2009-10 Draft Prep: Southeast Division Preview

Heading into the start of the NBA preseason, we offer a team-by-team look, including projected starting lineups and what to watch for in October as each team sets their rotations for the start of the regular season on Oct. 27.

Atlanta Hawks

Expected Starters: PG Mike Bibby, SG Joe Johnson, SF Marvin Williams, PF Josh Smith, C Al Horford
Preseason storylines: Will Jamal Crawford remain productive? Can Josh Smith bounce back?
Fantasy Analysis: The Hawks don't have any starting jobs up for grabs in the preseason as they'll be returning the same starting lineup from a year ago. The only difference is on the bench, and it's a big one. The Hawks added a prime-time player in the offseason by trading for Jamal Crawford, but they'll be looking to fit him in as a sixth man. He can play both guard positions and should get 30-plus minutes off the bench per game, much in the same way that Manu Ginobili and Jason Terry have played the role successfully in the past. However, not everyone adjusts to that role. Allen Iverson in Detroit last season is one example of that. Crawford has averaged around 20 points per game the last two seasons, but there is a real distinct possibility that production could go down this season. Pay close attention to the developments coming out of Atlanta in the preseason as far as the way the team plans to break the minutes down as it should affect Crawford, as well as Bibby and Johnson. As far as Smith is concerned, Fantasy owners should pay close attention to any signs of a bounce-back season from him after what could be classified as a down year by his standards last fall. He was a player that was worthy of a first or second-round pick in most leagues going into last year, but he's been slipping into the fourth round in early drafts this summer. The reason for the fall? His numbers dipped in scoring, rebounding, assists and perhaps most importantly in blocks. He still managed to post a very solid 15-7-2-1-1 stat line and is only 23 years of age. A return to the 17-8-3-3-1 line he averaged the previous year is absolutely possible. Keep tabs on him in the preseason and if you like what you see, you could be looking at a real steal in Round 3 or 4.

Charlotte Bobcats

Expected Starters: PG Raymond Felton, SG Raja Bell, SF Gerald Wallace, PF Boris Diaw, C Tyson Chandler
Preseason storylines: How can they improve offensively?
Fantasy Analysis: The Bobcats averaged the fewest points per game in the NBA last season, at 93.6 points per contest. The only significant move the team made in the offseason was to trade Emeka Okafor for Tyson Chandler and, ironically, Chandler is considered a lesser offensive player than Okafor. The team plays under the defensive scheme of coach Larry Brown, but their lack of a scoring presence kept them from competing last season and will likely keep them out of the playoffs once again this season if they can't address the problem. Expect the team to lean on Gerald Wallace and Boris Diaw up front, but we may see Raymond Felton up his shooting attempts from 13 per game to around 15 and that could lead him to crack the 15-point per game barrier for the first time in his career in what is a contract year for him. Pay attention to any signs of a hint of an increase in shot attempts for Felton or anyone else for that matter.

Miami Heat

Expected Starters: PG Mario Chalmers, SG Dwyane Wade, SF James Jones, PF Udonis Haslem, C Jermaine O'Neal
Preseason storylines: Can Michael Beasley be trusted?
Fantasy Analysis: The biggest news about the Heat in the offseason had to do with Michael Beasley as he was forced to enter a rehablitation facility to deal with substance abuse issues. The second-year player seemed to hit a low point and entered camp trying to put the incident behind him. However, he does have a history of off-the-court issues dating back to his days in high school and his maturity has been called into question on many occasions. He was banished from the rookie symposium for violating NBA policy before he every played his first game as a rookie. The talent is undoubtedly there for Beasley, but he is going to have to shake off the stigma of being labeled a headcase before he can be fully trusted as a high-end player. But for those willing to take the chance of a headache or two throughout the season, we could be looking at the biggest leap in statistical production in his career -- often the case from a player's rookie season to his second year. He'll have to battle with James Jones and Udonis Haslem for minutes, but we expect him to be a primary option in the team's offensive rotation fairly early in the season. A strong, trouble-free preseason could help speed up the process.

Orlando Magic

Expected Starters: PG Jameer Nelson, SG Vince Carter, SF Rashard Lewis, PF Brandon Bass, C Dwight Howard
Preseason storylines: Will Vince Carter maintain his production? Can Brandon Bass make a name for himself? How will Vince Carter fit in?
Fantasy Analysis: The Magic made perhaps the most noise in the offseason by bringing in Vince Carter. They lost Hedo Turkoglu, but the Magic will go into the season with one of the more complete starting lineups in the NBA. That could water down the amount of touches Carter sees in the offense and could lead to his first sub-20 ppg scoring season since his rookie season. Look for signs in the preseason out of Magic camp that indicate whether Carter will be looking to take a back seat to Dwight Howard and/or Rashard Lewis for the sake of wins. And if you asked the question, which one of these names doesn't fit in the starting lineup? You'd probably answer Brandon Bass. But he has a chance to establish himself as a significant contributor for the first time in his career. He will be entering his fifth NBA season and is a player who has put up useful numbers when given playing time. If you extrapulate his numbers over 48 minutes, he averaged 20.9 points and 11.2 rebounds per game with over a block per game. We wouldn't expect that type of production, but with the Magic moving Rashard Lewis back to small forward, Bass will get a chance at 25-30 minutes per game. He will have to compete with Ryan Anderson for minutes, but a good showing in the preseason could create a good amount of separation between the two players in terms of regular season minutes.

Washington Wizards

Expected Starters: PG Gilbert Arenas, SG Mike Miller, SF Caron Butler, PF Antawn Jamison, C Brendan Haywood
Preseason storylines: Can Gilbert Arenas be trusted in Fantasy?
Fantasy Analysis: Clearly, the biggest thing to keep an eye on in Wizards camp is the health of former Fantasy superstar Gilbert Arenas. He has played just 15 games combined over the last two seasons and while he has the upside of a first-rounder in Fantasy, owners aren't sure how much stock to put into a player coming off a major knee injury. He's had a productive offseason in terms of getting into shape and new coach Flip Saunders says he expects him to be the player he was before the injury, but we will all have to keep a close eye on his level of play in the preseason. It's not so much the numbers that owners should keep an eye on, or even his minutes and stamina. It's his explosiveness. Can he still get to the basket the way he used to? That was the best indicator last season that Miami's Dwyane Wade had gotten back to full strength. The first few times he dunked and didn't look tentative was when it was clear he was back to full strength. Look to see if we see that from Arenas.

Player News
Derrick Rose
Nothing structurally wrong with Rose
Derrick Rose, PG, CHI
5:44 PM
News: Bulls PG Derrick Rose visited a back specialist on Monday and the doctor confirmed the original diagnosis, reports the Chicago Tribune. Rose is dealing with lower back spasms and nothing greater. There is nothing structurally wrong with his back. Rose is considered day to day going forward for the Bulls.
Analysis: Rose has already missed consecutive games and Tuesday's contest against the Kings is also greatly in doubt at this point. It is definitely good news that Rose doesn't have anything worse wrong with him, but this has already been nagging and annoying enough to bother both the guard and his Fantasy owners. Rose has already missed seven games this season with an eighth a real possibility. Still, you know he'll play if it is humanly possible and that counts for something. Rose remains a must-start Fantasy option and he shouldn't miss too much more time following his visit to the doctor.

Zach Randolph
Randolph cleared for non-contact drills
Zach Randolph, PF, MEM
5:22 PM
News: Grizzlies F Zach Randolph (knee) has been cleared to participate in non-contact basketball drills, reports the Memphis Commercial-Appeal. Randolph, who tore his MCL back in January, is expected to return sometime in March. He is expected to be cleared for full-contact drills sometime over the next two weeks.
Analysis: Randolph continues to make significant progress from his knee injury and is on schedule to return in March, barring any setbacks. Obviously, Fantasy owners should keep a close eye on his progress moving forward to see when he will be able to get back on the court. Randolph can be considered a high-end Fantasy F, when healthy, so continue to stash him moving forward.

Kyrie Irving
Irving possible for Wednesday
Kyrie Irving, PG, CLE
2:47 PM
News: Cleveland G Kyrie Irving (concussion) participated in all non-contract drills during Monday's practice, but has yet to be cleared to return to game action, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. Irving has missed the past two games after being diagnosed with a concussion last Wednesday. With the Cavaliers' next game on Wednesday, he could be cleared for the outing with a positive showing in Tuesday's practice. "To me, he seems normal," Cleveland F Antawn Jamison said. "He's not going to be on the court unless he is 100 percent."
Analysis: Irving has now completed two straight days of light workouts as he continues to nurse his head injury. It appears he could be poised for a return on Wednesday, the first of only three games for Cleveland during Fantasy Week 8 (Feb. 13-19). Irving leads all rookies with 18.0 points per game this season and is also averaging 5.1 assists through 23 games. With his status still uncertain, he is a risky Fantasy option this scoring period.

Amar'e Stoudemire
Stoudemire shifts focus to court
Amar'e Stoudemire, PF, NY
12:09 PM
News: New York F Amar'e Stoudemire returned to practice Monday after spending the past week in Florida to mourn the death of his brother, according to Newsday. Stoudemire is expected to play in Tuesday's game at Toronto. "It feels good to be back on the basketball court," Stoudemire said. "I've been away for about a week now, so it feels good to be back." He is averaging 18.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this season.
Analysis: Stoudemire returns to the team at an interesting time as G Jeremy Lin has created tremendous buzz with his sterling production while Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony have been sidelined. But Stoudemire could benefit from Lin's pick-and-roll ability and improve on his average of 7.0 field goals a game -- his lowest total since his rookie season (minimum 10 games). Consider Stoudemire a must-start in all Fantasy formats.

Raymond Felton
Felton remains starter -- for now
Raymond Felton, PG, POR
4:24 PM
News: Portland coach Nate McMillan said Monday that Blazers G Raymond Felton will remain in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against Washington, according to The Oregonian. McMillan said over the weekend he was considering a shakeup to the starting lineup with G Jamal Crawford possibly replacing Felton. However, he changed his tune Monday. "I think he's the best guy at that position," McMillan said of Felton.
Analysis: Felton has been struggling recently and is averaging just 10.5 points over his past five games. He has been plagued by inconsistency throughout the season and posted more turnovers (three) than assists (two) during Portland's loss to Dallas on Saturday. Fantasy owners should expect a decrease in playing time for Felton as Crawford could receive more minutes. Consider Felton a low-end No. 2 Fantasy G for Week 8 (Feb. 13-19).

Jamal Crawford
Crawford studies the PG position
Jamal Crawford, SG, POR
5:49 PM
News: Portland guard Jamal Crawford sat down and reviewed film with coach Nate McMillan to concentrate on point guard play on Monday, reports the Oregonian. McMillan has reiterated that he's sticking with starting PG Raymond Felton for the time being, however.
Analysis: Felton is slumping and a lot of people are suggesting he's nearing being replaced at the point by Crawford. While McMillan has been clear that isn't happening just yet, it doesn't mean Crawford won't get a boost in minutes in that spot. The coach did have Crawford reviewing tape and that wasn't for nothing. The 31-year-old Crawford is averaging 19.2 points, 5.8 assists and 1.8 3-pointers per night over his last five games while getting 35 minutes in those contests. Should he get even more responsibility, Crawford's Fantasy value would go through the roof. He can be active in many 10- and 12-team Fantasy formats already.

Joakim Noah
Noah playing at high level again
Joakim Noah, C, CHI
5:37 PM
News: Bulls C Joakim Noah scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds on Sunday at Boston. On Monday, ESPN.com reports Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau praised Noah and said his center is "back to where he was at [the beginning] of last season."
Analysis: Noah failed to record a double-double in what would have been his third consecutive game Sunday. Still, Noah is averaging 13.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per night over his last five. He's shooting 65 percent over that span with 2.4 assists per game as well. He should be active in just about all Fantasy formats at this time.

Kosta Koufos
Koufos getting on boards for Denver
Kosta Koufos, C, DEN
5:27 PM
News: Denver C Kosta Koufos has really improved his rebounding of late for the Nuggets. Koufos played 26 minutes in his last game on Saturday as he scored seven points on 3 of 4 shooting with seven rebounds. Koufos is averaging 7.4 rebounds per game over his last five. He's only averaging 4.6 rebounds per game on the season.
Analysis: Koufos has seen an overall increase in production of late with 8.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.4 blocks while shooting 63 percent from the field over his last five games. Playing more and sometimes starting with Timofey Mozgov and Chris Andersen injured, Koufos has become worthy of some Fantasy usage in the deepest formats. He's only currently owned in 9 percent of Fantasy leagues.

Nikola Pekovic
Pekovic keeps starting job
Nikola Pekovic, C, MIN
3:54 PM
News: According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Minnesota C Nikola Pekovic is expected to remain in the starting lineup when C Darko Milicic returns from an ankle injury. And Milicic is a supporter of the move. "He deserves to play," said Milicic, who is likely to return for Monday's game against Orlando. "He's playing in a great rhythm right now. I'm happy for him." Milicic has missed the Timberwolves' past four games.
Analysis: With Milicic sidelined, Pekovic has become a dominant scorer and provided Minnesota another strong low-post option with F Kevin Love. He is averaging 17.3 points and 9.8 rebounds over his past six games -- five of them with Milicic out -- while shooting a sterling 67.6 percent from the field. Fantasy owners should continue to add Pekovic in all formats and consider him a solid start heading into Week 8 (Feb. 13-19).

O.J. Mayo
Mayo misses all his shots
O.J. Mayo, SG, MEM
5:23 PM
News: Memphis guard O.J. Mayo had been playing with some semblance of consistency until his latest performance on Sunday against Utah. Mayo saw 23 minutes in that contest as he went 0 for 3 from the field and scored just two points on free throws. Mayo added one rebound, two assists and two blocks in that performance.
Analysis: Mayo scored in double figures in three of the four prior performances but had an ugly night all around against the Jazz. Mayo has a scoring average of 12.0 points per game for the year with 1.3 3-pointers and 3.2 rebounds. That is OK production, though Mayo is only at 9.8 points, 1.0 3-pointers and 3.8 rebounds over his last five. Not playing all that well right now, Mayo should only be actively used in deeper Fantasy formats.
