Stockwatch: Oden is what he is

By | Fantasy Writer

The Houston Rockets have a stacked offense. With Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, the addition of Ron Artest and Luis Scola, there simply was no room for Rafer Alston to do anything but pass. Because of that, Alston saw his scoring average dip from 13 points per game last year to just over 10 this season. His assists have been down, too. Go figure.

Injuries have a way of changing the makeup of NBA lineups and for Houston, with T-Mac now out for at least the next three weeks, they're just happy to have a guy like Alston who can pick up the slack.

And pick up the slack he has.

Rafer Alston, PG, Houston
The man who used to be called "Skip To My Lou" in his AND1 mix tape days has been bringing his showboat game -- and often times attitude -- to the Rockets for four years now but was expected to have his smallest role on this year's team with the new additions. He's still averaging just over 10 points per game, his lowest numbers since coming to the Rockets, but has assumed a scorer's role once again with McGrady out of the lineup for three weeks. Alston has averaged over 18 points per game over his last three hitting 11 threes over that span. He's even slightly increased his assist numbers with T-Mac out. Alston is still available in 20 percent of CBSSports.com Fantasy leagues and should be picked up now in all leagues until McGrady comes back.
Greg Oden, C, Portland
Entering Week 7 of the NBA season, we finally have a decent read on what Oden's rookie season in the NBA will be like. And it only took two years. The bad news, however, is that Oden will likely not finish in the top three in NBA Rookie of the Year voting. He was far and away the most highly sought after rookie in Fantasy drafts before the season, but Oden is completely healthy now and it just seems he won't have the immediate impact most expected. Sure, he'll give you the occasional double-double but he'll also come out the next night and play 18 minutes and score two points with five boards. The Trail Blazers can afford to bring him along slowly since their offense has been top-notch even without the big man. Oden is averaging 7.8 points and 9.0 rebounds over his last four games and that is what you can expect out of him for now. That's still worth owning in all Fantasy leagues, but you might not use him if you have two solid centers.
Jose Juan Barea, PG, Dallas
You have to be careful with a situation like Barea's in Dallas. Yes, his stock is definitely way up after scoring 15, 18 and 22 points in three straight games. But Barea is seeing an increase in minutes because Josh Howard has been out. Howard expects to be back any day now and that could immediately send Barea back to Fantasy irrelevance. However, he has done such a great job in Howard's absence, he's definitely going to get more playing time than before. "The thing I like about Barea is his decision-making has continued to improve since training camp," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said after Saturday's game. "He made a lot of good things happen." Even if his value won't be as high as his production over the last few games, his stock is still far higher than it was a few weeks ago.
Mike Miller, SG, Minnesota
Miller's knee is really bothering him. He's averaged just nine points and five boards over his last three games and has since sat out the last two contests for the Timberwolves. He wanted to return for Saturday's game but was held out of the lineup and has said that even if he returns over the next scoring period, it will be at less than 100 percent health. Miller will likely be active but won't be nearly the same player until that knee fully heals. Until he can sustain health and production for a few games straight, he's a risky play in Fantasy and should be overlooked for other options.
Marcus Camby, C, L.A. Clippers
Camby's production isn't going anywhere this season. He's as valuable in Fantasy as ever. In fact, over the last week of action, Camby has been the top Fantasy center in basketball. Chris Kaman may be out and the Clippers may have added Zach Randolph, but neither is going to stop Camby from doing what he does game in and game out. He's a double-double machine with five in his last six games. Over that span he's averaging over 12 points and 13 rebounds per game and adding an incredible four blocks to boot. Many Fantasy owners have felt that Camby wouldn't be the same player that he was in Denver, but in fact, Camby has been every bit as good.
Samuel Dalembert, C, Philadelphia
Dalembert is exactly what is wrong with Philadelphia thus far this season. He is the prime example of how the franchise has only subtracted with the addition of Elton Brand. Almost every player on the Sixers have taken a step back thus far but Dalembert, who averaged over 10 points per game and about nine rebounds over his last two seasons, has taken the greatest plunge. Dalembert has failed to score in three of his last six games and has added just 4.2 boards per over those contests. The Sixers have begun to limit his minutes because of his poor play and right now he doesn't even look worthy of being owned in Fantasy, let alone being the low-end No. 1 center many figured he'd be to start the season.
Andre Iguodala, SF, Philadelphia
Almost the entire Sixers team has seen their stock plummet this season and for much of the early going, Iguodala was one of them. That will happen when you average 20 points per game last season and struggle to achieve even half that number this year. But with the rest of the Sixers still wallowing in mediocrity, Iggy has finally started to pick up the pace. Over his last four games, Iguodala has almost 20 points and is adding over eight rebounds, almost five assists and a block. He's still a Rotisserie stud and is now scoring like the man Fantasy owners expected when they drafted him with a top pick. His scoring average should only continue to rise as the Sixers desperately need his production.
Mo Williams, PG, Cleveland
We very easily could have listed Daniel Gibson as a stock up here because he's the reason Williams' numbers have taken a hit recently. Well, part of it is Williams' poor play as well. Cleveland's starting point guard is still averaging over 15 points per game this season, but that number has dropped to under 13 over his last four contests. Plus, he hasn't played over 30 minutes in his last three contests with Gibson getting more time on the court. The fact that he already was doing little in the way of assists and rebounds only compounds his down arrow. We expect him to bounce back, but right now, Gibson is making a case to take over his starting spot in the lineup.
Rajon Rondo, PG, Boston
Rondo came into this season with a decent amount of hype after helping lead the Celtics to an NBA title and averaging over 10 points and five assists per game last year. Right now, however, he's playing like a must-start guard in all leagues and is officially one of the league's best all-around point guards. Two games ago, Rondo recorded his first-ever -- but definitely not his last -- triple-double with 16 points, 13 boards and 17 assists. He's averaging 16 points, over eight rebounds and 12 assists over his last three games and is getting a good number of steals and shooting well over 50 percent. Rondo should be starting in all Fantasy leagues on most occasions and it figures to stay that way for the former Kentucky Wildcat.
Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, SF, Milwaukee
The Bucks are thanking their stars they finally have Michael Redd back in the starting lineup. Mbah a Moute Fantasy owners, however, are cursing under their breath. Since Redd's return, the UCLA rookie has taken a steep decline since starting off the year so hot. He's averaging under four points per game over his last five contests and his minutes continue to dwindle culminating in just four against the Bobcats on Friday night. He's young and talented and surely can find more minutes as the season wears on, but for right now, it looks like the Bucks are content to shy away from the rookie and you probably should too.

Kevin Garnett
Garnett upgraded to probable
Kevin Garnett, PF, BOS
11:41 AM
News: CSNNE.com reports Celtics forward Kevin Garnett (hip) went through Wednesday's shootaround and has been upgraded to probable for Wednesday's game against the Pistons.
Analysis: Garnett wasn't able to practice Tuesday, but it seems whatever treatment he received is working. He could always be a late scratch, but it does appear he is on track to play Wednesday. Garnett's scoring and rebounding are down a bit in 2011-12, but he has a double-double in two of his last three games and is still productive for the most part. He might not be the must-start option he once was, but Garnett remains a viable Fantasy play in all formats.

Kyrie Irving
Irving cleared to play for Cavs
Kyrie Irving, PG, CLE
11:12 AM
News: The Cavs received some good news prior to their game Wednesday against the Pacers. Rookie guard Kyrie Irving has been cleared to return after missing three games with a concussion. He is in the lineup for Wednesday's game.
Analysis: Most Fantasy owners decided to take Irving out of their lineup for Week 8 (Feb. 13-19) not knowing if he would return to action. But for those Fantasy owners in weekly formats that took the gamble, then it seems it will pay off. Irving is a viable Fantasy start when healthy, so start putting him back into active lineups.

LaMarcus Aldridge
Aldridge won't travel to Golden State
LaMarcus Aldridge, PF, POR
1:19 AM
News: Portland F LaMarcus Aldridge will not travel with the team to Golden State, putting his status for Wednesday's contest against the Warriors in serious doubt, reports the Oregonian. Aldridge sprained his left ankle in the first quarter of Tuesday night's contest against the Wizards after stepping on Trevor Booker's foot . He immediately hobbled off the floor and was unable to return in the 124-109 loss.
Analysis: Aldridge is officially being considered day to day with his injury, although he still could end up missing some time. With he Trail Blazers playing in their first of three games over three consecutive nights on Tuesday, Aldridge isn't going to have much time to rest his ankle. Owners should keep an eye on his status moving forward, but since he won't be traveling with the team on Wednesday, it appears he will at least miss one contest. Keep an eye on his status moving forward. Aldridge can be considered a must-start option in all formats, when healthy.

Nick Young
Young goes off for Wizards
Nick Young, SG, WAS
1:02 AM
News: Washington guard Nick Young scored season-high 35 points on Tuesday night against Portland. He shot 12 for 17 from the floor, knocking down seven 3-pointers, and connecting on all four of his foul shots. Young added three boards and two steals in his 40 minutes of action. His efforts helped the Wizards beat the Trail Blazers, 124-109.
Analysis: Young has been hitting on all cylinders lately -- despite having one lackluster game in the past week. Over his last five outings, Young is averaging 23.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. He's hitting 46.9 percent of his attempts from beyond the 3-point arc over that stretch as well. Even though he's scoring at a good clip, Young doesn't contribute in all categories, which makes him more of a No. 4 Fantasy guard option -- one that can score a ton.

Danny Granger
Report: Granger ruled out
Danny Granger, SF, IND
11:18 AM
News: FOX Sports Ohio reports a Pacers source said forward Danny Granger has been ruled out for Wednesday's game against the Cavs because he sprained his right ankle Tuesday. After Tuesday's game against Miami, coach Frank Vogel said Granger would likely sit out Wednesday. "Yeah, that's my anticipation," Vogel said Tuesday. "I don't think he can play (Wednesday at Cleveland)."
Analysis: Granger is averaging a season-high 19.5 points per game in February, so this is a tough time for him to go down with an injury. Sprained ankles can definitely be problematic, so there is no telling how long Granger will be sidelined. We will keep you posted on his status, but daily league owners need to look to healthier alternatives in the meantime.

Markieff Morris
Morris has best scoring game yet
Markieff Morris, PF, PHO
2/14/2012
News: Suns F Markieff Morris continued his recent run of solid play on Tuesday night against the Nuggets. The rookie scored a career-high 21 points and hauled in six rebounds -- including five on the offensive glass -- in the 109-92 loss. He went 8 for 16 from the floor, including 2 for 4 from downtown, and made 3 of 4 free throws. Morris also chipped in with four steals, two blocks and an assist while playing 29 minutes off the bench.
Analysis: Morris scored in double figures for the third straight game on Tuesday and has responded well to his recent increase in playing time. He is averaging 10.6 points with four rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.2 steals in his last five contests, and is shooting nearly 43 percent over that span. While he continues to come off the bench, the 22-year-old has been playing with the starters late in games and still has some solid upside in Fantasy. Keep an eye on his progress and consider Morris as more of a low-end Fantasy option at this point.

Jermaine O'Neal
O'Neal says he's ready to play
Jermaine O'Neal, C, BOS
11:46 AM
News: CSNNE.com reports Celtics C Jermaine O'Neal (shoulder) went through shootaround Wednesday morning and said he is good to play Wednesday night against the Pistons.
Analysis: This isn't the first or last time O'Neal is going to be on the injury report this season. The days of O'Neal averaging 20-plus points per game are gone. While he starts for Boston, he is mostly a defensive presence. He has minimal Fantasy appeal when healthy.

Mickael Pietrus
Pietrus lobbying to play
Mickael Pietrus, SG, BOS
11:37 AM
News: CSNNE.com reports Celtics forward Mickael Pietrus (knee) said he anticipates playing Wednesday against the Pistons, but coach Doc Rivers isn't as optimistic.
Analysis: The condensed NBA schedule has coaches performing juggling acts at times to make sure injured players get proper rest. Pietrus is obviously lobbying to play, but it appears this will be a game-time call. Pietrus is averaging 7.8 points this season and is far more important to the Celtics' cause right now. He has marginal Fantasy appeal when active.

Tony Battie
Battie rolls his ankle, available
Tony Battie, PF, PHI
11:32 AM
News: The Orlando Sentinel reports 76ers coach Doug Collins said Tony Battie rolled his left ankle Tuesday. However, Collins told the media that Battie will be ready off the bench Wednesday against the Magic.
Analysis: Battie hasn't seen the floor in the last six games, so even if he was 100 percent, he might stay glued to the bench. Battie is far more important to the 76ers cause than Fantasy owners. Continue to leave him off Fantasy rosters.

Jeremy Lin
Lin plays hero for Knicks
Jeremy Lin, PG, NY
2/14/2012
News: New York guard Jeremy Lin hit the game-winning shot on Tuesday night against Toronto, giving the Knicks the 90-87 edge. Lin, alongside Amar'e Stoudemire for the first time since becoming a starter, dished out a career-high 11 assists and scored a team-high 27 points. Lin shot 9 for 20 from the field, hitting both his attempts from long range and converting 7 of his 11 foul shots. "He continues to impress every night," New York's Jared Jeffries said. "Every game he plays better, he does more and more to help us win basketball games. You can't ask any more of a kid coming into this situation." He chipped in a steal and two boards in his 43 minutes on the court. Lin also had half of his team's 16 turnovers on the night.
Analysis: As good as Lin has been for the Knicks during this six-game win streak, turnovers are frustrating Fantasy owners. His eight on Tuesday didn't help owners in head-to-head formats. He's averaging 27.2 points, 8.8 assists and 6.0 turnovers per game over his last five games. Lin is also getting to the foul line a lot -- nine times a game -- over that span. The big question now is can Lin keep performing up to this level once Carmelo Anthony returns. He played well with Stoudemire on Tuesday and Anthony should be returning this week. Fantasy owners should keep rolling with Lin as he's showing everyone he's a viable guard option in all formats.
