Kentucky's Smith Out After Ankle Surgery: Maxwell Smith underwent surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his left ankle and will likely miss the rest of the season, the Lexington Herald-Leader reports.

Jalen Whitlow and Patrick Towles will compete for the starting quarterback job with Maxwell Smith out and both could see playing time this week against Mississippi State this week.

| Maxwell Smith competed with Morgan Newton for playing time as a freshman in 2011, but should see the field more in 2012. In about the same amount of time on the field last season, Smith's numbers actually outperformed Newton's. Smith completed 54.9 percent of his passes, threw for 819 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 5.4 yards per attempt, however, and Kentucky is often overmatched in the SEC, making it an uphill battle for Smith to obtain fantasy relevance. (Updated 8/30/12) |
