high school and college so when I first got here [in Minnesota], I just needed to build some confidence by going to the D-League. I really liked how the D-League prepared me for the future and I'm happy I went there and did what I did."
