Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant scored a team-high 31 points on 11 of 25 shooting in his team's 119-99 loss to the Suns Wednesday.

One day after managing just 19 points while making 35.3 percent of his shots in the opener, Bryant came up big, managing to score 31 points in just 28 minutes.

"I told you guys from the beginning I am back to myself," Bryant said after the game. "I feel completely fine."

Bryant also chipped in four rebounds, three assists and two steals, but the Lakers still dropped to 0-2 on the young season. The Lakers square off with the Clippers Friday.

News
Lakers forward Ed Davis has a real chance to earn a large role, although he still has some obstacles in his way early in the season.

Davis has long been a productive player on a per-minute basis, but has always struggled to find consistent minutes. His career high in minutes per game came back in 2010-11 when he averaged 24.6 minutes per game for the Raptors. He could exceed that total this season, and the injury Julius Randle suffered on opening night might open up that path.

Davis played just 22 minutes in the opener, but that was mostly a result of foul trouble as he struggled to deal with Dwight Howard. On most nights, Davis won't be quite so overmatched, so we will start to get an idea of what his role is moving forward. He should be the primary backup center, but can also fill in at power forward in a pinch if the team needs more defense than Carlos Boozer provides.

Davis has averaged 11.9 points and 10.2 rebounds per-36 minutes in his career, so he probably isn't a nightly double-double threat even with a larger role. However, he can provide help in defensive categories as well as with percentages, and is worth taking a flier on waivers just in case he takes advantage of this opportunity.

Lakers coach Byron Scott indicated with all the backcourt injuries, the team might have to lean on rookie Jordan Clarkson as the backup point guard to Jeremy Lin during Tuesday's season opener against the Rockets.

"I've got Jordan Clarkson," Scott said after practice on Monday, per the Los Angeles Times.  "He's been playing one as well in the preseason."

Clark missed time in the preseason due to a calf injury, but when he has been healthy he has been Kobe Bryant's backup at shooting guard.

"I'm not overly excited about him playing [at point guard] as a rookie, this early, but in an emergency situation, I think he'll be able to handle it well," Scott said.  "I just talked to him about running the show, thinking about getting guys to where they need to be -- not to think about shot first. I think he'll be fine."

Injuries
Leg - Out for season (Updated - 10/29/14)
News
The Lakers officially announced rookie forward Julius Randle will miss the rest of the 2014-15 season after undergoing surgery Wednesday morning to repair his fractured tibia. Randle was injured in his first NBA regular season game Tuesday against the Rockets.

Randle suffered the injury midway through the fourth quarter Tuesday as he was driving toward the basket. He planted awkwardly and collided with two Rockets players. Randle had to be eventually taken off the court via stretcher.

The 2014 first-round pick (seventh overall) logged 14 minutes in the opener, totaling two points. He was 1 for 3 from the field and missed two free throws. He also had one turnover and one personal foul.
