Philip Nelson took over halfway through the season and while he had some early success, he struggled down the stretch, throwing five interceptions in his final two regular season game. Despite the struggles, Nelson should progress in the offseason when the he gets more reps with the first unit as the incumbent starter.

| Philip Nelson started the final seven games of the 2012 season as a true freshman for the Gophers. His low competition percentage (48.7) speaks not only to his lack of effectiveness but to the lack of depth the Gophers have at receiver. The Gophers are looking for Nelson to be the team leader in 2013, but in order to lead them anywhere he will have to improve upon his eight-to-eight touchdown-to-interception ratio.
