Week 1 Fantasy Stockwatch

By | Fantasy Writer

Welcome to a recession-free zone. It's always a bull market when it comes to Fantasy Basketball, whether or not any Bulls are hot on the market remains to be seen, however. This is the Fantasy Stockwatch, post-preseason edition, looking for the biggest winners and losers in the games before the games that really count.

Unlike the recent state of the Dow, where even the major players like Apple and Google had reports in the doldrums, this Stockwatch is experiencing calm waters, so we won't be mentioning players like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant in this space. If you didn't know James was worth the money, they've got a comfortable spot for you in last place of your league.

Instead, we'll be monitoring those second-tier players that under certain circumstances have been performing well above, and well below, their expectations. These are the guys that might still be available off the waiver wire in some leagues, not the first few picks of your draft.

Derrick Rose, PG, Chicago
We knew the Bulls already had established guards in Larry Hughes, Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich when they drafted the Memphis product No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft, but for some reason, the Bulls weren't planning on starting their new star right away. Well, with Hughes out for at least the season's first month, Rose moves right on into the starting lineup next to Hinrich. The Bulls play three games the first week and Rose has lit up the preseason averaging 13.9 points -- second on the team -- and five assists per game in 28 minutes per night. Rose is still relatively unknown in Fantasy circles and is well worth a start in the first week of the season as he vies to become the Rookie of the Year.
DeMarcus Nelson, SG, Golden State
The former Duke leader is one of the more unlikely rookies to have a significant impact in Fantasy, but that is what injuries can do to teams. The Warriors, who lost Baron Davis to the Clippers in the offseason, were planning on starting C.J. Watson at point guard. Watson is now out at least a month with a torn ligament in his elbow and the Warriors will replace him in the starting lineup with Nelson with Marcus Williams as the backup. Nelson averaged 21.5 minutes per game during the preseason and produced 9.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists in six games. Nelson's upside isn't in the clouds, but with the keys to a very high-powered offense, he'll be well worth a look in deeper leagues.
T.J. Ford, PG, Indiana
This guy was once an absolute wizard with the basketball but injuries have decimated the early stages of his career. Starting anew with the Pacers after two tumultuous years in Toronto, the 25-year-old Ford is ready to anoint himself as one of the league's best point guards. Ford was getting picked in the deeper middle rounds of Fantasy drafts, but after leading Indiana in several categories in the preseason it looks like he'll be well worth starting in all leagues. Ford averaged 15.1 points, 4.8 assists, 1.5 steals, 3.8 rebounds and almost one three pointer per game over eight preseason contests and his numbers should only improve when the regular season begins.
Andrew Bynum, C, L.A. Lakers
Coming out of high school, expectations were high for this 7-footer, who only turns 21 the day before the Lakers play their first game of the season on national television against Greg Oden and Portland. Oden might be the story, but Bynum will get the better of that matchup. Bynum is on the Stockwatch now, but by midseason he should be in the category of superstars that don't even need mentioning and should be started at all times in Fantasy. Just check out his stat line from Friday's preseason game against Oklahoma City. He scored 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting with eight rebounds and three blocks in 29 minutes. In fact, he's dominated the preseason for the Lakers and should be a rebounding, blocked shot and scoring machine for L.A. this season. He's ready for a breakout and his stock is way, way up right now.
Matt Barnes, SF, Phoenix
A terrific rebounder for a small forward, Barnes gets a nod here because he was officially named the Suns starter at the position after a solid preseason. Barnes is one of those Rotisserie-type players who can help your Fantasy team in many different categories. During the preseason he's averaged 12.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.3 steals and a three pointer in seven games. As a permanent member of the starting lineup, Barnes can only expect those numbers to go up. If you are still drafting, you might have to grab him before the latest rounds since he's not exactly a sleeper anymore, but Barnes will be well worth it as a starter for the new-look Suns in 2008-09.
Marvin Williams, SF, Atlanta
Williams is here for a number of reasons as the regular season begins. For starters, he's suspended for the first game of the year against Orlando on Oct. 29 and the Hawks only play one more game in the week. That alone would make the usual No. 2 Fantasy forward a poor start but Williams has disappointed over five preseason games as well. Williams averaged 10.2 points, 3.6 boards, 2.0 assists, .80 steals and a below .500 shooting percentage over 26 minutes per game. The former Tar Heel might have more upside than actual Fantasy worth as he's yet to live up to his vast potential after three NBA seasons and should definitely be avoided during the season's opening week.
Chauncey Billups, PG, Detroit
The biggest deterrent to another year of solid point guard play from Billups will be sitting on the bench when the Detroit opens the season Wednesday against Indiana. If anything should happen to Billups, Rodney Stuckey is waiting in the wings and will certainly take minutes away from the grizzled veteran this season. The Pistons were even highly considering trading Billups this offseason to pave the way for Stuckey to rise into the starting lineup. That didn't happen, obviously, but it shows that Detroit feels it would not miss a beat with the second year man out of Eastern Washington. To make matters worse, Billups averaged just 8.9 points per game in the preseason and Stuckey dropped a team-leading 12. Billups is still a worthy starting Fantasy option, but will start the year lower than he has in some time.
Lamar Odom, PF, L.A. Lakers
Although most feel that Odom's foray into sixth-man land could help the former Rhode Island Ram, since he'll no longer be the third option on the front line but the top option on the back line, the bottom line is that his stats will take a hit. You want proof? Odom averaged 20 minutes per game while coming off the bench for most of the preseason and his numbers don't look like the Odom of old. He averaged just 5.5 points and 4.8 rebounds and was actually a team leader in turnovers. Obviously the preseason isn't a great indication of what happens when the real games begin, but it was a decent look at what will happen with lesser minutes coming off the bench.
Jamario Moon, SF, Toronto
Moon made a name for himself last year -- because who wouldn't giggle reading his name -- when he became a producer with the Raptors. He was in and out of the starting lineup and gave your Fantasy team a nice boost off the waiver wire if you were lucky enough to pick him up during a hot streak. Well, call it a lunar eclipse but Moon's stock is way down this season. He put up poor numbers in the preseason, never figured to see as much playing time because of Jermaine O'Neal's addition to the starting lineup and is now suffering from an Achilles' injury that he expects to play through. He's not recommended without an injury so a nagging heel is certainly going to slow down his already low totals.
Grant Hill, SF, Phoenix
The Suns are already limited in their Fantasy potential in relation to last year's team with Mike D'Antoni at the helm since they don't figure to run and score nearly as much. Hill gets knocked down here because Phoenix has decided to start Matt Barnes over the one-time NBA superstar whose career has been decimated by injuries. Hill will still be useful in the larger Fantasy leagues, but gone are the days when he'll really be a benefit to draft. The Suns have decided to go with Barnes, who out-played Hill in the preseason in all aspects of the game.

Derrick Rose
Back still a thorn for Rose
Derrick Rose, PG, CHI
12:45 PM
News: Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said G Derrick Rose (back) will not play in Tuesday's game against Sacramento, the Chicago Tribune reports. Rose, who has been dealing with lower back spasms, did not participate in the team's morning shootaround and will miss his third consecutive game. The 23-year-old was also sidelined for five outings with turf tie earlier this season, but he is still averaging 22.0 points per game. "Each day he's feeling better but it's still not where we want it to be," Thibodeau said of Rose's sore back. "We're going to be patient."
Analysis: Rose was examined Monday by a specialist, and Bulls general manager Gar Forman said no structural damage was found. That’s good news for the Eastern Conference-leading Bulls, but Rose remains day to day with the persistent back issue. Rose, the league's reigning MVP, will attempt to return for Thursday's game against Boston. "It's not just his decision," Thibodeau said. "There are a lot of people weighing in on it. We have a great medical staff, a great training staff." Fantasy owners should monitor his progress and consider him a must-start when active.

Eric Gordon
Gordon (knee) on the mend
Eric Gordon, SG, NO
12:35 PM
News: New Orleans G Eric Gordon had successful arthroscopic surgery on his ailing right knee, the team announced Tuesday. As expected, he will be sidelined for six weeks. Gordon sustained the injury during the first quarter of the Hornets' season-opener, but still managed 39 minutes. However, he missed the next four games before returning and logging another 39 minutes against Philadelphia -- his only two outings of the year.
Analysis: Gordon's first season with the Hornets has certainly been one to forget. Gordon, the key return in the Chris Paul deal with the Clippers, might not return to the court until April -- if at all this season. The 23-year-old netted a combined 42 points in his only two games and proved he remains a strong scorer, when he's healthy. Fantasy owners should keep him reserved in most formats, but consider cutting him if you need roster space.

Brandon Bass
Bass back after All-Star break?
Brandon Bass, PF, BOS
3:53 PM
News: Celtics F Brandon Bass admitted Tuesday he might not return to the lineup until after the All-Star break because of a knee injury, according to the Boston Herald. The team said Sunday that Bass was expected to miss two weeks of playing time. "Yeah, something like that," Bass told reporters about a likely return post-All Star break. "But a 10 to 14-day rest is perfect, because it allows me to do what I need to do."
Analysis: Bass was attempting to play through the knee injury that originally occurred Jan. 26 during a game at Orlando. He missed one game because of the issue (Feb. 5) before returning to play the next three and likely rushed himself back too soon. "I just wanted to play," Bass said. "I felt that I could keep going, but my knee kept getting weaker and weaker." Fantasy owners should continue to reserve Bass in all formats while he's sidelined.

 Nene
Calf injury sidelines Nene
Nene, C, DEN
2:56 PM
News: Nuggets C Nene was ruled out for Tuesday's game against Phoenix and is expected to also miss Wednesday's contest at Dallas with a troublesome calf injury. "How long Nene will be out? I don't know," coach George Karl told the Denver Post on Monday. "He'll probably miss Tuesday's game, maybe a few more. ... I haven't heard the specifics, just someone whispering to me that it might be four or five days."
Analysis: Four or five days from Monday puts the next possible game Nene could suit up for as Friday at Memphis. However, that is not a guaranteed return date for the Nuggets' starting center, who has also dealt with a heel injury this season. Nene has missed five games this season, but is productive when active and is averaging 13.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Keep him reserved in all Fantasy formats until further notice.

Kyrie Irving
Irving awaiting final clearance
Kyrie Irving, PG, CLE
2:40 PM
News: Cavaliers G Kyrie Irving (concussion) was a full participant in practice Tuesday and is hoping to receive clearance from the team's medical staff to play in Wednesday's game against Indiana, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Irving has missed the past two games after being diagnosed with a concussion last Wednesday. Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said Irving would start and play his normal minutes if cleared.
Analysis: Irving completed two days of light workouts prior to Tuesday's practice and appears poised for a return on Wednesday. The Pacers matchup is the first of only three games for Cleveland during Fantasy Week 8 (Feb. 13-19). Irving leads all rookies with 18.0 points per game this season and is also averaging 5.1 assists through 23 games. With his return approaching, he should be viewed as a low-end No. 2 Fantasy G in most formats.

D.J. Augustin
Augustin may start Wednesday
D.J. Augustin, PG, CHA
2:31 PM
News: Bobcats coach Paul Silas said G D.J. Augustin (toe) could start Wednesday at Minnesota after his positive showing in practice, the Charlotte Observer reports. Augustin, who is averaging 13.6 points per game this season, returned to practice Tuesday after missing the team's past 11 games with a toe injury. G Kemba Walker, who has been starting in Augustin's place at point guard, would play off the bench when he returns.
Analysis: Augustin was hoping to play Monday against Philadelphia, but it now appears he will return at some point this week -- possibly even Wednesday. The 24-year-old has said he's felt less pain in his foot, however, he won't take any chances re-aggravating the issue. The Bobcats play three more times in Fantasy Week 8 (Feb. 13-19) so Fantasy owners should monitor Augustin's status to determine when he will take the court.

Kevin Garnett
Garnett can't shake hip issue
Kevin Garnett, PF, BOS
2:26 PM
News: Celtics F Kevin Garnett is considered doubtful for Wednesday's game against Detroit due to a hip flexor, according to the Boston Globe. Garnett apparently tweaked his hip during Sunday's victory over Chicago and was unable to participate in practice on Tuesday. "It’s nothing bad with Kevin, but (trainer Eddie Lacerte) suggested two days off, and then he said today maybe even three days off," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.
Analysis: Garnett's injury comes at a tough time for the veteran forward as he had started to improve his scoring production. He has averaged 17.6 points per game over his past five outings and also registered 20-plus points in back-to-back outings during the span, the first time he has accomplished that feat this season. Plus, he was posting 9.6 rebounds a night. Fantasy owners should monitor his status as he could miss some playing time.

Omri Casspi
Coach seeking more from Casspi
Omri Casspi, SF, CLE
3:29 PM
News: Cleveland F Omri Casspi is mired in one of the longest scoring droughts of the season and is averaging just 7.3 points per game during the month of February. Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said he has pinpointed the area where Casspi needs to improve. "He has to run the floor better, run the floor harder," Scott told The News-Herald. "(He has to) get in there and fight, rebound the ball, and quit thinking about scoring so much."
Analysis: Scott seems frustrated by Casspi's lack of production, especially since he has started every game this season. However, he has topped double figures in points only once over his past nine outings to drop his season average to 7.8 ppg. He is only averaging 22.4 minutes a night and the Cavaliers don't have many options behind him so benching him would not be optimal. Consider Casspi a low-end Fantasy option in most formats.

Jason Smith
Smith not traveling with team
Jason Smith, PF, NO
3:10 PM
News: New Orleans F Jason Smith (concussion) did not accompany the Hornets for the start of their six-game road trip, according to the team's official website. Smith is still dealing with concussion-like symptoms and has already missed the past four games. There is no timetable for his return.
Analysis: It's extremely likely Smith will be sidelined until Feb. 29 when New Orleans returns home to face Toronto -- at least. The 25-year-old is facing a long stretch before he is cleared to return to game action as the Hornets are being cautious with his head injury. Smith is averaging 8.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game this season. Fantasy owners should continue to reserve him only in deeper formats at this point.

Kyrylo Fesenko
Fesenko generating interest
Kyrylo Fesenko, C, UTA
3:03 PM
News: In desperate need of a backup center, the Milwaukee Bucks have expressed interest in free-agent C Kyrylo Fesenko, according to reports. Fesenko has played the past four seasons with Utah. "We've had discussions about bringing him in and working him out," Bucks general manager John Hammond said Monday. Milwaukee has also displayed interest in C Joel Przybilla, who is also an unrestricted free agent.
Analysis: Fesenko was expected to sign with Golden State during the offseason, but his knee injury seemed to shy away potential suitors. He appeared in 53 games for the Jazz last season and averaged less than three points and three rebounds per outing. The 7-foot-1 center is reportedly not close to a deal and would not have much Fantasy value with the Bucks. Fantasy owners should continue to ignore him in all formats for now.
