It is unlikely that he would be able to sustain that with the return of Rudy Gay to the lineup, but if he earns the starting job he could emerge as a low-end Fantasy option who racks up steals and blocks from the guard spot and doesnt hurt you offensively. This was the second-best year of Allen's career from a scoring standpoint behind 2006-07 when he averaged 11.5 points for Boston.
Analysis: Allen is viewed as a defensive stopper for the Grizzlies, but his offense is inconsistent. He will remain a key role player for Memphis, but the wing spots could be crowded next season with Rudy Gay (shoulder) coming back and potentially free agent Shane Battier. Still, Allen will play his role, but Fantasy owners shouldn't count on him for much offense. He is not worth drafting in the majority of leagues in 2011-12.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen helped the eighth-seeded Grizzlies win the first playoff game in franchise history during Game 1 against the Spurs. Allen finished with seven points during the 101-98 win on 2 of 6 shooting from the field. He briefly left in the second period with a calf injury but returned and went 3 of 6 from the charity stripe. Allen also chipped in with three assists, three rebounds and a steal while logging 25 minutes.
Analysis: As expected, the minor "knee", injury that supposedly sidelined Allen for the final two games of the regular season was not an issue against the Spurs. While Allen's offensive contributions weren't much to write home about in Game 1, he did a great job defending out on the perimeter. Allen had a pretty decent year with the Grizzlies this season as he finished with the second highest scoring average of his career (8.9). He also started 31 games and shot 51 percent from the field for the second straight season. However, the 29-year-old's production was a bit consistent offensively, which makes it hard to keep him active for long stretches in most formats. Allen can be considered a low-end Fantasy option, whose value lies in deeper formats heading into the 2011-12 season.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen sat out Tuesday's game at Portland to rest for the playoffs, and coach Lionel Hollins indicated that Allen will likely sit again Wednesday night at the Clippers. He apparently is dealing with a minor knee injury, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Tonys hurt, Hollins said. Tonys knee swelled up. He would have played (Tuesday) if I would have let him but I dont know how effective he would have been.
Analysis: Allen will be fine for the start of the playoffs, and his knee injury should be of little concern. When healthy, Allen is a quality Fantasy option in all leagues, but the Grizzlies will keep him reserved against the Clippers. Fantasy owners in daily leagues should plan on being without Allen for Wednesday's game.
News: As expected, Grizzlies guard Tony Allen did not play during Tuesday's contest against the Trail Blazers in an effort to rest before the playoffs start, reports the team's official website. The team has not announced his status for Wednesday's season finale against the Clippers. Allen is averaging 8.9 points and 2.7 rebounds in 72 games this season.
Analysis: The Grizzlies are already in the playoffs, which is why coach Lionel Hollins has opted to give some of his starters a rest. However, Memphis is still jockeying to improve their seed, so there is a chance Allen could play in Wednesday's season finale against the Clippers. Fantasy owners in daily formats should continue to monitor the situation moving forward. Allen can be considered solid low-end Fantasy option in deeper category-based leagues based on his ability to fill up a stat sheet.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen had himself a night on Saturday with Indiana in town. Allen scored 19 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds to help the Grizzlies beat the Pacers 99-78. "I think he's done a nice job of finding his niche in the league with finding places to score," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said of Allen, known more for his defense. "If you double him, he cuts to the basket. He pushes the ball, he runs the lane, he attacks the basket, and he stays with what he does best." Allen also had six assists and six steals, while helping clamp down on Danny Granger on defense. Indiana's leading scorer went 5 for 15 from the field. "It's bigger than me," Allen said of his performance. "I'm looking at the standings every day for where we need to be. I'm just looking to do whatever I can to help whether it is passing out water, giving somebody a towel, congratulating someone or giving them advice about the previous play or the next play. I just want to be able to help in any way possible."
Analysis: Allen has stepped up for the Grizzlies as they finally have found a starting shooting guard. O.J. Mayo has been demoted to reserve role this year and rookie Xavier Henry wasn't the answer either. It seems Allen has found his niche in Memphis and he is excelling right now. Over his last five games he's averaging 13.8 points, 4.0 boards and 3.0 steals per contest. He doesn't take many 3-pointers and isn't known for his offensive production, but Allen is doing more than his part for Memphis. His numbers aren't great, but they are more than worth using in deeper category-based Fantasy leagues at this time.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen, still in the starting lineup for the injured Rudy Gay (shoulder) Monday against the Thunder, continues to play well on both ends of the floor. Though he drew NBA scoring leader Kevin Durant on defense and limited him to 8 of 20 shooting, Allen added 20 points on the offensive end. He did it efficiently, shooting 7 of 12 from the floor and 1 of 2 from beyond the arc. Allen added six rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal in the 107-101 win. "[It took] effort, grinds, a collective effort from the whole team," Allen said. "Guys are focused and locked in. Getting back-to-back wins against these two top teams (Dallas on Sunday), pretty much shows that we are very ambitious."
Analysis: Allen had a pivotal role in Boston for six season's as the team's best on-ball defender, drawing the best player on the other team. He's carried that role over to a young Memphis team in a larger way than before, notching career-highs in steals and blocks despite just under a quarter of the season still to play. Allen hasn't sacrificed it for offense either, notching double-figures in nine of the last 12 games including four 20-point efforts. Fantasy owners should expect his solid play to continue in the place of Gay, who's still due to be sidelined for another week. Allen should be used as a low-end Fantasy option in most formats, with a bit more added value in category-based leagues because of his defensive numbers.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen started and played extremely well on Tuesday night following the All-Star break. Playing in Denver, Allen filled in nicely for injured star Rudy Gay as he scored a game-high-tying 26 points on 8 for 15 shooting over 31 minutes. He went 10 for 14 from the line and added eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Analysis: Allen, averaging just 6.9 points per game on the season, has been in double figures in five straight games for the Grizz. He's averaging 18 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game over his last five and he's shooting 56 percent from the field over that span. For as long as Gay is out, it looks like Allen might become a viable option at least in all deeper formats.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen scored 27 points on 9 of 12 shooting over 40 minutes just a couple games ago in Oklahoma City. Allen can obviously score when given minutes and asked to do so and that could happen more often over the next four weeks with Rudy Gay expected to miss that much time with a shoulder injury. Allen has been averaging 10.3 points and 2.1 steals per game over his last 10 contests with 24.8 minutes per night.
Analysis: Allen should see more minutes going forward, at least until Gay can return, and that could mean a nice boost in Fantasy value. He's scored in double figures in four straight games already and the absence of Roy will create a need for a scorer for the Grizzlies. Allen is definitely someone to monitor now in deeper leagues.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen played 32 minutes on Tuesday night during a win over Philadelphia. Allen shot 5 for 13 from the field in the contest and scored 10 points to lead all bench scorers for the Grizzlies. He added three rebounds and two steals.
Analysis: Allen scored 27 points at Oklahoma City on Feb. 8 and has scored in double figures in four straight games. That said, he's still only averaging 10.1 per game over his last 10 contests. Allen is not a major scorer normally but he's been a nice bench option for the Grizzlies of late. Fantasy might begin to take notice in deeper formats as he also chips in with some rebounds and steals on a nightly basis.
News: Replacing the injured Rudy Gay (back) in the starting lineup Tuesday night, Memphis guard Tony Allen had perhaps the best game of his NBA career against the Thunder. It wasn't limited to one end of the floor, either. Allen had the second-best scoring night of his pro career, netting a season-high 27 points on 9 of 12 shooting. Defensively, he harassed NBA scoring leader Kevin Durant and emerging weapon Russell Westbrook all night, contesting shots and registering five steals against the duo. Allen even blocked three shots on the night, just one off of his career-mark. "The guy was an all-pro all night on both ends of the floor -- 27 points and he made Kevin work for every shot. I thought he won the game for them," Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks said. "Certain guys in this league compete every possession, and he's one of them. He competes every possession, and I love guys that hate getting scored on."
Analysis: Allen's game has always been tilted to the defensive end, so his impact on the game on that end of the floor wasn't too much of a surprise. "He was just an unbelievable player on defense," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said of Allen. "Durant is a great player and he's going to score. I thought Tony kept him from going off and getting 40 on us." But on offense, Allen is a slasher who gets more points in transition than in any half-court set. Tuesday, he did it from all angels. It was just his first 20-point game of the season. Despite the career-night, Allen is still a low-end Fantasy option at best. His minutes will again drop off once Gay returns.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen recorded six points and three assists in the Grizzlies' 95-93 loss at Houston on Saturday night. Allen finished 3 for 6 from field and did not attempt a 3-point shot for the second game in a row to post six points for the third time in his last four games. Allen added a rebound but was hampered by foul trouble and committed five fouls in just 17 minutes of playing time.
Analysis: Since producing one of his best shooting performances of the season (15 points) against Washington on Jan. 29, Allen has managed just 4.5 points in his four games. He has not attempted more than six shots in that span, which includes a scoreless outing in his previous game before Saturday. He should only be considered in deeper leagues as a low-end Fantasy option.
News: After missing the last four games with a knee injury, Memphis guard Tony Allen returned to the court on Friday against Houston. He shot 2 for 4 from the field and converted both his foul shots, finishing with six points. He added three rebounds in his 12 minutes of action. The Grizzlies would go on to beat the Rockets, 115-110.
Analysis: Despite getting some starts this year, Allen hasn't done much with his playing time. He's 6.1 points and 1.1 assists per game this season for Memphis. He should not be on anyone's radar in any Fantasy format, so continue to ignore him.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen will play in the Grizzlies' game against Houston on Friday. Allen, who participated in practice Thursday, has missed the team's last four games with a knee injury.
Analysis: Allen has not been much of a Fantasy producer this season and is averaging 6.1 points and 1.1 assists per game. He is averaging just 15.1 minutes per game and should be left on waivers in most Fantasy leagues.
News: The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that Grizzlies SG Tony Allen is expected to return from a knee injury Friday against the Rockets.
Analysis: Allen has not been much of a Fantasy producer this season and is averaging 6.1 points and 1.1 assists per game. He has scored in double figures only nine times and is averaging just 15.1 minutes per game. Leave him on waivers in the majority of Fantasy leagues, healthy or not.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen missed his fourth straight game with a sore left knee in the Grizzlies' 103-102 overtime loss at New Orleans in Wednesday. Allen last played Jan. 10 against Charlotte and scored 13 points in a loss to the Bobcats. He is considered day-to-day.
Analysis: Allen has not been much of a Fantasy producer this season and is averaging 6.1 points and 1.1 assists per game. He has scored in double figures only nine times and is averaging just 15.1 minutes per game -- when healthy. Leave him on waivers in the majority of Fantasy leagues.
News: The Grizzlies held out G Tony Allen again on Monday afternoon against Chicago due to a sore left knee. It was the third consecutive game for which he was ruled out.
Analysis: Allen is averaging 24.5 minutes per game in January, but is only offering around nine points and three rebounds per game. Where he does excel is in the steals category. Outside of deeper category leagues, he is not a worthy Fantasy option.
News: Memphis G Tony Allen missed his second straight game on Saturday night against Dallas as he continued to deal with a sore left knee. He was ruled active for the contest but did not dress in the 89-70 win. Allen is averaging 6.1 points with two rebounds and 1.1 assists on the year.
Analysis: Allen can score when given minutes, as he showed with his 13 points in 32 minutes on 5 of 9 shooting last Monday, but he is of no service to Fantasy owners while on the bench. The problem with that is he has seen an average of just 15 minutes per contest this season. Since he was unable to play over the weekend, Allen will be a risky start for Week 13 (Jan. 17-23). Leave him on the bench in deeper Fantasy formats until he is healthy enough to return.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen, who missed Wednesday's game against Detroit with a sore knee, was back in action for Saturday's game against the Mavericks. He is averaging 6.1 points and 2.0 rebounds in 34 games this season.
Analysis: Allen can score when given minutes and he put up 13 points in 32 minutes on 5 of 9 shooting on Monday. He also had five steals and two blocks in that game. Consider him a low-end Fantasy option, when healthy.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen missed Wednesday's game in Detroit with a sore left knee. Sam Young started the game. Allen is considered day to day for the Grizzlies.
Analysis: Allen can score when given minutes and he put up 13 points in 32 minutes on 5 of 9 shooting on Monday. He also had five steals and two blocks in that game. The knee issue cropped up out of nowhere and he shouldn't miss much time. When healthy, Allen only has low-end Fantasy value.
News: Grizzlies guard Tony Allen was very efficient in Monday's 96-82 loss to the Bobcats. Allen scored 13 points in the contest on 5 of 9 shooting from the field. He went just 3 of 6 from the free-throw line but was able to chip in with five steals, four rebounds, two assists and pair of steals in 32 minutes.
Analysis: While Allen has remained in the starting lineup for Memphis, he continues too see very sporadic minutes, which hurts his Fantasy value. He is averaging 11.4 points and 1.6 assists over his last five contests and is shooting 48 percent (21 of 44) from the field over that stretch. Consider him a low-end Fantasy option in category-based formats for his ability to come up with steals.
News: The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that neither O.J. Mayo nor Tony Allen were disciplined after meeting with coach Lionel Hollins following a reported fight between the two players over a gambling debt. The incident occurred on the team's flight home from Los Angeles on Monday.
Analysis: The report notes that Allen apologized to the team and the team's general manager. It is also reported that a team insider says the situation is not expected to linger and no suspensions are expected. The fight is said to have been a "one-sided scrap" in which Allen "got the best" of Mayo. Allen scored 19 points on Tuesday against the Thunder and is said to have received congratulatory texts from Mayo. However, Allen simply capitalized (ironically) from the absence of Mayo and Xavier Henry. Allen remains a very low-end Fantasy option outside of deeper category leagues, where he is a sleeper in the steals category. He is averaging 3.4 steals per game in his last five.
News: Grizzlies guard Tony Allen scored a season-high 19 points in Tuesday's 110-105 win over the Thunder. Allen, who was making just his fourth start of the season, shot 6 of 13 from the field, including 2 of 3 from downtown. After sinking just one shot in the first two quarters, Allen scored 16 points in the second half, including two late free throws which helped clinch the victory. He also chipped in with with three steals, two rebounds and two assists while logging 32 minutes.
Analysis: With O.J. Mayo and Xavier Henry not available for the Grizzlies, Allen made his fourth start of the season. He actually has been a decent contributor off the bench for Memphis this season, however, his sporadic minutes make him tough to start in most Fantasy formats. Consider him a low-end Fantasy guard whose value lies in deeper leagues at the moment.
News: Memphis saw starting shooting guard Xavier Henry scratched at the last minute prior to Monday's game against Toronto. The Grizzlies started Sam Young at the position but he saw only six minutes of run. While O.J. Mayo also struggled in added time, guard Tony Allen benefited the most from Henry's absence. Allen played 34 minutes and shot 5 of 9 from the field to score 14 points. He added eight rebounds, six steals, two assists and a block.
Analysis: Allen's game on Monday is tough to explain. The Grizzlies had an injury to starter Xavier Henry. Instead of starting O.J. Mayo, they start Sam Young, who plays only six minutes. Meanwhile, Allen has the best game of any shooting guard on the roster out of the blue. What does this mean for Allen? We can't really see him gaining Fantasy value despite his solid performance. Should this continue, that will of course change.
News: Grizzlies G Tony Allen received his first start of the year on Saturday night against the Spurs with Rudy Gay sitting out due to a suspension. He took advantage of the opportunity by scoring a season-high 15 points and hauling in three rebounds in the 112-106 overtime loss. He went 5 of 9 from the field, including 1 for 1 from downtown, and converted 4 of 7 free throws. Allen, who played 29 minutes, also had an assist, a steal and a block in the defeat.
Analysis: Allen had only seen about 11 minutes per game coming into Saturday night but he did a solid job of filling in for the suspended Gay. He has scored in double figures four times this season but does not stand to see an improved role in the near future. With Gay expected back Tuesday against the Nets, leave Allen on waivers in all but the deepest of Fantasy formats.
News: Grizzlies guard Tony Allen scored a season-high 11 points in Saturday's 116-110 overtime loss to the Celtics. He logged 21 minutes, going 4 for 7 from the field and 3 for 4 from the foul line. His previous high was 10 points, which he had in back-to-back games to end October. Allen added four rebounds, three assists and three steals for Memphis.
Analysis: Despite this being his best outing of the year, Allen should not be on any Fantasy owner's radars. He's a role player off the bench for the Grizzlies, which means these types of performances will be few and far between. Continue to ignore him in the majority of Fantasy leagues.
News: Grizzlies G Tony Allen had a productive game coming off the bench on Friday night against the Mavericks. He scored 10 points on 4 of 5 shooting while playing 14 minutes in the 91-90 win. Allen made 2 of 4 free throws and also contributed with two rebounds.
Analysis: Allen is not expected to have a big role with the Grizzlies this season but he can still score when given the opportunity. He will need to put together a few more performances like Friday's before he become relevant in Fantasy, so continue to leave him on the bench as a reserve in deeper leagues.
News: Grizzlies SG Tony Allen suited up for Friday's preseason finale against the Pistons after missing three games with an ankle injury. Allen had 12 points and five assists in 24 minutes off the bench. He also has three rebounds and two steals.
Analysis: Allen got some extra playing time Friday since Memphis rested some of its regulars. Allen will be a reserve guard off the bench that will most of the time be more important to his real team than Fantasy owners. Allen has marginal Fantasy appeal when healthy.
News: Veteran G Tony Allen missed his third straight game for the Grizzlies with a sore right ankle on Monday against the Hornets.
Analysis: Allen averaged 6.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game last year with Boston. The veteran guard signed with Memphis in the offseason to add leadership and depth off the bench. He has just low-end Fantasy value and should not be drafted.
News: Memphis guard Tony Allen scored 10 points , grabbed two boards and had two assists in Thursday's overtime win against Atlanta. He made all four of his foul shots and went 3 for 4 from the field.
Analysis: Allen averaged 6.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game last year with Boston. The veteran guard signed with Memphis in the offseason to add leadership and depth off the bench. That's what he did on Thursday and is what Fantasy owners can expect from him this season. Unfortunately that won't give him much Fantasy value in most formats.
News: Free agent guard Tony Allen signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. Allen averaged 6.1 points per game in 54 appearances for the Celtics during the 2009-10 regular season.
Analysis: Allen will provide depth off the bench and veteran leadership, but that is about it. He won't play enough minutes to matter in most Fantasy formats.
News: Celtics guard Tony Allen did not play in Tuesday's game against the Bulls due to flu-like symptoms.
Analysis: Over his previous five games, Allen logged 16.8 minutes a game, averaging 3.6 points and 2.2 assists. A role player for the Celtics, he has little if any Fantasy value.
News: According to Comcast Sports Net New England, Celtics G Tony Allen is questionable for Tuesday's game at Chicago. He is dealing with a fever.
Analysis: Allen is getting only around 17 minutes per game off the bench and even with the Celtics looking to rest some of their primary players for the playoffs he is not getting major minutes. Leave him unowned in all Fantasy leagues.
News: The Boston Globe reported on Wednesday that Celtics coach Doc Rivers said guard Tony Allen will remain the last man in the team's rotation off the bench until his play improves. On Wednesday night against Denver, he saw 20 minutes for the first time in a long time and scored 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting.
Analysis: Allen certainly gave Rivers what he asked for, didn't he? Still, he is going to have to be a bit more consistent before he gains any Fantasy value back. He should be left for the deepest of leagues.
News: Boston G Tony Allen returned to the lineup Sunday after missing Friday's game with a hip injury. Allen played just two minutes and shot 0 for 1 from the field while recording no other stats.
Analysis: Allen is averaging just four points in his last five contests and provides no Fantasy value. He can be left on waivers in all formats.
News: Celtics G Tony Allen did not play Friday against Philadelphia because of a hip injury.
Analysis: Allen is averaging just six points over his last five contests and is only seeing 15.8 minutes per contest. He can remain on waivers in all formats.
News: Despite straining a tendon in his right ankle on Thursday, Celtics G Tony Allen was back in the lineup and scored seven points in a 96-76 blowout of Portland on Friday. Allen played 25 minutes, shooting 3 of 7 from the field while adding four rebounds and two steals.
Analysis: Allen is averaging just six points per game over his last five games and just 14.8 minutes during that span. He doesn't contribute enough to warrant himself as a Fantasy threat and can be left on waivers.
News: Boston G Tony Allen strained a tendon in his right ankle in the first half of Thursday's game with the Lakers and did not return the Boston Globe reports. The report states it is uncertain how much time Allen will miss.
Analysis: Allen has seen limited minutes throughout the year and was just a stopgap that provided value in the deepest of leagues. He can remain on waivers in all formats.
News: Boston guard Tony Allen had a nice game Wednesday in a loss at New Orleans. Allen played just 24 minutes and shot 6 for 9 with 13 points. Allen added three steals and three rebounds.
Analysis: Allen played just 11 minutes in the team's previous game and doesn't see consistent time on the court. That limits his Fantasy potential a great deal. Unless he really begins to see more time, which is unlikely, he should only be used in the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: Celtics G Tony Allen had just four points in 11 minutes off the bench Sunday against Orlando. He returned to the bench due to the return of Paul Pierce from injury.
Analysis: Allen was not a factor off the bench against the Magic, but he has played well recently off the bench. His Fantasy value obviously takes a huge hit with Pierce back, but if he gets back to playing around 25 minutes per game he can have some stopgap appeal in deeper leagues.
News: With X-rays revealing that Paul Pierce did not suffer a broken foot and could possibly return on Sunday, Celtics G Tony Allen will find himself with reduced minutes the second Pierce returns.
Analysis: Even with more minutes, Allen was not a real scoring threat having averaged only 8.6 points over his last five games. While Allen could have been a nice stop-gap for a few games, the majority of shots will be going to Kevin Garnett or Ray Allen. Tony Allen showed only real Fantasy appeal in the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: According to a league source, Celtics F Paul Pierce may have a broken left foot. TNT analyst David Aldridge reports that the team does not know for sure if Pierce's foot is broken after X-rays taken Tuesday and that more tests are scheduled. But it "looks that way," the league source said. Pierce suffered the injury in the first half of Boston's 99-88 victory over Washington Monday night when he got tangled up with the Wizards' Caron Butler going for a loose ball. In his absence, players like Tony Allen and Eddie House could see an increased role.
Analysis: The report adds that the Celtics are hopeful that even if the foot is broken that Pierce won't be out of the lineup for long. But they are not yet certain of that. Fantasy owners should begin to look for alternatives, though this is not yet official. In his absence, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen should all take on a bigger role. But it will also give a chance to role players like Tony Allen and Eddie House to step up their production. Allen would likely see the more direct Fantasy impact and is worth a flier in deeper leagues, but House's shot attempts and perimeter presence would likely increase as well.
News: Boston guard Tony Allen came off the bench and proved to be a big spark for the Celtics in their narrow loss to the Lakers on Sunday. Allen scored 14 points in 25 minutes off the bench. He shot 6 for 9 from the field and added three rebounds, two steals and one block.
Analysis: Allen played well on Sunday in a big spot against the hated Lakers but hadn't scored in double figures in his previous seven games. He put up just three double-digit scoring efforts in the entire month of January and is clearly not a consistent threat for the Celtics. He has just low-end Fantasy appeal, though Boston does see a favorable four-game schedule in Week 15 (Feb. 1-7).
News: Boston guard Tony Allen recorded five points over 11 minutes in a win over the Clippers Monday night. Allen shot 2 for 5 and added two steals.
Analysis: Allen has just low-end Fantasy value as he's averaging 4.2 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game over his last five.
News: Boston G Tony Allen returned to the Celtic lineup Sunday after missing Friday's loss at Atlanta with flulike symptoms. Allen scored zero points and added two assists.
Analysis: Allen only played eight minutes in the loss, and now that Boston has a healthy back court, he will probably see minimal minutes. Fantasy owners should feel free to drop him or keep him on waivers.
News: Celtics G Tony Allen (flu) remained at the team hotel as the Celtics fell to Atlanta Friday. He is expected to return for Sunday's game at Toronto.
Analysis: The team is not going to be relying too much on Allen anymore now that they are back to full strength in the back court. He can be let go in most leagues where he was added as a short-term stopgap.
News: According to the Boston Globe, Celtics G Tony Allen (flu) remained at the team hotel as the Celtics take on Atlanta Friday. He is expected to return for Sunday's game at Toronto.
Analysis: The team is not going to be relying too much on Allen anymore now that they are back to full strength in the back court. He can be let go in most leagues where he was added as a short-term stopgap.
News: According to the team's official Web site, Tony Allen missed Friday's morning shootaround because he was sick. He is questionable for Friday night's game in Atlanta.
Analysis: Allen may or may not miss the game, but what is certain is that the team is not going to be relying on him much anymore now that they are back to full strength in the back court. He can be let go in most leagues where he was added as a short-term stopgap.
News: According to the Celtics' official Web site, Kevin Garnett (knee), Paul Pierce (knee), Rajon Rondo (hamstring) and Marquis Daniels (thumb) are all ruled out for Saturday's game against Toronto. The Celtics don't play again until Jan. 6 at Miami. In their absence, Ray Allen and Kendrick Perkins could see a big Fantasy boost as well as players like Tony Allen and Eddie House. They could be sleepers for Week 11 and have some sleeper appeal.
Analysis: Allen and Perkins may see the biggest boost in Fantasy production for as long as those players remain out. They make for excellent starts in all Fantasy leagues, but they are good plays under most circumstances anyway. The players who could be sleeper as short-term starters in deeper Fantasy leagues this week would be players like Tony Allen and Eddie House. Consider them off the waiver wire if they are available as stopgap measures.
News: Boston SG Tony Allen had a solid performance in a starting chance on Friday against the Magic. He went 6 for 11 from the field, scoring 16 points and adding four rebounds and an assist. He was in the starting lineup with Paul Pierce out with a right knee infection.
Analysis: Allen could be in for a nice boost in production with Pierce likely out for two weeks, but players like Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen will more likely pick up the slack from than Allen will. He remains just a low-end Fantasy option but could be a decent stopgap in deeper formats the next two weeks.
News: Boston's official team site is reporting that SG Tony Allen will play Tuesday against the Bucks for the first time this season. "I haven't had any pain in the last week or so," Allen said.
Analysis: Allen averaged 7.8 points last season, when he missed 34 of the last 47 regular season games with the ankle injury. He has minimal Fantasy value and should not be owned at this time.
News: Boston SG Tony Allen might make his season debut Dec. 8 against Milwaukee. He is recovering from offseason ankle surgery.
Analysis: Allen averaged 7.8 points last season, when he missed 34 of the last 47 regular season games with the ankle injury. He has minimal Fantasy value and should not be owned even when he does return.
News: Boston Celtics guard Tony Allen has had surgery on his right ankle and leg. The team says he's expected to recover from the surgery, performed Wednesday, in time for training camp this fall.
Analysis: Allen averaged 7.8 points last season, when he missed 34 of the last 47 regular season games with the ankle injury. He has minimal Fantasy value and should not be drafted in any leagues even when healthy.
News: Boston guard Tony Allen scored 18 points in his first start of the year for the Celtics at Philadelphia. He got the start with Ray Allen suspended. Allen was suspended one game without pay for elbowing Cleveland forward Anderson Varejao in the groin. Allen likely would have sat out the Sixers game anyway, and Celtics coach Doc Rivers said it was doubtful Allen or Paul Pierce would play in Wednesday's finale against Washington. That should open the door for Tony Allen to make another start.
Analysis: Allen has the chance to score for the Celtics with everyone sitting out. Still, Allen is too inconsistent to count on him at this time. Consider him a low-end Fantasy option.
News: The Boston Globe reports Celtics guard Ray Allen has been suspended one game without pay for elbowing Cleveland forward Anderson Varejao in the groin. The incident occurred with 5:05 remaining in the third quarter of the Celtics' 107-76 loss to the Cavaliers on Sunday. Allen will serve his suspension Tuesday night when the Celtics visit the 76ers. Tony Allen will likely start in Ray Allen's place.
Analysis: Tony Allen might start against the Sixers, but he has minimal Fantasy value and is not worth using in most leagues. He could have a good game with the increased minutes, but it's too hard to trust him as a reliable Fantasy option at this time.

Analysis: Even if Allen is able to return, the Celtics won't give him enough playing time to help your Fantasy team. Ignore Allen in all leagues at this time.

"Not Friday, but maybe the game after that," Allen said of his possible return for an April 8 home game against the Nets. "I feel good in practice. I'm encouraged. I've been doing everything I've been asked to do. I'm going to see a hand specialist (Monday) to see what I can and what I cannot do."

Analysis: There is still no concrete timetable for his return, but he does not appear to be quite close yet. Allen had minimal Fantasy value when healthy, so the safe bet is to leave him on the waiver wire in all leagues at this time.
News: Boston Celtics backup guard Tony Allen is expected to be sidelined for eight weeks after having thumb surgery on Wednesday. The operation repaired ligaments in the left thumb of the veteran of five NBA seasons, all with the Celtics. Allen was hurt during practice last week. News: The Boston Herald reports that Tony Allen didn't accompany the team to New Orleans Tuesday after injuring his left (non-shooting) thumb in practice, but contrary to a team report that X-rays taken on the thumb were negative, a Celtics source said that the guard has actually suffered torn ligaments. It was unclear how much time he would miss in the event of a ligaments tear.
Analysis: The report adds Allen plans to rejoin the team next Tuesday in Utah following the all-star break, when he is scheduled to meet with team physician Dr. Brian McKeon. Until then, he has been ordered to keep the thumb wrapped and stabilized. Allen is a role player off the team's bench and is not a recommended start in most Fantasy leagues anyway.

Analysis: Allen put up a lot of stats for a guy who got just 14 minutes. Still, he's not a big part of Boston's offense and doesn't often produce enough to be warranted of use in anything but the deepest of Fantasy leagues.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Tony Allen, who was questionable for Tuesday's game in Philadelphia with the flu, was able to take part in the team's shootaround and will play in the game Tuesday night.
Analysis: Allen has some low-end appeal for larger Fantasy leagues as a player who can occasionally score in double figures off the bench. However, he is not a recommended option.

News: Boston SG Tony Allen scored 13 points in 28 minutes in a win over Detroit on Thursday night. Allen was 6-of-7 from the floor and added six boards, three steals and two blocks.
Analysis: Allen sure looked like a low-end Rotisserie stud on Thursday. Guess what though? He's not. He can score 20 points or he can score zero points and it can come in back-to-back games. That kind of inconsistency makes him not worth owning in Fantasy right now.
News: Celtics SG Tony Allen scored 11 points in 17 minutes off the bench Tuesday in the season opener against the Cavaliers. He also had three rebounds and one assist.
Analysis: Allen was coming into his own as a rising star in December 2006, averaging 19 points in a 14-game span before he blew out his knee on a meaningless breakaway dunk and missed the rest of the season. He didn't do much off the bench last year, but he has the talent to make an impact this year. Consider him a sleeper in deeper leagues.
News: The Boston Celtics will play the Cleveland Cavaliers (Oct. 29), the Chicago Bulls (Oct. 31) and the Indiana Pacers (Nov. 1) in Week 1 (Oct. 27-Nov.2) of the Fantasy Basketball season. The defending champions get a tough matchup to start the season against a Cavaliers team that allowed just 96.7 points per game last season. But things get easier after that. The Bulls ranked 16th in the NBA (100.4 ppg) and the Pacers ranked 26th (105.4) and have don't have Jermaine O'Neal any more. Instead, Troy Murphy and Rasho Nesterovic man the low post.
Analysis: There are better options at center in Fantasy hoops than Kendrick Perkins, but the fact he'll get three games makes him worth considering as a No. 2. None of the bench players on the Celtics roster have any real Fantasy appeal this week. Leave them reserved until further notice.

Analysis: Allen was coming into his own as a rising star, averaging 19 points in a 14-game span for the otherwise woeful Celtics in December 2006 before he blew out his knee on a meaningless breakaway dunk and missing the rest of the season. He has shown signs of returning to that form, but his minutes have largely gone elsewhere. Don't look for a big year from him in Fantasy despite his big scoring numbers in the preseason.

Analysis: Allen, who played just 46 minutes in 12 playoff games this year, sustained a mild strain to his right Achilles' tendon while playing a game of 1-on-1 Tuesday, coach Doc Rivers said. He is averaging one point per game. In the first four games of the series, which Detroit and Boston split, Allen was scoreless while playing six minutes in three games. He won't see much playing time while Ray Allen remains a Celtic and for that reason is not a player that is worth drafting in most Fantasy leagues.

Still, the Celtics probably would like to have him come off their bench this season since he averaged 11.5 ppg and 3.8 rpg last season. With him likely to play less of a role on a more loaded roster this season, don't draft him in Fantasy.
News: Celtics SG Tony Allen was just 1-for-8 from the field in Monday's preseason win vs. Minnesota in England.

If they don't, he'll become a restricted free agent at season's end. He has the potential to produce solid all-around stats off the bench as a low-end Fantasy reserve, but isn't a player that should be sought out in most Fantasy drafts.
News: Celtics SG Tony Allen (knee) did play during Saturday's preseason game against the Raptors. He scored four points, grabbed one rebound and had one assist in 10 minutes. The Boston Herald recently reported that the Celtics have seen enough from Allen to believe he'll recover well from left knee reconstruction surgery -- so much so that they've begun to consider extending his contract. "Im very satisfied with what Im seeing so far with Tony," said Celtics GM Danny Ainge. "Hes worked extremely hard and is playing really well. I dont think hes 100 percent, and hell tell you hes not 100 percent yet, but Im very satisfied with how hes playing."
Analysis: The Celtics have until the end of the month to agree to terms with Allen. If they don't, he'll become a restricted free agent at season's end. Obviously, their signing him to a long-term deal before even seeing him play a regular-season game would signal just how confidently they believe he's recovered. Fantasy owners should monitor this situation and mirror the Celtics response. If the Celtics appear more and more willing to promise Allen money over the long haul, Fantasy owners should consider him healthy and target him as a super-sleeper. If healthy, he has the potential to produce solid all-around stats off the bench as a low-end Fantasy reserve.

Analysis: The 6-foot-4, 213-pounder averaged 11.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.48 steals in 33 games last season. By some standards, you could say Allen enjoyed somewhat of a breakout season. But injuries and off-the-court troubles severely limited his Fantasy value last season. Consider him a super-sleeper in Fantasy drafts, provided he enters camp healthy as expected and rid of non-basketball related problems. He should be able to do both.

Analysis: Allen, who has spent the last three seasons with the Celtics, is recovering from two torn ligaments in his left knee sustained when he landed awkwardly after an uncontested dunk in the final minutes of a 97-84 loss to Indiana on Jan. 10. Allen, the 25th pick in the 2004 draft out of Oklahoma State, grew up in Chicago. He was having his best season when he was hurt and finished with a scoring average of 11.5 points in 33 games. He should be fully recovered for the start of next season.

Analysis: Allen could undergo surgery as early as this weekend. It will take at least six months for him to recover from the injury. Head coach Doc Rivers, though, said, "It will be probably longer." Allen had been a terrific pick up since Paul Pierce had gone down with an injury. He can now safely be dropped from all Fantasy leagues.
News: Tony Allen scored 19 points for Boston on Wednesday against the Pacers before leaving with an injured left knee with 3:01 remaining in the third quarter. A few moments after Stephen Jackson was called for a foul, Allen went up for a free dunk and landed awkwardly, writhing in pain for several minutes until his teammates carried him off the court. Allen was taken to New England Baptist Hospital for an MRI.
Analysis: The Celtics were already without Paul Pierce, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West, now it appears they could lose Allen for an extended period of time. He was in a lot of pain on Wednesday and the Celtics are hoping the MRI comes back negative. Allen has been an excellent replacement for Pierce. He has scored in double-figures in 14 straight games, including Wednesday. Allen's days as a useful stopgap Fantasy option could be up. Keep him reserved in all formats until he is cleared to return to action.
News: Tony Allen led the Celtics with 21 points and a season-high nine rebounds on Sunday against the Magic.
Analysis: Allen has quietly scored in double-figures in 13 straight games. Allen has played well in Paul Pierce's absence and continues to be a solid stopgap Fantasy option. When Pierce returns to action, expect to see a decline in production from Allen.
News: Boston guard Tony Allen led the Celtics against Portland, making nine-of-13 shots on the way to 22 points.
Analysis: Allen has played well in Paul Pierce's absence and is worth picking up and using in Fantasy leagues. When Pierce returns to action, expect to see a decline in production from Allen.
News: Celtics G Tony Allen took and made just one shot from the floor, but he had 13 points Wednesday because of his 11-for-13 free throw shooting. He also had seven rebounds and five assists.
Analysis: Allen has been hot as of late, scoring in double-figures in seven straight games. He has been a solid scoring option for the Celtics since they have been hit with the injury bug. He is a pretty solid stopgap Fantasy option, but when Paul Pierce returns to action, expect to see a decline in production from Allen.
News: According to the Boston Globe, Paul Pierce was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his left foot on Thursday morning and is expected to miss at least the next two weeks. "It has been bothering me the past week and I just couldn't deal with it any more," Pierce said. "I need to stay off it for a couple weeks and see how it feels. There is pretty much no treatment for it, so I just have to rest and see what happens."
Analysis: First, the Celtics lose out on the Allen Iverson sweepstakes and now they will be without their top performer for the next two weeks. Fantasy owners will have to reserve Pierce immediately and wait for a more concrete timetable for his return. In the meantime, expect the Celtics to spread the wealth around. No one player will be able to account for the loss of Pierce's 26.6 ppg, but Tony Allen should be able to continue his recent success even once Wally Szczerbiak (ankle) is able to return.
News: Tony Allen finally has a trial date on his aggravated battery charges in Chicago. He is scheduled to be tried next April 23rd for charges that arose out of an altercation at a restaurant in August of 2005.
Analysis: The Celtics' regular season will end on April 18th, and if the club makes it into the playoffs, Allen will be allowed to seek a continuance. As far as his Fantasy value, he's now starting in place of Wally Szczerbiak. The move may be temporary, but it makes him a viable Fantasy option in leagues of 12-plus teams at the moment.
News: Celtics G Tony Allen had 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists against the Suns on Friday.
Analysis: Allen has now had two solid games in place of the injured Wally Szczerbiak, who is expected back on Monday. Allen is not a recommended Fantasy option until he becomes a scoring option with Szczerbiak in the lineup.
News: According to the Boston Globe, Wally Szczerbiak (sprained left ankle) will not play in Monday night's game at Chicago. Head coach Doc Rivers said he was leaning toward starting Delonte West in place of Szczerbiak, though he mentioned Tony Allen was also a possibility.
Analysis: The Celtics play four games this week, but we don't recommend either player outside of the deepest of leagues this week.
News: Celtics G Tony Allen scored seven points off the bench on Friday against the Raptors.
Analysis: Allen should not be on Fantasy rosters at this time.
News: Tony Allen played the final quarter Friday after a DNP Monday and being the last player off the bench Wednesday.
Analysis: He was needed because of a body shortage, but he's still fallen on the depth chart. Ignore him in Fantasy leagues.
News: The Celtics officially picked up their option on the 2007-08 season for Tony Allen. He was the last of the third-year Celtics to get the option year secured.
Analysis: Tony Allen will have a reduced role on the bench this season. Don't look at what he did near the end of last season as a barometer of what he can do.
News: The Boston Celtics exercised a team option on guard Tony Allen on Thursday and also waived forwards Brian Grant and Luke Jackson.
Analysis: The 6-foot-4 Allen, the team's third choice in the first round of the 2004 draft, 25th overall, appeared in 51 games and averaged 7.2 points last season. The team did not disclose terms of the deal. He has minimal Fantasy appeal in his reduced role off the bench.
News: The Celtics have still not picked up the option for next year on Tony Allen, but the club expects to do so. The Celts were waiting in hopes that Allen's aggravated battery charges in Chicago would be resolved before they made a final decision, but, unless the charges are dropped, the team won't know before the October 31 deadline.
Analysis: Allen is one of a nice group of young Celtics that are ready to take on the Atlantic Division, with Delonte West, Ryan Gomes, Sebastien Telfair and Al Jefferson. Allen will need to score more to help you in Fantasy land, but watch his progress now that he has a healthy knee. Off the court issues have made him fall out of favor a bit in Boston.
News: Celtics head coach Doc Rivers says he has a rotation in mind, starting the season with Sebastian Telfair (PG), Paul Pierce (SG), Wally Szczerbiak (SF), Ryan Gomes (PF) and Kendrick Perkins (C). That leaves G Delonte West, G Rajon Rondo, G Tony Allen, swingman Gerald Green, F Al Jefferson, F Brian Scalabrine and C Theo Ratliff to come off the bench.
Analysis: Based on his history, it's likely Rivers will change his mind a few times along the way -- particularly with such a young team. The Celts would like Jefferson to step up and command more playing time. Rondo and West will be important to the running game, while Allen played well at the end of last season and is one of the club's better defenders. Ratliff's health has the Celts thinking about keeping Michael Olowokandi. Green is a potential sleeper, but he'll have to earn his minutes off the pine. Aside from lightly-used Brian Scalabrine, we expect each of these players to have some measure of Fantasy value during the course of the year. Make sure to monitor the Celts for waiver-wire acquisitions all season.
News: Wally Szczerbiak led the Celtics in Friday's preseason game vs. Cleveland with 21 points, 13 in the first quarter. He finished 7-of-8 from the field with two 3-pointers and was 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Sebastian Telfair added 16 points for Boston, including a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line. Ryan Gomes had 12 points and three steals.
Analysis: Celtics star Paul Pierce finished with two points, leaving the game with 7 minutes to play in the third quarter with a bruised left hip. The crown jewel, in Fantasy terms, is expected to be just fine to start the season. Szczerbiak should average around 20 ppg this season and should be considered a must-start in any format entering the season. Ryan Gomes is one of our favorite sleeper picks of the season and Celtics have several young players worth taking fliers on in the late rounds. Continue to monitor them during the preseason.
News: The Boston Globe reports that Tony Allen was able to dunk forcefully and hang onto the rim long enough to earn a technical foul during a scrimmage last week. That's a far cry from the player we saw last year, who was hesitant to dunk due to lingering pain and weakness in his surgically repaired right knee. ''I feel alright,'' said Allen. ''I need more improvement, more strength. Then, I'll be able to have a swagger. Right now, I don't have my swagger back. I've just got to get stronger. It's slowly but surely coming back. I'm not a psychic, but, when it comes, you're going to know about it. When it gets to 100 percent, you're going to know about it.''
News: The Celtics are concerned about Tony Allen's status now that his trial on aggravated battery charges has been postponed.
Analysis: The club had hoped the matter would be resolved before training camp, but now it's possible the matter could drag on. The delay was caused when the judge in the case became ill. Allen is not a player Fantasy owners should be concerned with at this stage.
News: Going into training camp, which starts Tuesday, the top 10 players in the Celtics' rotation appear to be forwards Paul Pierce, Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes and Gerald Green; guards Delonte West, Sebastian Telfair, Wally Szczerbiak and Tony Allen and centers Kendrick Perkins and Theo Ratliff. Rookie draft picks Rajon Rondo and Leon Powe could broaden that group. "Doc [Rivers] has some work cut out for him" in settling on a roster and rotation, general manager Danny Ainge said. "There's going to be some worthy players of playing time that aren't going to get playing time this year. ... I'm excited that we have those choices."
Analysis: With all that youth, the Celtics have plenty of trade material and Ainge said he always looks for ways to improve the team. Expectations should be higher for a team that is still young but has eight of its top 10 players entering their third NBA season. Fantasywise, the stud of the group continues to be Pierce. He warrants a first-round pick in any format. Down the line, Szczerbiak will serve as a nice No. 2 or 3 guard depending on the size of your league, Gomes has massive sleeper potential and Telfair should flourish at the point although it could take some time. Up front, Perkins and Ratliff should be targets in the later rounds. The Celtics may or may not make a playoff push this season, but they are full of good values for Fantasy owners on Draft Day.
News: Boston Celtics forward Wally Szczerbiak will miss the final seven games of the season because of a knee injury that requires surgery. He had an MRI on his left knee Thursday at a hospital, team spokesman Jeff Twiss said. After consulting with the team physician and Celtics officials, Szczerbiak will have arthroscopic surgery early next week.
Analysis: The Celtics expect him to return next season. He averaged 17.5 points in 32 games with the Celtics after being acquired from Minnesota on Jan. 26. Expect rookie Orien Greene to see a boost in playing time. He's worth adding in larger leagues if you need a replacement for Wally, but don't expect regular production from the young guard. Tony Allen has scored in double-figures in four straight games and he should see a boost.

Analysis: He won't start once Wally Szczerbiak gets adjusted to his new team.
News: According to the Boston Globe, when Tony Allen's surgically repaired right knee stiffens up, coach Doc Rivers isn't going to do any messing around. "If it's bothering him at all, I'm not going to wait. I'm going to take him out right away," coach Doc Rivers said. "Just look over and say you want to come out and we'll just shut you down [for the game]."
Analysis: He has played 14 and 17 minutes his last two games and has very minimal Fantasy value.

Analysis: Allen was dressed for Monday night's game against Golden State, but he is yet to see action this year. He went through hard workouts Monday and Tuesday, which might have set him back again.
News: The Boston Globe reports Allen had surgery to repair a torn right knee ligament on Sept. 13 and his recovery time is expected to be seven to eight weeks.

Analysis: Rivers is eager to get Allen back so he can move Davis back to the second unit, which, as of now, is bereft of a legit scoring threat. "I want to get [Allen back] to get our team right, our rotations right, and unfortunately, right now, we're running out of time," Rivers said. "While we're trying to get it right, we have to win. We don't have enough time."
News: The Boston Globe reports Tony Allen (sprained right ankle) missed his fourth straight game on Sunday against the T-Wolves. "I'm at about 70 percent," he said after the game. "I've got to prove it to Doc [Rivers] that I still have it." He said he hopes to play Wednesday against Atlanta.

"i don't think (he'll play) Friday, but I don't know that," coach Doc Rivers said. "He's yet to run even, so I don't know. I think him playing probably didn't do any good things to that ankle. It probably set him back a little further. He was probably playing on adrenaline. Obviously nobody can know that."...
Analysis: Tony Allen missed his second straight game with the sprained right ankle he suffered in the first quarter of Friday's win at Utah. Ricky Davis will likely get another start at the shooting guard position if Allen is unable to suit up.
