Nuggets' Jusuf Nurkic expected to play Friday despite sore back

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(1/22/2015) Nuggets rookie center Jusuf Nurkic was unable to finish practice on Thursday because of a sore back. Nurkic suffered the injury Monday against Golden State. However, he is still expected to play Friday night against Boston, per the Denver Post. Nurkic is averaging 6.6 points and 5.6 boards through his first 30 games in the league.

Denver is a 7 1/2-point home favorite, according to VegasInsider.com.

Nuggets ready to unleash Jusuf Nurkic

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(1/7/2015) Nuggets center Jusuf Nurkic, the 16th overall pick in this year's draft, has looked like one of the steals of his class through the first two months of his career. The Nuggets have been so impressed with his play so far they moved incumbent starting center Timofey Mozgov to the Cavaliers Wednesday, clearing up plenty of playing time for the 20-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has Fantasy players salivating.

Nurkic has been a dominant presence of late, averaging 12.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game over the last five. He is a massive presence near the basket, and his physical play has led to him drawing 2.3 free throw attempts per game, despite taking just 5.2 field-goal attempts. His upside is obvious, based on what we've seen from him, but that same physicality that makes him such a handful for opposing defenses also makes it hard for him to stay on the floor.

Nurkic's per-36 minute numbers are impressive, as he's putting up 17.4 points, 13.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 3.1 blocks up in that time. If he could sustain even 60 percent of that, he'd be an easy starting option for Fantasy. However, Nurkic also racks up fouls at an astronomical rate, playing just 28.1 minutes for ever six fouls drawn. At that kind of rate, it will be tough for him to even average 25 minutes per game, given how risk averse coaches tend to be with foul-prone big men.

Nurkic should be added in most 12-team or deeper leagues at this point, based on upside alone. However, if you expect him to immediately become a starting Fantasy option, you might end up disappointed. He's still developing, and there are going to be bumps in the road, as with any young big man.

Nuggets C Jusuf Nurkic impressing coach Brian Shaw

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(12/28/2014) Nuggets coach Brian Shaw praised the work of rookie center Jusuf Nurkic, the Denver Post reports.

"He's a guy that I have confidence throwing the ball inside to," Shaw said. "He can post, and he can score. And if he doesn't have that, he's shown the propensity to make plays for his teammates when they cut off him. I think now his teammates are starting to cut harder when he has the ball, because they know he'll pass it."

"He's fearless," Shaw added. "And he's very, very physical. And that's what we need on this team. So, he provides a much-needed ingredient for our team."

Nurkic has averaged 5.1 points and 4.5 rebounds in 18 games, but he's started to see increased minutes in the last two weeks.

Nuggets sign first-rounders Jusuf Nurkic, Gary Harris

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(8/6/2014) The Nuggets inked both of their first-round picks to rookie-scale deals last week, as the team announced the signings of center Jusuf Nurkic and guard Gary Harris.

Kurkic was considered a possible draft-and-stash option, but the 19-year-old out of Bosnia opted to head to the NBA after becoming the 16th overall pick. Harris was taken 19th overall after a two-year career at Michigan State, which saw him averaging 16.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.
