Fantasy Fast Break: Injuries and their impact

By | Fantasy Writer

Each week, Fantasy Basketball Writer Sergio Gonzalez takes a look at situations that Fantasy owners should monitor over the course of the upcoming week. Have a look at the top storylines in Fantasy hoops and how they might affect your team going forward.

How big of an impact will Troy Murphy's return have on Roy Hibbert?

Fantasy owners have gotten a lot out of Roy Hibbert early on this season, but many of his owners are still worried.

And with good reason.

Fantasy Basketball - Fantasy Fast Break: Injuries and their impact : FantasyNews.CBSSports.com

Hibbert is averaging a very respectable 11.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks over the first 11 games of the season. However, he's been a much different player when Troy Murphy has been healthy than when he has been hurt. Fantasy owners will want to pay close attention to which Hibbert emerges during the course of Indiana's three-game week.

In the seven games that Hibbert played while Murphy was injured, Hibbert managed to average 14.4 points and 10.0 rebounds with excellent block totals that would qualify as a No. 1 center in just about any format. In the four games that Hibbert played with Murphy healthy, he managed just 6.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

One would figure that with the way Hibbert was playing while Murphy was sidelined, he'd be relied upon even when Murphy did return. That hasn't been the case, however.

In the two games since Murphy returned from his back injury, Hibbert has scored a combined 11 points with 6 rebounds. The return of Jeff Foster could also have a negative impact on his overall minutes, which could detract further from his Fantasy value.

Fantasy owners are understandably frustrated when a capable player doesn't get the opportunity to put up the numbers he is capable of (think Paul Millsap in Utah). Fantasy owners will want to monitor this situation during Week 5 to see if that is indeed the case. He is a player to avoid starting in the meantime.

Who benefits while Andrew Bogut is out?

With Andrew Bogut expected to miss the next 2-4 weeks, there will be plenty of opportunities for players to step up in Milwaukee.

And while it has been Dan Gadzuric getting the starts in Bogut's place, the early returns have Ersan Ilyasova being the player who sees the biggest Fantasy boost.

In the first two games after Bogut has been out, Ilyasova has put up very good scoring and rebounding numbers. On Nov. 21, he scored 18 points with 12 rebounds and 3 assists against Memphis in a sign that he can be trusted as more than just a fringe starter for the next couple of weeks.

Fantasy owners will want to pay very close attention to his production in a four-game week for Ilyasova and the Bucks to see if he will be able to maintain this type of production. If he's still out there on the waiver wire in your league, look to stash him in case he does remain this solid.

But you should also follow the box scores of Milwaukee games this week to see how other potential beneficiaries of Bogut's absence will fare.

Hakim Warrick had 16 points and 8 rebounds against Charlotte on Nov. 20, the first game following Bogut's injury. He followed that up with a weak performance at Memphis, but if he can stay out of foul trouble (he had four fouls in 19 minutes against the Grizzlies) he too could be a useful Fantasy stopgap.

Kurt Thomas may not be able to help Fantasy owners with much scoring, but he could still be of some help in larger leagues as a possible No. 2 center. He had 10 rebounds and 8 points with 3, steals, 2 blocks and 2 assists against Memphis and is readily available in most Fantasy hoops leagues.

What should Fantasy owners do with Nate Robinson?

Nate Robinson has done some off-the-wall things in his career, but he may never have done anything as crazy as when he shot at his own basket Saturday against the Nets as time expired in the first quarter.

But it's the Fantasy owners who are cutting him who may be the craziest.

The shot he took Saturday went in and while it didn't count because time had expired, Robinson did not see the floor the rest of the game. Coach Mike D'Antoni would go on to say the incident had nothing to do with his being benched, but the benching did seem to light a fire under Nate. The diminutive guard went on to score 19 points on Sunday against Boston and that should serve as a reminder of what he is capable of doing in that Knicks offense.

Fantasy owners have been quick to discard Robinson, who has seen his ownership drop from 80 to 65 percent due to his horrible start to the season. But remember that he averaged 17.2 points, 4.1 assists and 3.9 rebounds just a year ago under D'Antoni and has the ability to go on prolonged hot streaks. He averaged 24-5-5 over the month of February last season, for example.

Look to see if this really is the start of one of those hot streaks. And make sure he's on your roster if it is.

With Toney Douglas being used less in recent games and Larry Hughes not being the most reliable of shooting guards, the door could be creaking open for Robinson.

Who gets affected by the return of Devin Harris?

Devin Harris wrote on his Twitter account last Thursday that he was going to try to go for the Sixth Man of the Year award. That was in anticipation of his return to the floor off the bench Saturday against the Knicks.

While that comment may have been toungue-in-cheek, the Nets did have Harris come off the bench against the Knicks and could continue to maintain that approach over the next few games while he gets his playing legs back under him.

So this next week will go a long way in determining who out of Courtney Lee, Rafer Alston and Terrence Williams can retain their Fantasy appeal.

Lee missed seven games while Harris was out and may have opened the door for Williams, who flourished while both Harris and Lee were out. Alston had a few solid games while Harris was out, but will need to prove that he didn't wear down after playing heavy minutes in the absence of Harris due to the lack of options for New Jersey.

Chris Douglas-Roberts emerged as a go-to-guy in New Jersey while Harris was out and it will also be interesting to see where he stands in the pecking order between Harris and Brook Lopez. We feel he has done enough in Harris' absence to be considered part of a triumvirate with them, but this week will begin to clear up exactly where he stands.

What should Fantasy owners do with Andre Miller?

Andre Miller must really be regretting his move to Portland this offseason. He has already stated publicly that had he known he was not going to be used as a starter, he would have chosen to sign elsewhere this offseason.

However, after getting inserted into the starting lineup for nine straight games, it seemed there was still hope for Miller to return to his status as a solid assist man and viable Fantasy option in all formats.

Not so fast.

Coach Nate McMillan and Brandon Roy think that the team is at its best when Roy and Miller aren't on the court at the same time. That would allow for Roy to have the ball in his hands more often.

Miller disagrees, saying that he didn't think there was a problem as the team went 7-2 with him as a starter. He's right about that.

But Roy is the team's best playmaker and the coaching staff will do whatever it takes to make him as comfortable as possible. With Miller on the bench, Roy moves into the back court alongside Steve Blake and Martell Webster gets a chance to start at small forward. Webster took advantage of that Sunday to the tune of 21 points and 13 rebounds against Minnesota.

To expect that type of production consistently would be foolish, but with Travis Outlaw out with an injury, an increased role for Webster could be very beneficial to him and to Fantasy owners.

Miller's loss could be not only Webster's gain, but also Blake's as well. Blake has retained a starting job this season moving from the point to the two-spot and back again. He is averaging 10.6 points and 5.8 assists with 3.0 rebounds over his last five games and the further Miller is from the starting unit, the more Fantasy value he will have.

Spencer Hawes
Hawes not on road trip
Spencer Hawes, C, PHI
1:47 PM
News: Philadelphia C Spencer Hawes did not accompany the 76ers on the current three-game road trip they are on, reports the team's PR representative. Hawes' Achilles' injury continues to give him trouble. He's likely to miss all three games on the road trip beginning with Saturday at Cleveland. The Sixers play at Charlotte on Monday and at Orlando on Wednesday. They don't return home until next Friday against Dallas.
Analysis: Hawes can return to action next Friday against Dallas when the 76ers return home from the road trip. Nikola Vucevic, Lavoy Allen and Tony Battie will continue to play more in Hawes' absence. Hawes, when healthy, is worth starting in most Fantasy formats. Unfortunately, he should be kept grounded for the next week or so.

Carmelo Anthony
Anthony back Tuesday now?
Carmelo Anthony, SF, NY
1:08 PM
News: The New York Post reports Saturday that Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni has not ruled out Carmelo Anthony (groin) from returning Tuesday at Toronto. That said, the coach also referred to it as a "long shot." On Friday, D'Antoni said Anthony would first begin practicing early in the week.
Analysis: Despite the encouraging news, it's still not assured that Anthony will be able to return next week as the Knicks continue to be conservative with the star forward. He has now missed four games this season and will certainly be an injury risk heading into Fantasy Week 8 (Feb. 13-19). Anthony remains New York's leading scorer and is averaging 22.3 points per game. Fantasy owners should continue to reserve him in all formats for now.

DeShawn Stevenson
Stevenson about a week away
DeShawn Stevenson, SG, NJ
12:54 PM
News: Nets guard DeShawn Stevenson (knees) expects to return to practice in the upcoming week, reports the Newark Star-Ledger.
Analysis: Stevenson said his knees are feeling as good as they did back in 2004 after he underwent Orthokine therapy, the same procedure Kobe Bryant underwent over the summer. That said, he's still not expected back for at least a week. Fantasy owners can continue to ignore him.

Jeremy Lin
Lin lights it up in MSG
Jeremy Lin, PG, NY
2/10/2012
News: Knicks guard Jeremy Lin continues to make his presence felt in the NBA as he scored a career-high 38 points on Friday night versus the Lakers. Lin shot 13 for 23 from the field, going 2 for 4 from downtown, and converted 10 of his 13 foul shots for New York. "I didn't try to see this game as any different," Lin said. "I just try to make sure that when I get there on the floor, I play as hard as I can and try to do everything I can to help the team win. I'm not too worried about proving anything to anybody. As a team we're growing and trying to build on the momentum." Even though he committed six turnovers, Lin still did more good than bad. He added seven assists, two steals and four rebounds in his 39 minutes on the court, as well as taking some key charging penalties. The Knicks would hold on for the 92-85 win.
Analysis: Lin has scored 89 points in his first three starts. Lin is averaging 28.5 points and 8.0 assists per game over his last four outings. With the Knicks missing both Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire, Lin has stepped up to lead the team to four straight wins. It's hard to believe Lin will be able to keep this kind of production up, especially with him logging so many minutes after hardly playing this season. Still, Lin has captivated fans and Fantasy owners alike, as he's now owned in 88 percent of CBSSports.com Fantasy leagues. As long as he has the starting job and is playing this well, owners in all formats should roll with Lin and his hot hand.

Kendrick Perkins
Perkins doubles up for Thunder
Kendrick Perkins, C, OKC
10:43 AM
News: Thunder C Kendrick Perkins had a solid performance in a win at Utah on Friday night. Perkins recorded a double-double as he scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds over 31 minutes. He went 3 for 5 from the field and added a block and two assists for the Thunder in the win.
Analysis: Perkins has two double-digit rebounding games in his last five but is still averaging just 5.8 boards per game over that span. He doesn't score much and gets a decent number of blocks. Perkins is definitely not a high-end Fantasy center. He is serviceable in deeper formats at times.

Serge Ibaka
Ibaka goes for double-double
Serge Ibaka, PF, OKC
10:40 AM
News: Thunder PF Serge Ibaka had a double-double on Friday night at Utah. Ibaka scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win. He also blocked two shots. Ibaka went 7 of 10 from the field over 33 minutes.
Analysis: Ibaka is averaging a pretty solid line over his last five games for the Thunder. Over that span, Ibaka has averaged 10.2 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game. As long as he's playing like that, Ibaka can be used in many Fantasy formats, even in some 10- and 12-team leagues.

Trevor Booker
Booker taking advantage of run
Trevor Booker, PF, WAS
2/10/2012
News: Wizards F Trevor Booker was able to notch his first double-double of the season during Friday night's contest against the Heat. Booker finished with 13 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in the 106-89 victory, on 6 of 13 shooting from the field. He went 1 of 2 from the free-throw line and also chipped in with four steals and one assist, while logging 39 minutes of game action.
Analysis: Booker has started each of the last four games for the Wizards and has been taking advantage of his increased playing time. The 24-year-old has scored in double figures in each of his last three contests and is shooting 62 percent from the field over that stretch. Booker excelled last season when filling in for Blatche and looks to have secured his spot in the starting lineup for at least another few weeks. As long as he can maintain his current production, Booker can be considered a more than viable Fantasy F in the majority of formats heading into Week 8 (Feb. 13-19).

Jarrett Jack
Jack to miss at least a week
Jarrett Jack, PG, NO
2/10/2012
News: According to the team's official website, Hornets G Jarrett Jack will miss at least a week due to a knee bruise. He re-aggravated the injury on Wednesday against the Bulls, scoring only four points to go with three assists, well below his averages of about 15 points and seven assists. Greivis Vasquez got the start in his place on Friday night against Portland.
Analysis: Jack missed three games prior to returning on Wednesday due to the injury and it looks as though the Hornets are going to give him some extra time to heal. He has been having the best campaign of his career after coming over in the Chris Paul deal, averaging 15.2 points with 6.7 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 22 games. Keep an eye on his status going forward but it looks as though he is going to miss most of Week 8 (Feb. 13-19) if not all of it. Jack should be considered a solid option in most Fantasy formats, when healthy, but owners should line up healthier options for the upcoming scoring period.

Al Jefferson
Jefferson picking up his scoring
Al Jefferson, C, UTA
1:21 AM
News: Jazz C Al Jefferson led his team in scoring on Friday night against the Thunder. He finished with 20 points and eight rebounds in the 101-87 loss. He went 9 for 18 from the field and made 2 of 3 free throws while playing 34 minutes. Jefferson also chipped in with four assists and a block in the defeat.
Analysis: Jefferson continues to be a solid option in Fantasy and is starting to pick up his scoring. He is averaging 19 points with 7.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in his last five contests, and is shooting nearly 45 percent over that span. While his shooting percentage is down from years past, the 27-year-old is one of the more productive centers in the league and could be in for a big Week 8 (Feb. 13-19). Jefferson will face off against the Hornets, Thunder, Wizards and Rockets during the upcoming scoring period so keep him active in the majority of Fantasy leagues.

Russell Westbrook
Westbrook on a scoring binge
Russell Westbrook, PG, OKC
1:15 AM
News: Thunder G Russell Westbrook had another solid night shooting the ball on Friday against the Jazz. He finished with 28 points on 10 of 20 shooting and recorded five steals in the 101-87 win. He went 1 for 4 from beyond the arc and made 7 of 8 free throws while playing 34 minutes. Westbrook also chipped in with six rebounds and three assists in the victory.
Analysis: Westbrook has posted eight 20-point performances over the last nine games and is starting to heat up for owners. He is averaging 27.6 points with six rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.2 steals in his last five contests, and is shooting 51 percent over that span. While he continues to struggle from beyond the arc, there are few point guards in the league that can score like him and he should only continue to get better at age 23. With Utah, Houston, Golden State and Denver on the schedule for Week 8 (Feb. 13-19), continue to view Westbrook as a must-start option in Fantasy.
