Waiver Wire: Prince starting to heat up

The schedule is starting to round out for most teams and some players are finally starting to hit their groove. After the early struggles that came with a lack of training camp, roles are starting to become more defined and players have stepped up for those who have underachieved.

Not all players listed this week will be long-term options, but whether it's due to injury or just a hot streak, they are trending in Fantasy and could definitely help some owners.

This week we are looking at Tayshaun Prince.

Prince struggled to find his shot in the early goings but has been more efficient from the field of late and is starting to pick up his scoring. He has always been good at filling up the stat sheet, but the thing that made him valuable in Fantasy all these years was his ability to average 13-14 points per contest without fail.

He put up 14.3 points with 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists over his final three games in Week 3 (Jan. 9-15), culminating with a 20-and-7 against the Warriors on Jan. 15. Prince started Week 4 (Jan. 16-22) with another 20-point performance and is starting to get his shooting percentage back toward his career mark.

The 31-year-old is one of the few veteran players for Detroit and is definitely more reliable than all of the younger options surrounding him. Owners in need of some help at forward should consider grabbing him off waivers.

Guards

Add 'Em

Leandro Barbosa, Raptors
Owned: 25 percent
Analysis: Barbosa was very inconsistent with his scoring over the first few scoring periods but he has been able to rectify that problem of late. He averaged 17.7 points with 3.3 rebounds during a six-game stretch that ended on Jan. 16 and shot 47 percent from the floor over that span. Since Andrea Bargnani is one of the few scoring threats on the Raptors and DeMar DeRozan has struggled mightily, the 29-year-old should continue to see solid run and has always been known for his shot-taking prowess. While he does not always fill up the stat sheet the ways owners would like, Barbosa seems like a solid pickup in deeper Fantasy formats, especially with Phoenix, Utah, Denver and New Jersey on the schedule for Week 5 (Jan. 23-29).

J.J. Redick, Magic
Owned: 40 percent
Analysis: Redick is having a career campaign scoring-wise and is starting to show some more consistency. He started Week 4 (Jan. 16-22) with a season-high 21-point performance, which was his third consecutive game with at least 13 points. A lot of his recent success has to do with his shooting percentage, as he entered the most recent scoring period shooting nearly 47 percent from the field. The Magic play five games during Week 5 (Jan. 23-29) and face both Boston and Indiana two times each. His other matchup will be against the lowly Hornets. Aside from Dwight Howard, Orlando does not have a concrete No. 2 scorer so Redick should continue to get his numbers as he is seeing 25-30 minutes on a nightly basis.

Avoid 'Em

Jodie Meeks, 76ers
Owned: 14 percent
Analysis: Meeks may have fooled some owners with his 26-point performance against the Wizards on Jan. 13 but since he followed up with just five points against the same team the following night, he is proving once again why he goes mostly unowned. After averaging 10.5 points per contest last season, he entered Week 4 (Jan. 16-22) having scored in double figures four times through 13 contests, and managed just nine points in his first game of the scoring period. While there is always the possibility for him to go off at any point -- especially from downtown -- Meeks does not contribute in other areas and will need to show some more consistency before being worth adding off the waiver wire. It doesn't help that he has Lou Williams and Jrue Holiday in the same backcourt.

Wesley Johnson, Timberwolves
Owned: 21 percent
Analysis: Johnson has been one of the more disappointing players in Fantasy this season after he showed promise during his rookie campaign. He scored in double figures just one time entering Week 4 (Jan. 16-22) and was shooting a lowly 32 percent from the floor, including 19 percent from downtown. With the emergence of Ricky Rubio and the Timberwolves running more sets with two points, it will take a lot for the 24-year-old to get back on track. Johnson isn't really contributing much for owners thus far so steer clear of him until further notice. Minnesota also has some tough matchups in the Rockets, Mavericks, Spurs and Lakers in Week 5 (Jan. 23-29).

Forwards

Add 'Em

Kawhi Leonard, Spurs
Owned: 64 percent
Analysis: Leonard has benefited most from Manu Ginobili's injury as he has been running with the starters and is starting to pick up his scoring. He averaged 13.2 points with 6.8 rebounds during a five-game stretch that ended on Jan. 15, and started Week 4 with a 12-and-6 performance against a tough Heat team. Considering he's close to 50-percent shooting on the year, the rookie should be able to up his scoring and continually fill up the stat sheet on a nightly basis. San Antonio will play New Orleans, Atlanta, Minnesota and Dallas during Week 5 so owners in larger formats should consider scooping him up.

Shawn Marion, Mavericks
Owned: 64 percent
Analysis: Marion is starting to shoot like Fantasy owners are used to seeing and his production has picked up as a result. After scoring in double figures just four times in the first nine games, he entered Week 4 having matched that feat in his previous four contests. He also chipped in with 5.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 steals over that span. The 33-year-old is more known for his defensive prowess, which will continue to earn him playing time, but he is capable to generating some consistent scoring as long as his unorthodox shot is working. Dallas has a pretty easy schedule during Week 5 with the Suns, Timberwolves, Jazz and Spurs on the docket, so consider Marion a worthwhile addition in most formats.

Avoid 'Em

Chandler Parsons, Rockets
Owned: 43 percent
Analysis: Parsons was putting up some decent production coming off the bench in Houston, but once he was moved to the starting lineup he struggled to score. Meanwhile, Chase Budinger thrived in his old bench spot, and the two could flip-flop in their roles periodically throughout the season. He rebounds well for a rookie and can put up some decent points when his shot is working but he will have to improve on his 3-point shooting before becoming more valuable in Fantasy. Owners in larger formats should leave Parsons on waivers heading into Week 5.

John Salmons, Kings
Owned: 50 percent
Analysis: Salmons scored in double figures for the first time in six games in the opener for Week 4 as he continues to underwhelm this season. The Kings' rotation has been a mess and Salmons has struggled to find his role with the club. Shooting less than 40 percent from the floor and 20 percent from downtown has not helped either, as he is averaging less than 12 points for the first time since 2006-07. The 32-year-old is only useful to owners when he is putting up decent scoring, so leave Salmons on waivers in the majority of Fantasy formats entering Week 5 (Jan. 23-29), especially with just Portland, Denver and Utah on the schedule.

Centers

Add 'Em

Zaza Pachulia, Hawks
Owned: 45 percent
Analysis: Pachulia has only been able to pick up his production minimally with Al Horford (pectoral) out, but he could be on the verge of breaking out in Week 5. He will play against the Bucks, Spurs, Pistons and Hornets during the upcoming scoring period, which will give him ample opportunities to pick up his scoring and rebounding. He is already posting more points than he has in years past and as one of the few big men in Atlanta, the 27-year-old is in a prime position to produce at a thin position in Fantasy. Owners in need of some help at center should consider grabbing Pachulia off waivers.

Mehmet Okur, Nets
Owned: 37 percent
Analysis: After being limited by a back injury, Okur has shaken off the cobwebs and is starting to produce for the Nets again. He began Week 4 with a 15-point performance against the Clippers and while he recorded just two rebounds, it was his second double-digit performance over a three-game stretch. Due to the lack of big men in New Jersey, his rebounding will likely go up as he begins to gel more with his new team. Owners should note he consistently averaged seven-plus rebounds in Utah from 2006 to 2010. Okur shoots well for a center and can help out with some 3-pointers, so plan on adding him with Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Toronto on the schedule for Week 5.

Avoid 'Em

Kendrick Perkins, Thunder
Owned: 43 percent
Analysis: Perkins has become a favorite in Oklahoma City and continues to see solid minutes, but he is not the best option in Fantasy. He shot 51 percent from the floor over his first 14 games but the 27-year-old averaged just 5.8 points with 5.9 rebounds. While his 1.2 blocks are helpful in Rotisserie formats, his appeal does not reach much beyond that. Add the fact that he will play just three times during Week 5 and Perkins is not looking like a good play in Fantasy.

Jermaine O'Neal, Celtics
Owned: 12 percent
Analysis: O'Neal began Week 4 with his first double-double of the season, but owners should not be duped into picking him up just yet. He averaged just 5.6 points with 5.5 rebounds through his first 11 games, and shot a lowly 39 percent from the floor. He also came off the bench a couple of times -- with Brandon Bass moving to the starting lineup -- as he is not counted on for much production in Boston. The 33-year-old is nothing more than a big man to redirect shots at this stage of his career, so leave him on waivers at this point.

Player News
David West
West guts one out
David West, PF, IND
5/25/2012
News: Pacers forward David West played through his sprained left knee on Thursday in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat, leading the Pacers with 24 points on 10 of 16 shots. West took advantage of the often significant height advantages he was working with against Miami’s undersized front-line, however he was able to pick up just five rebounds in 41 minutes, as the Pacers fell, 105-93, ending their season.
Analysis: West’s production took a tumble this season, however given the fact that he was coming off a major knee injury and playing in a contracted season due to the lockout, the fact that he was able to play in all 66 games this season as a full-time player says a lot about his toughness. His scoring fell from 18.9 points per game to 12.8 this season, however given that he was going from Chris Paul to Darren Collison at the point, that drop off was to be expected. At 31 years of age, West’s best days are probably behind him, however he should still be targeted in the middle rounds on Draft Day as a solid option at the forward position.

Danny Granger
Granger plays through ankle injury
Danny Granger, SF, IND
5/25/2012
News: As expected, Pacers forward Danny Granger played through his ankle injury on Thursday for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals against Miami. Granger gutted out 38 minutes in the game, scoring 15 points on 6 of 14 shooting, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out four assists, as the Pacers’ season ended, 105-93. He finished the postseason averaging 17.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in 11 games.
Analysis: While the Pacers enjoyed their finest season as a team in some time, Granger had one of his toughest as professional. While he still scored 18.7 points per game on the season, that came on a career-low 41.6 percent shooting, while he posted his lowest rebounding and assist averages since his second season in the league. Granger remained a dead-eye three-point shooter, hitting 38.1 percent of his attempts, so most of the fall off came from inside the arc. Still, he is capable of filling up the boxscore on any given night, and given his career averages, should be able to shoot the ball better next season, so target him with an early-round pick on Draft Day as your No. 2 Fantasy forward.

Udonis Haslem
Haslem earns suspension
Udonis Haslem, PF, MIA
5/24/2012
News: Heat forward Udonis Haslem earned a one-game suspension for his Flagrant foul on Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough on Tuesday, meaning he will be unavailable for the team's matchup on Thursday in a potentially-decisive Game 6.
Analysis: Haslem insists that the hit on Hansbrough was not intentional, and he plans on appealing the suspension, however that won't change his status for the game. He is averaging just 6.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per game in the series and should not be missed much in Fantasy postseason formats.

Greg Stiemsma
Foot injury limiting Stiemsma
Greg Stiemsma, C, BOS
5/24/2012
News: Celtics center Greg Stiemsma has been playing on an injured left foot for the last month, and on Wednesday it became to much of an issue for him to deal with, as he was only able to play five minutes in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal in Philadelphia. He recorded no stats in the game, afterward telling WEEI.com in Boston, "This is as bad as it's been. I'll stay off it for the next few days. I'll be ready for Saturday."
Analysis: He has managed to play through the injury with very few exceptions since the final few weeks of the regular season, so we have no reason to doubt thathe will be able to go for Game 7, especially with two nights off. Still, he sounds like he is in a ton of pain and might be limited for the game, so avoid him in all Fantasy postseason formats.

Avery Bradley
Report: Bradley likely done for postseason
Avery Bradley, PG, BOS
5/23/2012
News: The Boston Herald reported Wednesday that Celtics guard Avery Bradley "definitely" needs surgery on his injured left shoulder soon, and is not expected to play during the remainder of the postseason.
Analysis: Bradley has been dealing with this injury for a while, and he was trying to play through it until the end of the postseason, however now it looks like he is done for the season. Bradley became a much larger part of the Celtics’ plans this season, logging career highs across the board in his second season in the league. If the Celtics can advance in the postseason, he may try to get on the floor again, however at this point that is not looking likely, so don’t rely on him in postseason Fantasy formats.

Lance Stephenson
Stephenson takes hard foul
Lance Stephenson, SG, IND
5/23/2012
News: Little-used Pacers’ reserve guard Lance Stephenson was forced to get X-rays on his collarbone after Tuesday’s Game 5 in Miami, as the result of an elbow from Heat center Dexter Pittman in the waning moments of a 115-83 Heat victory. Stephenson, who drew criticism from Heat players after making a choke sign during Game 3 towards LeBron, appears to have escaped relatively unscathed, as the X-rays showed no fractures. Pittman received a Flagrant 1 foul for the play and may be looking at a suspension.
Analysis: Stephenson had played just six minutes in the postseason prior to Game 5, as he has been used only in blowouts. The injury looked serious at the time, however it appears there was no long-term damage done. Having said that, this may be the last we have seen of Stephenson in the postseason, so he is not worth owning in any Fantasy postseason leagues.

Dwyane Wade
Report: Wade gets fluid drained from knee
Dwyane Wade, SG, MIA
5/21/2012
News: Heat guard Dwyane Wade struggled in a major way during the first three games of the Eastern Conference Semifinal against Indiana, with the worst of it coming during a 2 for 13 shooting night in Game 3 when he scored just five points. According to ESPN.com, there is an explanation for that, as he reportedly needed fluid drained from his left knee prior to the game. That seemed to do the trick, as he bounced back in a major way on Sunday, scoring 30 points on 13 for 23 shooting to lead the Heat to a 101-93 victory in Game 4.
Analysis: Wade shot just 31 percent from the field in the first three games of the series, and there had been rumblings that he was dealing with a lower-leg injury that had been limiting him, so this reported certainly seems believable. Wade bounded back in a major way on Sunday, looking very much like a new man. Hopefully he can sustain this production moving forward, as he is a must-start Fantasy option for all postseason formats.

Rudy Fernandez
Fernandez mulls over options
Rudy Fernandez, SG, DEN
5/21/2012
News: Nuggets guard Rudy Fernandez is spending the summer in Spain recovering from back surgery and, as he told TuBasket.com, a Spanish-language website that covers basketball in Spain, he may decide to stay there even when he heals up. Fernandez turned down a contract offer from Real Madrid last summer that would have made him the highest-paid player in Spain, however as a restricted free-agent this year, he plans on weighting all of his options.
Analysis: The contract Fernandez reportedly turned down last summer would have been for six years and $26 million, so it will be interesting to see if any teams are willing to offer him something comparable. Fernandez was unable to emerge as a full-time player in Denver’s deep rotation, averaging 8.6 points in 22.9 minutes per game. He seems to have hit a plateau in his NBA development from his 10.4 point per game campaign as a rookie, so even if he does keep on playing in the NBA, he will likely be just a Fantasy reserve, so don’t plan on targeting him on Draft Day.

Daniel Gibson
Cavs expected to keep Gibson
Daniel Gibson, PG, CLE
5/20/2012
News: Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson, who missed the final month of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left ankle, is expected to return to the team for the 2012-13 season, as the Cleveland Plain Dealer speculates that the team will pick up the $4.8 million team option on him.
Analysis: Gibson is expected to be recovered well before the beginning of the season, so the only question heading into next season will be that team option. Gibson struggled with his shot last season, hitting just 35.1 percent of his attempts from the field, however at that price the team should find a place for hm. He missed 31 games last season, however as a backup point guard with range, he gives the team decent production. However as long as Kyrie Irving is around, Gibson won't have anything close to starter's minutes and should be avoided in all leagues on Draft Day.

Jarrett Jack
Jack resting stress fracture
Jarrett Jack, PG, NO
5/20/2012
News: Hornets guard Jarrett Jack, who missed the final three weeks of the season with a stress fracture in his right foot, has been resting the injury and is expected to get back on the floor in preparation for next season by the middle of June. Jack, who is entering the final season of a four-year contract with the Hornets, was expected to rest for six to eight weeks after being shut down for the season.
Analysis: Jack was quite good in replacing Chris Paul this season, average 15.6 points, 6.3 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game – career highs across the board. The 28-year-old dealt with injuries throughout, missing 11 games, however he was solid whenever he played and should return to that same level of effectiveness in the coming season. He should be considered a solid Fantasy option at the guard position, one worth selecting with an early middle round pick on Draft Day.
