Rotisserie specials for Week 5

by Adam Moore | Fantasy Writer
  •

As we head into Fantasy Week 5 (Nov. 26-Dec. 2), things are beginning to take shape a bit on the Fantasy landscape.

Players who got off to hot starts are starting to cool down and produce around their averages while players who got off to cold starts are beginning to heat up. We are also starting to see some trends developing as the calendar turns to December and the real fun starts. However, there are still plenty of intriguing matchups on the docket this week, which is why we have put together the fourth installment of our Rotisserie-based advice column.

Find a place for 'em

Randy Foye, G, Jazz (DEN, @NO, @OKC,@HOU): Foye has been one of more frustrating options for Fantasy owners thus far as he has been extremely inconsistent during his first year in Utah. The 29-year-old has turned in prolonged stretches of hot and cold spells and is averaging 11.1 points entering Week 5. However, the part of Foye's game that has remained consistent thus far has been his 3-point shooting. He is shooting a whopping 45.8 percent from downtown and is averaging 2.4 makes from behind the arc, which has him ranked in the top 10. While Foye has seen time at both guard positions, he could be in line to see a boost in minutes this week. Mo Williams has been dealing with a rash of minor injuries and could miss some time with an ankle issue this upcoming scoring period. That should open the window for more playing time for Foye this week and he looks to have some favorable matchups on tap. The Nuggets, Hornets and Rockets are all ranked near the bottom of the pack in opponent 3-point percentage, which could bode well for the free-shooting Foye. While he doesn't offer much in the assist or rebounding or departments, owners looking for help with points and treys should consider rolling with Foye in Week 5.(owned in 21 percent of leagues)

Jason Kidd, G, Knicks (@BKN, @MIL, WAS, PHO): Kidd was expected to serve as Raymond Felton's primary backup when he signed with New York, but coach Mike Woodson has used him as his starting shooting guard. The veteran has responded by posting 8.2 points over his first 11 games and is shooting 51 percent from the field over that stretch. While Kidd can no longer be counted on to provide owners with solid mid-teen scoring numbers, he still has been a big asset for owners in Rotisserie formats thanks to his solid all-around production. Over his last five games, Kidd is averaging 4.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists to go along with 2.4 steals per contest and is also making 1.8 3-pointers over that span. He has connected on 51.3 percent of his shots from behind the arc this season, which has him ranked in the top 10. Kidd should be able to maintain his productive ways this week as he looks to have some favorable matchups on tap. The Nets, Bucks and Suns all rank near the bottom of the pack in opposition field-goal percentage and the Wizards are averaging almost 17 turnovers per contest. Fantasy owners should continue to roll with Kidd in the majority of Rotisserie formats this week.(owned in 45 percent of leagues)

Kyle Singler, F, Pistons (POR, PHO, @MEM, @DAL): After spending the first three weeks of the season coming off the bench, coach Lawrence Frank finally decided to get Singler in the starting lineup. The rookie has responded by scoring in double figures in four of his last six games and is averaging a very respectable 11.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists since the move. He is shooting 51 percent from the field over that stretch while seeing a healthy 30.8 minutes per contest. With the losses already starting to mount for Detroit, the Pistons seem content to let the rookie learn on the fly, which bodes well for Fantasy owners. While he doesn't really excel at any one category, Singler has been extremely efficient when he has been on the court and has provided owners solid points and field-goal percentage numbers. He has shown flashes of being able to go on scoring runs and we would expect that trend to continue this week. The Mavericks, Suns and Trail Blazers are all allowing more than 100 points per contest and also rank near the bottom of the pack in opposition field-goal percentage. Singler's stock has definitely been on the rise of late, so owners should continue to ride his hot hand during the upcoming scoring period. (owned in 14 percent of leagues)

Alonzo Gee, F, Cavaliers (@MEM, PHO, @ATL, POR): While Jeremy Pargo and Daniel Gibson have garnered most of the attention from Fantasy owners since Kyrie Irving went down with an injury, there is another Cavs player who has stepped up his game. After averaging 10.8 points on 38.5 percent shooting from the field over his first eight games, Gee has improved his scoring. The 25-year-old has scored in double figures in each of his last five games and is averaging 14 points over that stretch while making 42 percent of his shots. He is also putting up 4.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.2 blocks during his run and averaging 1.2 made 3-pointers while seeing a healthy 34 minutes per game. While Gee has always been good at filling up a stat sheet, he has been much more aggressive offensively as he is averaging nearly two more shot attempts per game over his last five contests. With the defensively challenged Suns, Hawks and Trail Blazers on tap this week, Fantasy owners should continue to roll with Gee in Week 5. (owned in 65 percent of leagues)

Jermaine O'Neal, C, Suns (@CLE, @DET, @TOR, @NY): O'Neal spent the first three weeks of the season earning DNPs and playing in mop-up duty, but with the Suns' losses mounting, coach Alvin Gentry decided to shake things up. He decided to insert O'Neal into his regular rotation and the veteran has responded by scoring in double figures in each of his last five contests. He is averaging 12.6 points on 57 percent shooting from the field over that stretch to go along with a healthy 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks. While O'Neal can no longer be counted on as a reliable long-term Fantasy option, he still can be useful in spurts. He can be counted on as a decent low-end source for points and field-goal percentage when he is seeing minutes, which is the case right now. O'Neal is averaging a healthy 23 minutes during his run and that trend should continue this week against the Cavaliers, Pistons, Raptors and Knicks. While O'Neal's run may not last the entire year, owners in Roto leagues looking for some cheap help at center should get him active this week. (owned in 7 percent of leagues)

Put ‘em on your bench

Mario Chalmers, G, Heat (SA, BKN): While Chalmers' overall production has been down this season, he has really been struggling of late. The 26-year-old has become a viable option in most Rotisserie formats for his ability to knock down treys and rack up steals but has been failing to knock down his shots. In fact, Chalmers has only made four 3-pointers over his last seven games and is shooting 27 percent from deep over that stretch. He has only scored in double figures once over during his rut and has looked so out of sync running Miami's offense that he has been losing playing time to Norris Cole. Every player goes through shooting slumps at some point or another and the good news is Chalmers will continue to get open looks thanks to the constant double teams drawn by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. However, with Miami only playing twice in the upcoming scoring period and Chalmers averaging 5.8 points over his last five games, this appears to be a good week to sit him down in favor of a more reliable option. (owned in 48 percent of leagues)

Luke Ridnour, G, Timberwolves (@SAC, @LAC, MIL): Ridnour had high expectations entering the season but has been mired in one of the worst slumps of his career over his first 12 games, especially over his last five contests. The 31-year-old is shooting just 36.5 percent from the field over his last five and just 21 percent from downtown over that stretch. He has also seen his playing time decrease a bit as the return of J.J. Barea and emergence of Alexey Shved has cut into his minutes. While Ridnour's efficient play last season made him a popular pick in deeper Rotisserie formats, his lack of production and poor shooting numbers are doing more harm than good right now for most owners. Even his free-throw shooting hasn't been there as is making just 58.3 percent from the charity stripe during his cold spell. While Ridnour should be able to bounce back, owners may want to sit him down until he gets himself back on track. (owned in 71 percent of leagues)

Dorell Wright, F, 76ers (DAL, @CHA, CHI): After getting off to a red-hot start this season, Wright has gone cooler than a polar bear's toe nails over the last few weeks. The sharpshooter has failed to score in double figures in each of his last seven games and is averaging just 5.0 points over that stretch on 28 percent shooting from the field. Wright has managed to somehow shoot a decent 37 percent from 3-point range during his rut, but has not been helping out much in other areas of the box score. We saw the 26-year-old experience the same set of ups and downs with the Warriors last season and owners knew the deal when drafting him this season. While Wright can be a great source for points, rebounds and threes when he is on, he can also become a gaping hole in your Fantasy lineup when he is off. With no outstanding matchups on tap this week, owners should leave Wright reserved until he finds the on switch again. (owned in 37 percent of leagues

Elton Brand, F, Mavericks, (@PHI, @CHI, DET): While it is still very early in the season, Brand is definitely in the running for biggest disappointment thus far. The veteran has been downright dreadful over the past week as he is averaging just 3.2 points and 4.6 rebounds over his last five contests. He is shooting just 27 percent from the field over that stretch and really looks lost at times in coach Rick Carlisle's offensive system. Now Brand is starting to lose playing time due to his struggles as he has been on the court more than 20 minutes just twice over his last six games. To be fair, most of the Mavericks are struggling right now and Carlisle has been tweaking his rotations to try and create a spark. While Brand's track record suggests he will be able to bounce back, owners should wait for that to happen before getting him active again. (owned in 66 percent of leagues)

Spencer Hawes, C, 76ers, (DAL, @CHA, CHI): Hawes is the second 76ers player to make our list this week, which should tell owners all they need to know about what is going on in Philadelphia. Just like Wright, Hawes got off to a decent start, averaging a solid 9.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks. However, the 24-year-old then hit a wall and has failed to score in double figures in six of his last seven games and is shooting just 40 percent from the field over that stretch. Even coach Doug Collins was at a loss when asked about Hawes' struggles and called him out saying he needed more from him moving forward. To be fair, Hawes has been trying to play through a sore knee, which could be the reason for his recent cold spell (he won't admit as much). While the 7-footer's rare ability to fill up a stat sheet has made him a low-end Rotisserie format favorite, he just isn't getting it done right now. Owners are best to leave Hawes on the bench until he gets himself healthy and back on track. (owned in 53 percent of leagues)

David West
No sign of injury for West
David West, PF, IND
12:41 AM
News: Pacers forward David West showed no signs of the calf injury that limited him in practice leading up to Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals Wednesday in Miami. West scored 26 points in the game on 11 of 17 shooting, including 4 of 8 from the free-throw line. West added five rebounds and an assist, while turning the ball over four times in a 103-102 loss.
Analysis: West is dealing with a strained left calf, but it obviously is not going to keep him off the floor. West is averaging 35.4 minutes per game over the course of the postseason, but that is up to 37.6 over the last five games. West averaged 17.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in the regular season, and is about to be a free agent. He should command plenty of interest on the market, and will be a solid Fantasy option in all formats on Draft Day. Plan on targeting him after the first few rounds are over on Draft Day.

Mario Chalmers
Chalmers exits Game 1
Mario Chalmers, PG, MIA
12:24 AM
News: Heat guard Mario Chalmers took a hard screen in the third quarter of Wednesday's Eastern Conference Finals against the Pacers, suffering a left shoulder injury. He would not return to the game, finishing with 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting in 21 minutes. His status moving forward in the series is not yet known, but the injury was diagnosed as just a bruise.
Analysis: Chalmers is averaging 7.3 points per game in the postseason, after putting up 8.6 points per game in the regular season. This injury might not be a big concern, but it will be something for Miami to keep an eye on in the next few days heading into Game 2. Chalmers shot 40.9 percent from three-point range this season, and that is where his Fantasy value will always come from. This injury is unlikely to linger into the offseason, so it should not change his Fantasy value for next season. He remains useful in deeper Rotisserie Fantasy formats on Draft Day.

Carmelo Anthony
Anthony diagnosed with labrum tear
Carmelo Anthony, SF, NY
12:15 AM
News: Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony shot just 41.6 percent from the field after suffering a shoulder injury in Game 5 of the first round of the playoffs against the Celtics, and now we know why. Despite playing at least 35 minutes in each game from that point on, Anthony was dealing with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, according to a New York Daily News report Wednesday. The team hopes that Anthony will not need surgery, but that determination will not been made until he rests for at least three weeks. If Anthony does need surgery it could keep him sidelined three to four months, potentially bumping up against the start of the regular season.
Analysis: Anthony struggled throughout the playoffs with his shot, but he was clearly limited by the injury. When healthy this season, Anthony was tremendous, averaging 28.7 points per game en route to his first scoring title. We will keep an eye on his recovery throughout the offseason, as there appears to be an outside chance this could impact his availability for the start of next season. Fantasy owners will want to keep an eye on this injury heading into Draft Day, but Anthony should still be a first-round Fantasy option in all formats.

Dwyane Wade
Wade ready for Pacers
Dwyane Wade, SG, MIA
5/20/2013
News: The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports good news from Heat practice Sunday for guard Dwyane Wade. His hobbled knee limited him in the first-round series against the Bucks, and he aggravated it in Game 4 vs. the Bulls, but then returned to help close out the Bulls in Games 4 and 5. Going forward, it's not that Wade can or cannot play, it's to what level he can be effective. Facing a physical, bruising defense in Indiana in the Eastern Conference Finals, Wade's going to be even more banged up. Luckily, he still has another two days to see if he can get even a little bit better. But for the most part, this is kind of standard operating procedure for Wade. Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Miami Heat and Indiana Pacers is Wednesday in Miami.
Analysis: It sounds like Wade will be fine for Game 1 against the Pacers, and hopefully he doesn't suffer a setback with his knee moving forward in the playoffs. When healthy and active, Wade is a standout Fantasy option in all leagues, and we hope this knee problem is rectified during the offseason so he's back to 100 percent for the start of next season.

Dwight Howard
Howard might sign with Rockets
Dwight Howard, C, LAL
5/20/2013
News: With the Lakers hoping for a swift decision from Dwight Howard on his free agency this summer, the All-Star center has given no indication he will rush the process and has privately indicated he plans to give strong consideration to multiple teams, league sources told CBSSports.com NBA Insider Ken Berger. Though Howard is adamant his free agency not be marred by the circus-like environment that surrounded his departure from Orlando last summer, word already has spread to multiple levels of his support staff that Howard re-signing with the Lakers is far from a done deal. With six weeks to go before Howard becomes an unrestricted free agent, the team that is said to intrigue him the most is the Rockets, according to multiple people briefed on internal conversations surrounding Howard's free-agent decision. The Rockets have a young star, James Harden, who has proved himself worthy of playing the leading role for the franchise; a budding 3-point shooting threat in Chandler Parsons; a defensive-minded coach in Kevin McHale; and Omer Asik, the kind of 7-footer Howard is believed to want next to him in the frontcourt.
Analysis: The Mavericks represent another franchise that intrigues Howard, and Dallas is a minor transaction or two away from having enough room to sign Howard outright as an unrestricted free agent. Howard plans to explore all such options, and a person briefed on his plans told CBSSports.com that there are "several" teams the free-agent center is "going to take a hard look at." The Lakers still have a strong chance of signing Howard, especially from a financial standpoint, so keep an eye on what develops. No matter where Howard plays this season he would remain a No. 1 Fantasy center in all leagues and worth at least a pick in Round 2.

J.R. Smith
Smith likely staying with Knicks
J.R. Smith, SG, NY
5/20/2013
News: Knicks shooting guard J.R. Smith should be ready to cash in this offseason. After making a little more than $5 million over his last two years with theKnicks, he has a player option for next season that he will undoubtedly forgo in hopes of signing a more lucrative contract. After winning Sixth Man of the Year he should have plenty of suitors in need of a scorer lining up to pay him for his services. However, he stated within the past week that he wants to retire as a Knick. This could be a ploy to drive up the negotiating price for Smith, or he could be sincere. The New York Post Smith is expected to opt out of his contract and re-sign with the Knicks in a four-year deal starting at about $5 million because the Knicks own his early-Bird rights rules.
Analysis: Smith averaged a career-high 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds while shooting 42.2 percent from the field and 35.6 percent from 3-point range. He beat out Jamal Crawford and Jarrett Jack for the 2012-13 Sixth Man of the Year award, the first of his career. Keep an eye on what he does this offseason, but no matter where he signs he would be worth at least a mid-round pick, with his best value staying with the Knicks based on the way he played this past season.

Kawhi Leonard
Leonard drops 18 in Game 1
Kawhi Leonard, SF, SA
5/19/2013
News: Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard (knee) returned to the starting lineup for Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the Grizzlies. Leonard logged 30 minutes as he scored 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc. He also chipped in with two rebounds, two steals, one assist and a blocked shot in a 105-83 victory.
Analysis: Leonard's knee problems were a "mild cause of concern" for the Spurs heading into the conference finals. Leonard averaged 12.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game on the season, while shooting 49.6 percent from the field. His role will only continue to grow, so Fantasy owners have to like Leonard's development patter. He will be a big-time breakout candidate heading into next season, worth a mid-round pick on Draft Day.

Tyson Chandler
Chandler scores two in elimination game
Tyson Chandler, C, NY
5/19/2013
News: Knicks center Tyson Chandler worked his way around a back issue as he returned to action in Game 6 against the Pacers Saturday night. Chandler was held to just two points on 1 of 4 shooting. He also chipped in with six rebounds in a 106-99 defeat.
Analysis: Chandler will have the entire offseason to recover from his back issue. The 7-footer averaged 10.4 points and 10.7 rebounds over 66 games -- marking the second time he has averaged a double-double. He also shot 63.8 percent from the field, but only averaged 20.1 Fantasy points per week as injuries really hampered his production down the stretch. Fantasy owners should plan on scooping him up in the earlier rounds in draft formats next fall.

George Hill
Hill returns to action
George Hill, PG, IND
5/19/2013
News: Pacers point guard George Hill, who missed Game 5 with a concussion, returned to the starting lineup Game 6 against the Knicks. Hill scored 12 points on 2 for 10 shooting. He grabbed five boards and dished out four assists in a 106-99 win.
Analysis: Hill seems to be healthy enough to play and will now earn a three days of rest before the Eastern Conference Finals. Hill posted career highs in points (14.2), assists (4.7), rebounds (3.7) and steals (1.1) during his first full year as a starter and finish as the 27th highest scoring guard, in terms of Fantasy points, in all standard formats. Fantasy owners should plan on targeting him in the middle rounds of most draft formats next fall.

Kevin Garnett
Ainge has no answers for Garnett
Kevin Garnett, PF, BOS
5/17/2013
News: The Boston Globe reports that Celtics forward Kevin Garnett has two years left on his contract but is considering retirement. He turns 37 Sunday. “I don’t think I have the answers that Kevin will want,” Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said. “So I’ve got to figure there’s a lot to do [before we talk], and I think there’s a lot of questions in Kevin’s mind, as there is every year, to determine whether he’s coming back.I’m not ready to answer everything that he will want to know.”
Analysis: Garnett had another productive year, averaging 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 49.6 percent from the field and 78.6 percent from the foul line. He will likely return if the Celtics keep Paul Pierce, but that's just speculation. Keep an eye on what happens with the Celtics, and if Garnett is back consider him a solid No. 2 Fantasy center worth a mid-round pick.
