Hemmings' return a boon for Aztec defense: San Diego State's pass defense is welcoming back a player it wasn't sure it would have this year. Defensive back Dey Juan Hemmings suffered a horrible ankle injury two springs ago, tried to come back too soon last fall and was finally granted a medical redshirt to have another crack at a senior season. Fantasy Analysis
After three surgeries for a completely dislocated ankle, along with ligament and tendon damage, Hemmings appears to be back at last. Given a second chance at a senior season after starting nine games in the 2009 season. He says he's healthy and the work on the field seems to agree. His return will help this defense. The Aztec defense got better as the season went along, though it helps to have an offense that can run it and throw it with equal effectiveness. San Diego State returns five on the defensive side of the ball, including first-team all-conference performers Miles Burris (LB) and Leon McFadden (DB). Burris led the team in tackles (80), tackles for loss (20) and sacks (9.5), the last two categories led the Mountain West Conference. McFadden had 12 pass breakups and two interceptions to go along with 55 tackles and seven tackles for loss. (Updated 8/31/11)
