Waiver Wire: Never too early to tweak

  •

Each Week, Fantasy Basketball Writer Sergio Gonzalez gives Fantasy owners his top choices by position for players to pick up for the upcoming scoring period based upon matchups and other factors. He also gives Fantasy owners in deeper leagues his choices for top pick ups among players owned in under 20 percent of leagues as well as players to scoop up and stash away.

Top Guard Free Agent options for Week 3

1. Ronnie Brewer, Jazz (@NY, @BOS, @PHI, @CLE): Brewer scored at least 16 points in his first three games of the season before being held to 7 points against Dallas on Nov. 3. He will get 35-plus minutes per game in a four-tilt week that includes a matchup against a Knicks team that gives up a ton of points. He's a nice fill-in. Owned Percentage: 65 percent

Fantasy Basketball - Waiver Wire: Never too early to tweak : FantasyNews.CBSSports.com

2. Ramon Sessions, Timberwolves (@GS, POR, DAL, @MEM): You'll have to trust us on this one. Sessions has gotten off to a very poor start with his new team, but we think Week 3 will be the first week where he starts to live up to the potential he showed each of the last two years in Milwaukee. The T'Wolves will play against the Warriors and Grizzlies, two teams that play fast-paced games that lead to a lot of scoring and high-volume stats. Anybody looking for a stopgap No. 4 guard with some upside could look his way in Week 3. Owned Percentage: 68 percent

3. Thabo Sefolosha, Thunder (@SAC, @LAC, @SA, LAC): This one is a real sleeper for you as Sefolosha is owned in under 10 percent of CBSSports.com leagues. He's a scrapheap option that we recommend plugging in to your lineup this week if the other two options listed are not available. Sefolosha is starting and getting 30-plus minutes per game. He scored 12 points with 4 rebounds and an assist against the Lakers on Nov. 3 and should be able to put up similar stat lines against weak defensive teams in the Kings and Clippers this week. Owned Percentage: 9 percent

Avoid for Week 3: Ty Lawson, Charlie Bell, Anthony Parker, Jason Williams, Damien Wilkins

Latest Gonzalez chat transcript (4/6)

1. Kelenna Azubuike, Warriors (MIN, @IND, @NY, @MIL): The Warriors swingman has been coming off the bench for the Warriors, but he could get a chance to run with the starting lineup soon for however long that lasts, knowing Don Nelson and his whimsical ways. But starter or not, Azubuike has been productive already this season. He averaged 15.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in the first week of the season and will be playing one of the more favorable schedules of the Fantasy season against horrible defensive teams in Minnesota, Indiana and a game against the Knicks that could easily have both teams scoring 110 plus points.Owned Percentage: 51 percent

2. Corey Brewer, Timberwolves (@GS, POR, DAL, @MEM): In leagues that allow for multiple eligibility, Brewer should qualify at guard and in those leagues we'd rank him ahead of his teammate Sessions for Week 3. But in leagues where he is eligible only at forward, he ranks as the second-best free agent option this week. He has gotten off to a great start and has even become a focal point in the offense in recent games, seeing 18 shots against the Suns on Nov. 1 and 21 shots against the Clippers on Nov. 2. We like his matchups in Week 3 against the Warriors and Grizzlies specifically and consider him an excellent one-week stopgap at whatever position you may need him. Owned Percentage: 53 percent

3. Travis Outlaw, Trail Blazers (@MEM, @MIN, @NO, @CHA): Outlaw is a waiver-wire favorite in Fantasy leagues, often times a go-to guy for one-week fill ins. Well, that's exactly the case for Week 3. The Blazers have a couple of favorable matchups against Memphis and Minnesota in a four-game week and Outlaw has already had a pair of big games against the Rockets and Hawks this season. He should manage a useful week as a No. 4 forward. Martell Webster is getting the starts, but Outlaw has the better possibility for bigger stat lines. Owned Percentage: 39 percent

Avoid for Week 3: Grant Hill, Ryan Anderson, DeJuan Blair, Shelden Williams

Top Center Free Agent options for Week 3:

1. Udonis Haslem, Heat (WAS, CLE, NJ): Fantasy owners will have to check their eligibility rules, but in leagues where Haslem is eligible at center, he is by far the most attractive option. As usual, it's slim pickings at center when it comes to the waiver wire and there aren't many players who can offer you up a double-double on any given night, regardless of the opponent. Haslem has averaged 11.8 points and 10.8 rebounds through his first four games despite coming off the bench and is available in over 50 percent of CBSSports.com leagues. Owned Percentage: 52 percent

2. Erick Dampier, Mavericks (HOU, @SA, @MIN, @DET): In leagues where Haslem is not eligible or available, Dampier may be your best bet for a useful week for this upcoming scoring period. Don't expect any big games, but Dampier has four games, including a game against a Rockets team without much of an inside presence. He is averaging 9.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks -- including six blocks against Utah on Nov. 3. Owned Percentage: 21 percent

3. Nenad Krstic, Thunder (@SAC, @LAC, @SA, LAC): Dampier is our choice for a "safer" play, but Krstic offers the most upside outside of Haslem. Krstic had 20 points and 7 rebounds in the team's opener against Sacramento, a team he'll face again in Week 3, but he's tailed off significantly since then and has seen Etan Thomas take some of his playing time in recent games. The four-game week and favorable matchups against the Kings and Clippers make him worthy of one-week use as a No. 2 center in standard formats. Owned Percentage: 32 percent

Avoid for Week 3: Brandon Bass, Shelden Williams, Sean May, Joel Przybilla

Best scrapheap free agents for Week 3*:

1. Ben Wallace, F, Pistons: Wallace is available in 81 percent of CBSSports.com leagues, but that may change real soon. As of Tuesday, he was one more start away from regaining center eligibility in leagues that allow multiple positions after making the first four starts of the season at center for the Pistons. A return to Detroit has rejuvinated him as he averaged 10.3 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals through four games. He could actually be plugged in at center in Week 3 if he gets the fifth start this week as we expect. Owned Percentage: 19 percent

2. Chase Budinger, G, Rockets: The rookie scored 17 points with 5 rebounds and 2 assists on Nov. 2 at Utah and is getting around 20 minutes off the bench for the Rockets. He had a strong preseason and the Rockets are looking to him as a perimeter threat. The Rockets should play in at least two high-scoring games in Week 3 against Memphis and at Sacramento and Budinger could be in the mix for those games. Owned Percentage: 7 percent

3. Etan Thomas, C, Thunder: Available in 98 percent of CBSSports.com leagues, he's slowly and quietly taking minutes away from Nenad Krstic. He had 9 rebounds on Nov. 1 against Portland and 11 rebounds to go with 9 points and 3 blocks on Nov. 3 against the Lakers. Need a last-ditch center in deep leagues? Thomas could be your guy. Matchups against the Kings and the Clippers this week play to his favor. Owned Percentage: 3 percent

4. Rudy Fernandez, G, Trail Blazers: Fernandez tends to be erratic due to his role off the bench, but he does have the ability to get hot like he did on October 29 against Denver when he scored 22 points. He's good for one or two threes and a steal per game per game with the ability to pop off for a big game somewhere in his four-game slate. His best bet would be against the Grizzlies or Timberwolves. Owned Percentage: 27 percent

* Owned in less than 20 percent of CBSSports.com leagues

Top long-term free agent pick ups:

1. Courtney Lee, G, Nets (Available in 31 percent of CBSSports.com leagues) : Lee is starting to get comfortable in the Nets offense and has the potential to become a go-to scorer before long. He's already getting 10-plus shots in the offense and is a great source for steals with low turnover numbers. If he's still available in your league, he should not be.

2. Marreese Speights, F, 76ers (Available in 36 percent of CBSSports.com leagues):Speights is a very promising forward with a lot talent and upside, but his role off the bench will lead to inconsistent results. Consider his first four games. He's had two big games, scoring 20-plus points with good peripheral stats and he's also had two games with under six points. Should something happen to Elton Brand, be it an injury or a trade, Speights could become a superstar in Fantasy.

3. Chris Douglas-Roberts, G, Nets (Available in 39 percent of CBSSports.com leagues): After a slow start, the second-year player out of Memphis has begun to live up to his preseason billing as a potential sleeper. He is attacking the basket more and looks confident doing so. He didn't have a single free throw in his first two games this season, but has 17 attempts in his last two games, both 20-plus performances. Much like Lee, the Nets are in need of a go-to option and Douglas-Roberts is a good bet to be that guy -- or at least one of them.

4. Will Bynum, G, Pistons (Available in 90 percent of CBSSports.com leagues): Bynum had an impressive preseason and has had a decent start to the regular season, but that has to do partly with the absence of Richard Hamilton as once Hamilton returns, his touches should diminish greatly. However, keep these performances in mind and stash him away as another injury to Hamilton or one to Rodney Stuckey could mean big things for Bynum down the road.

Player News
David West
West guts one out
David West, PF, IND
5/25/2012
News: Pacers forward David West played through his sprained left knee on Thursday in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat, leading the Pacers with 24 points on 10 of 16 shots. West took advantage of the often significant height advantages he was working with against Miami’s undersized front-line, however he was able to pick up just five rebounds in 41 minutes, as the Pacers fell, 105-93, ending their season.
Analysis: West’s production took a tumble this season, however given the fact that he was coming off a major knee injury and playing in a contracted season due to the lockout, the fact that he was able to play in all 66 games this season as a full-time player says a lot about his toughness. His scoring fell from 18.9 points per game to 12.8 this season, however given that he was going from Chris Paul to Darren Collison at the point, that drop off was to be expected. At 31 years of age, West’s best days are probably behind him, however he should still be targeted in the middle rounds on Draft Day as a solid option at the forward position.

Danny Granger
Granger plays through ankle injury
Danny Granger, SF, IND
5/25/2012
News: As expected, Pacers forward Danny Granger played through his ankle injury on Thursday for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against Miami. Granger gutted out 38 minutes in the game, scoring 15 points on 6 of 14 shooting, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out four assists, as the Pacers’ season ended, 105-93. He finished the postseason averaging 17.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in 11 games.
Analysis: While the Pacers enjoyed their finest season as a team in some time, Granger had one of his toughest as professional. While he still scored 18.7 points per game on the season, that came on a career-low 41.6 percent shooting, while he posted his lowest rebounding and assist averages since his second season in the league. Granger remained a dead-eye three-point shooter, hitting 38.1 percent of his attempts, so most of the fall off came from inside the arc. Still, he is capable of filling up the boxscore on any given night, and given his career averages, should be able to shoot the ball better next season, so target him with an early-round pick on Draft Day as your No. 2 Fantasy forward.

Udonis Haslem
Haslem earns suspension
Udonis Haslem, PF, MIA
5/24/2012
News: Heat forward Udonis Haslem earned a one-game suspension for his Flagrant foul on Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough on Tuesday, meaning he will be unavailable for the team's matchup on Thursday in a potentially-decisive Game 6.
Analysis: Haslem insists that the hit on Hansbrough was not intentional, and he plans on appealing the suspension, however that won't change his status for the game. He is averaging just 6.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in the series and should not be missed much in Fantasy postseason formats.

Greg Stiemsma
Foot injury limiting Stiemsma
Greg Stiemsma, C, BOS
5/24/2012
News: Celtics center Greg Stiemsma has been playing on an injured left foot for the last month, and on Wednesday it became to much of an issue for him to deal with, as he was only able to play five minutes in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal in Philadelphia. He recorded no stats in the game, afterward telling WEEI.com in Boston, "This is as bad as it's been. I'll stay off it for the next few days. I'll be ready for Saturday."
Analysis: He has managed to play through the injury with very few exceptions since the final few weeks of the regular season, so we have no reason to doubt thathe will be able to go for Game 7, especially with two nights off. Still, he sounds like he is in a ton of pain and might be limited for the game, so avoid him in all Fantasy postseason formats.

Avery Bradley
Report: Bradley likely done for postseason
Avery Bradley, PG, BOS
5/23/2012
News: The Boston Herald reported Wednesday that Celtics guard Avery Bradley "definitely" needs surgery on his injured left shoulder soon, and is not expected to play during the remainder of the postseason.
Analysis: Bradley has been dealing with this injury for a while, and he was trying to play through it until the end of the postseason, however now it looks like he is done for the season. Bradley became a much larger part of the Celtics’ plans this season, logging career highs across the board in his second season in the league. If the Celtics can advance in the postseason, he may try to get on the floor again, however at this point that is not looking likely, so don’t rely on him in postseason Fantasy formats.

Lance Stephenson
Stephenson takes hard foul
Lance Stephenson, SG, IND
5/23/2012
News: Little-used Pacers’ reserve guard Lance Stephenson was forced to get X-rays on his collarbone after Tuesday’s Game 5 in Miami, as the result of an elbow from Heat center Dexter Pittman in the waning moments of a 115-83 Heat victory. Stephenson, who drew criticism from Heat players after making a choke sign during Game 3 towards LeBron, appears to have escaped relatively unscathed, as the X-rays showed no fractures. Pittman received a Flagrant 1 foul for the play and may be looking at a suspension.
Analysis: Stephenson had played just six minutes in the postseason prior to Game 5, as he has been used only in blowouts. The injury looked serious at the time, however it appears there was no long-term damage done. Having said that, this may be the last we have seen of Stephenson in the postseason, so he is not worth owning in any Fantasy postseason leagues.

Dwyane Wade
Report: Wade gets fluid drained from knee
Dwyane Wade, SG, MIA
5/21/2012
News: Heat guard Dwyane Wade struggled in a major way during the first three games of the Eastern Conference Semifinal against Indiana, with the worst of it coming during a 2 for 13 shooting night in Game 3 when he scored just five points. According to ESPN.com, there is an explanation for that, as he reportedly needed fluid drained from his left knee prior to the game. That seemed to do the trick, as he bounced back in a major way on Sunday, scoring 30 points on 13 for 23 shooting to lead the Heat to a 101-93 victory in Game 4.
Analysis: Wade shot just 31 percent from the field in the first three games of the series, and there had been rumblings that he was dealing with a lower-leg injury that had been limiting him, so this reported certainly seems believable. Wade bounded back in a major way on Sunday, looking very much like a new man. Hopefully he can sustain this production moving forward, as he is a must-start Fantasy option for all postseason formats.

Rudy Fernandez
Fernandez mulls over options
Rudy Fernandez, SG, DEN
5/21/2012
News: Nuggets guard Rudy Fernandez is spending the summer in Spain recovering from back surgery and, as he told TuBasket.com, a Spanish-language website that covers basketball in Spain, he may decide to stay there even when he heals up. Fernandez turned down a contract offer from Real Madrid last summer that would have made him the highest-paid player in Spain, however as a restricted free-agent this year, he plans on weighting all of his options.
Analysis: The contract Fernandez reportedly turned down last summer would have been for six years and $26 million, so it will be interesting to see if any teams are willing to offer him something comparable. Fernandez was unable to emerge as a full-time player in Denver’s deep rotation, averaging 8.6 points in 22.9 minutes per game. He seems to have hit a plateau in his NBA development from his 10.4 point per game campaign as a rookie, so even if he does keep on playing in the NBA, he will likely be just a Fantasy reserve, so don’t plan on targeting him on Draft Day.

Daniel Gibson
Cavs expected to keep Gibson
Daniel Gibson, PG, CLE
5/20/2012
News: Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson, who missed the final month of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left ankle, is expected to return to the team for the 2012-13 season, as the Cleveland Plain Dealer speculates that the team will pick up the $4.8 million team option on him.
Analysis: Gibson is expected to be recovered well before the beginning of the season, so the only question heading into next season will be that team option. Gibson struggled with his shot last season, hitting just 35.1 percent of his attempts from the field, however at that price the team should find a place for hm. He missed 31 games last season, however as a backup point guard with range, he gives the team decent production. However as long as Kyrie Irving is around, Gibson won't have anything close to starter's minutes and should be avoided in all leagues on Draft Day.

Jarrett Jack
Jack resting stress fracture
Jarrett Jack, PG, NO
5/20/2012
News: Hornets guard Jarrett Jack, who missed the final three weeks of the season with a stress fracture in his right foot, has been resting the injury and is expected to get back on the floor in preparation for next season by the middle of June. Jack, who is entering the final season of a four-year contract with the Hornets, was expected to rest for six to eight weeks after being shut down for the season.
Analysis: Jack was quite good in replacing Chris Paul this season, average 15.6 points, 6.3 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game – career highs across the board. The 28-year-old dealt with injuries throughout, missing 11 games, however he was solid whenever he played and should return to that same level of effectiveness in the coming season. He should be considered a solid Fantasy option at the guard position, one worth selecting with an early middle round pick on Draft Day.
