2009-10 Draft Prep: Our first 12-team mock

By | Fantasy Writer

Now that the dust has settled in the NBA offseason landscape, it's time to take our first serious look at the season ahead from a Fantasy standpoint.

Up to this point, most types of analysis about the season ahead has been conjecture. Now, we've got a much better idea of what will be going down this fall in the NBA and it's time to start thinking about how drafts might look like. It's never too early to get ready, and thanks to our useful mock draft feature, you can already start getting your feet wet as well. Try drafting in Head-to-Head or Rotisserie formats with league sizes of either 10 or 12 teams. Drafts start every five minutes.

As for our first mock of the offseason, we are starting with our most popular format. The majority of CBSSports.com leagues are Head-to-Head, 12-team leagues with standard scoring, so that's what we'll address first. Don't worry, Rotisserie owners, we'll take care of you as well as we'll be doing plenty of these leading up to draft season in a variety of formats.

As the draft unfolds, I'll be breaking it down in my blog, so be sure to check it out to get a better idea of the reasoning behind some of these picks.

Here's a closer look at what we are dealing with for this mock:

Scoring

Assists- 2 points
Blocks- 1 point
Points- 1 point
Steals- 1 point
Turnovers- -1 point
Rebounds- 1 point

Rosters

10 active spots, 4 reserve spots
Starting lineup consists of four guards, four forwards and two centers

Derrick Rose
Rose to visit back specialist
Derrick Rose, PG, CHI
2:11 PM
News: Chicago PG Derrick Rose (back) had to miss Sunday's game at Boston, reports the Chicago Tribune. Rose gave an ominous sign on Saturday saying he was unsure if he would be able to play Sunday. He was correct as he had to miss a second straight game. Rose's back continues to be stiff and sore for the superstar and he will visit a back specialist on Monday. Rose could miss a few more games before his return. "You're always concerned," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "It's something he has had before. He had it when he was in high school. We're hopeful it will get cleared up quickly but we're not sure."
Analysis: Rose has now missed seven games this season due to toe and back injuries. He was thought to have entered the season in the best shape of his career, but has continued to come up with nagging bumps and bruises. "This is the most I've ever been injured," he said. "It's frustrating knowing I worked so hard. I hate missing games, especially when we're playing against great teams. I hate missing any game." The good news is that Rose truly does hate missing games. Owners can feel good knowing that he'll be out there if he can play at all. That said, he could miss some more time going forward, so owners might consider sitting him for the upcoming scoring period. Rose remains a must-start Fantasy option, when healthy.

Rajon Rondo
Rondo has monster triple-double
Rajon Rondo, PG, BOS
6:15 PM
News: Boston PG Rajon Rondo had a monster performance on Sunday afternoon to help beat the Chicago Bulls. Rondo did his damage as Derrick Rose missed the game for Chicago, but the results were still incredible as he scored 32 points, dished out 15 assists and grabbed 10 rebounds for a triple-double. Rondo went 11 of 22 from the field and 10 of 13 from the line in the win. He added two steals and had five turnovers for the Celtics in the win. It was just the 10th time since 1986 that an NBA player recorded at least 30 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds.
Analysis: Rondo had another silly performance on Sunday. When he wants to score, he can score with anyone and could be a 20-plus point-per-game scorer. As it stands, Rondo is averaging around 13 points per game on the year. Still, that comes with around 10 assists per game with a couple steals. He's not having his all-around awesome usual season, but Rondo remains a must-start Fantasy PG for use at all times for games just like the one he put up on Sunday.

Brandon Bass
Bass to miss two weeks due to knee
Brandon Bass, PF, BOS
2:35 PM
News: Boston PF Brandon Bass will miss two weeks of action due to his sore knee, reports the Boston Globe on Sunday. Bass missed Sunday's game against the Bulls. Bass played 30 minutes on Friday at Toronto and scored 10 points with seven rebounds.
Analysis: Bass was trying to play through his knee injury and apparently that caused a setback that will keep him out for at least two weeks now. That will see Bass out until at least the end of February. Bass was averaging 11.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game over 29 minutes for the Celtics on the year. When healthy, he has plenty of value in deeper Fantasy formats.

C.J. Watson
Watson drops 22 without Rose
C.J. Watson, PG, CHI
6:33 PM
News: Chicago PG C.J. Watson saw 42 minutes on the court on Sunday against Boston with Derrick Rose missing his second consecutive ballgame. Watson did not shoot well in the loss to the Celtics, but did score 22 points in the game. He went 8 of 23 from the field and 3 of 7 from long range. Watson added six assists for the Bulls.
Analysis: Watson may have scored 22 points, but it was clear the Bulls were lacking at the PG position without Rose. Watson is playing well Fantasy-wise over his last five games. Over that stretch, he's averaging 11.6 points, 6.4 assists and 3.0 rebounds with almost two 3-pointers per night. The healthier Rose is, the worse-off Watson will become. That said, Rose is really struggling with back right now. Watson has definite immediate Fantasy value in deeper formats.

Kyle Korver
Korver hits just one 3-pointer
Kyle Korver, SG, CHI
6:30 PM
News: Bulls guard Kyle Korver made just one shot on Sunday in a loss to the Celtics. Korver went 1 for 5 from the field over 19 minutes on the court. His lone make came from deep and he finished with three points. Korver added five rebounds, one assist and one steal in the performance for Chicago.
Analysis: The 30-year-old Korver has scored in double figures a few times over his last five games but is still averaging only 9.8 points per game over that span. That is a boost from his season average. Fantasy owners have Korver for his near-2.0 3-pointers per game. Outside of that, Korver has little Fantasy value.

Luol Deng
Deng streaking poorly with shot
Luol Deng, SF, CHI
6:28 PM
News: Chicago SF Luol Deng did not have a great performance on Sunday during a loss against the Celtics. Without the services of Derrick Rose, the Bulls fell to the Celtics. Deng shot just 3 of 12 from the field over 43 minutes to score 10 points. He grabbed five rebounds and had four assists in the performance for the Bulls. Deng added a steal and a blocked shot.
Analysis: Deng has shot just 12 for 35 over his last three games for the Bulls. When he's not hitting his shots, his scoring goes down the tubes. Still, he's averaging close to 16 points per game on the year and that comes with 7.1 rebounds, 1.2 steals and a 3-pointer per night. He'll have some good games and bad games, but Deng remains a solid start across the board in Fantasy.

Carlos Boozer
Boozer not enough against Celtics
Carlos Boozer, PF, CHI
6:22 PM
News: Chicago PF Carlos Boozer did his best on Sunday afternoon in a game against Boston. With Derrick Rose missing for the Bulls, it was a lost cause. Boozer scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the losing effort. Boozer went 9 of 16 from the field over 35 minutes. He also picked up a steal in the game for the Bulls.
Analysis: Boozer is only averaging 6.2 rebounds per game over his last five contests and hasn't been in double figures in that stat in a while. That, plus mediocre block numbers, lower his attractiveness for a big man. Still, with 17.6 points per game over his last five, he's making up for it with scoring. Boozer usually puts scoring and rebounding together to make for a solid Fantasy start in all leagues and formats.

Chris Wilcox
Wilcox decent out of starting lineup
Chris Wilcox, C, BOS
6:20 PM
News: Boston C Chris Wilcox got the start on Sunday against Chicago with Jermaine O'Neal injured for the game. Wilcox helped the Celtics beat the Bulls, but played just 26 minutes compared to 33 for JaJuan Johnson off the bench. Wilcox went 5 of 6 from the field during his time on the floor to score 11 points. He grabbed nine rebounds and added one assist and one blocked shot for the Celtics in the win.
Analysis: Wilcox, the veteran out of Maryland, scored in double figures for the first time since Feb. 5 against Memphis. Wilcox has been seeing an increase in minutes of late, but hasn't done much with it. He could keep starting with O'Neal out, but is still just a low-end Fantasy option across the board.

JaJuan Johnson
Johnson impressive with minutes
JaJuan Johnson, PF, BOS
6:17 PM
News: Boston PF JaJuan Johnson played well on Sunday in a win over Chicago. With Jermaine O'Neal out for the game, Johnson took advantage of playing 33 minutes for the Celtics. Johnson went 6 of 13 from the field to score 12 points. He grabbed four rebounds and added two steals and a blocked shot in the winning performance.
Analysis: Johnson came off the bench with Chris Wilcox getting the start. Still, Johnson may have out-played Wilcox and earned even more PT if O'Neal has to keep sitting out. Still, until Johnson does this consistently, his Fantasy value will remain low-end.

Sasha Pavlovic
Pavlovic out indefinitely
Sasha Pavlovic, SG, BOS
6:06 PM
News: Boston guard Sasha Pavlovic (wrist) is considered out indefinitely with his injury. Pavlovic could not play on Sunday against Chicago and is loosely considered day to day going forward. That said, the Celtics don't have an expected timetable for his return.
Analysis: Pavlovic missed six games with this same issue in January, so the Celtics will be cautious with his return. He had received more playing time as coach Doc Rivers moved him into the regular rotation. Even when healthy, Pavlovic holds minimal value in all Fantasy formats.
