Wyoming starter at DT might be done: Wyoming's defensive front may be dealt a blow with coach Dave Christensen's revelation that sophomore starting DT Patrick Mertens may be lost for the season due to injury. (Updated 07/21/2011)

Christensen doesn't elaborate on injuries, but losing Mertens would be a big loss. As a true freshman, he played in all 12 games and looked to be ready to blossom into a force after recording 39 tackle and two sacks. (Updated 07/21/2011).

The Wyoming run defense will need to be fortified after teams ran for 2,469 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2010. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, Wyoming’s defensive front returns intact – Josh Biezums and Gabe Knapton at the ends, Mike Purcell and Patrick Mertens at the tackles. There is also experience behind them, so the pieces seem to be in place to make things tougher to run the ball this fall. Wyoming did a good amount of position switching at the linebacker spot, so that may help as well. It needs, too, because a young quarterback could spell more issues with down, distance and three-and-outs in 2011. (Updated 8/31/11)
