News:Matt McGloin completed 22-of-36 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns Saturday at Purdue.
Analysis:Matt McGloin has been solid all season and is a great play when the matchup is right.
News:Matt McGloin tossed two touchdowns and rumbled for another score as Penn State notched three TDs in the fourth quarter in a 39-28 victory over Northwestern on Saturday.
Analysis: Overall, Matt McGloin completed 35-of-51 passes for 282 yards, the third time in six contests he's recorded 250-plus passing yards this season. He continues to lead the Big Ten in yards (1,499) and touchdown passes (12), adding five rushing scores for good measure.
News:Matt McGloin completed 18-of-30 passes for 211 yards and one touchdown, while adding a pair of one-yard TD runs, during Penn State's dominating 35-7 victory at Illinois on Saturday.
Analysis: Unfortunately, Matt McGloin was sacked three times on the afternoon, leaving him with minus-29 yards on seven carries. No matter, the outing marked his second in a row with two scores on the ground, despite not being very fleet of feet. McGloin's 1,217 yards passing continues to lead the Big Ten, though his QB rating of 136.6 ranks him just 10th among signal callers in the conference with at least three appearances this season. Ironically, the running game is keeping his fantasy value at fair levels.
News:Matt McGloin completed 24-of-36 passes for a career-high 318 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while rushing six times for 13 yards and two touchdowns, as Penn State handled Temple, 24-13, on Saturday.
Analysis: Now that he leads the Big Ten with 1,006 yards passing and nine touchdowns, his passing exploits are almost expected of him at this point. However, the plodding Matt McGloin trudged his way to one- and two-yard scores, an added bonus for a one-dimensional quarterback. Look for him to continue his aerial assault this Saturday against Illinois and its middling pass defense.
News:Matt McGloin managed Saturday's game well, completing 13-of-21 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns during Penn State's dominating 34-7 victory over Navy.
Analysis:Matt McGloin also pulled the ball down and ran six times for 13 yards on the day. After leaving Week 2's loss at Virginia due to a bruised elbow, he didn't appear to have any trouble with his arm, though the majority of his throws were in fact quick-hitting. No matter, despite missing a half of football this year, McGloin leads the Big Ten with eight TD passes and is just 25 yards off Taylor Martinez's league-leading 713 yards through the air.
Penn State's McGloin (Elbow) Expected to Play Saturday
News:Matt McGloin (elbow) said in a media session Wednesday that he practiced Tuesday and "threw a ton of balls," the Altoona Mirror reports.
Analysis:Matt McGloin injured his elbow in Week 2's loss at Virginia, which caused him to leave the game briefly. He didn't throw during Monday's practice, so his progress indicates there's a good chance he'll suit up against Navy on Saturday.
Penn State's McGloin (Elbow) Likely to Play Saturday
News:Matt McGloin's bruised elbow apparently won't be a concern this Saturday versus Navy, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
Analysis: Nittany Lions receiver Allen Robinson said of Matt McGloin on Tuesday, "I think he's going to be alright." While not the most credible source, consider McGloin -- who injured his arm in the second quarter Saturday at Virginia but still threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns -- probable to start this coming Saturday.
News:Matt McGloin (arm) left during the second quarter of Saturday's game against Virginia and is questionable to return, ESPN reports.
Analysis: He completed 8-of-14 passes for 57 yards and a touchdown before leaving. Steven Bench was the replacement.
News:Matt McGloin completed 27-of-48 passes for 260 yards with two touchdowns and a costly interception during Penn State's season-opening 24-14 loss to Ohio on Saturday.
Analysis:Matt McGloin's second touchdown pass came shortly before halftime, spotting the Nittany Lions a 14-3 lead, but the four second-half drives sputtered. Without two top skill position players, RB Silas Redd and WR Justin Brown, McGloin has limited talent surrounding him. However, since the offense picked up just 92 yards rushing Saturday, expect McGloin to air it out early and often this season.
News:Matt McGloin, named starting quarterback for Penn State last month, tweeted he intends to remain with the Nittany Lions football program despite what he called "extremely harsh" penalties delivered by the NCAA Monday, the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Tweeted Matt McGloin, "I am a Nittany Lion and will remain one. I believe in the core values I have learned in this program. It is not Nittany Lion Football. It is Nittany Lion family." A former walk-on, McGloin was named starting quarterback by new head coach Bill O'Brien last month, this after completing just 54 percent of his passes in 2011.
News:Matt McGloin will be Penn State's quarterback when the 2012 season kicks off, head coach Bill O'Brien announced this past Friday, ESPN.com reports.
Analysis:Matt McGloin has started just 10 games the past two seasons, but still taken the majority of snaps, leading O'Brien to name him the Nittany Lions' starter heading into fall. Sophomore Paul Jones might have been considered the more popular choice among PSU fans coming out of spring, but fact of the matter is that Jones, who has been academically ineligible for the past two seasons, will be relegated to McGloin's backup. "[McGloin] was our most consistent guy throughout the spring," O'Brien comments on his decision. "He has a good command of the offense at this point. And he's a tough kid, a competitive kid. He has shown good leadership qualities. And I just felt like he's the No. 1 quarterback."
News: Penn State interim coach Tom Bradley has pegged Matt McGloin as his clear #1 quarterback heading into Saturday's game with Ohio State.
Analysis: McGloin and Robert Bolden have been engaged in a battle for the starting gig all year, though neither has done anything to really distinguish himself as "the guy."
News: Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin felt he won the starting job out of camp, and thinks being called a walk-on is "annoying".
Analysis: It's clear McGloin wants this job, but so does Robert Bolden. Hit the source link and read the interview, it's a good one.
News: Once again, Penn State quarterbacks Robert Bolden and Matt McGloin are both expected to play this Saturday.
Analysis: Still no solid number one, still no quarterback to consider on your fantasy squad from Penn State.
News: Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Eastern Michigan.
Analysis: Robert Bolden started the game, but it was McGloin who enjoyed the big day. This remains a situation to steer clear of.
News: Penn State is one of just three FBS schools to not have a touchdown pass through the first three games.
Analysis: While it appears Robert Bolden is on his way to being the main quarterback over Matt McGloin, it's still not a place to look for fantasy production at this time.
News: Penn State coach Joe Paterno said that he expects both Robert Bolden and Matt McGloin to play against Alabama Saturday night.
Analysis: Let's put it this way -- If you were starting either of them this weekend, your fantasy team probably has bigger issues. Until they name a starter, it's best to stay away.
News: Penn State quarterback Robert Bolden started, but Matt McGloin was more efficient on Saturday against Indiana State. McGloin went 6-8 for 77 yards, while Bolden was just 6-12 for 37 yards. Neither threw for a touchdown.
Analysis: I am a little surprised Penn State didn't work on the passing game more, given the quarterback battle going on. Who starts next week? Stay tuned.
News: Lions247.com is reporting that Penn State will start quarterback Robert Bolden over Matt McGloin against Indiana State.
Analysis: I believe that both quarterbacks will play, but Bolden gets the first crack at being the starter. In a pure fantasy sense, Bolden would hold more value than McGloin due to his ability to run the football. Keep an eye on the game this weekend.
News: Penn State quarterbacks Robert Bolden and Matt McGloin are listed as co-starters on the official Penn State depth chart.
Analysis: This shouldn't surprise anyone. This battle has been neck and neck all camp, but I do expect one to emerge eventually.
News: Penn State has yet to make a decision on who will start at quarterback against Indiana State on Saturday. Both Robert Bolden and Matt McGloin have been working with the first team and expect to start.
Analysis: It looks like coach Joe Paterno is going to drag this one out to the last possible minute. Expect both to play this weekend.
News: Amid rumors that Penn State would name quarterback Matt McGloin the starter, The Patriot News quickly dispelled that via Twitter yesterday.
Analysis: It looks like this one is coming down to the last minute in the style of Joe Paterno. Robert Bolden or McGloin? If you are in a Big Ten league and had to draft today, I'd avoid this situation by nabbing someone else early.
News: ![CDATA[Penn State quarterbacks Matt McGloin and Robert Bolden both voiced their displeasure in a quarterback platoon. "To be honest, I'm not comfortable with a two-quarterback system," McGloin said. "I feel like you should have that one guy in there," Bolden concurred.
]]
Analysis: This doesn't look like it is heading down a good path for Penn State. Whether they platoon or someone wins the job outright, there is going to be at least one unhappy quarterback in Happy Valley.
News: ![CDATA[ESPN.com reports that while Penn State quarterback candidates Robert Bolden and Matt McGloin have engaged in a healthy and heated battle this off-season, each is ready to find out to whom Joe Paterno has decided to extend his final rose.
]]
Analysis: ![CDATA[This will be an interesting decision to monitor, even more interesting if it's McGloin that wins the job as it will be another test of Bolden's maturity.
]]
News: With the imminent departure of Kevin Newsome, McGloin becomes the favorite to take the starting quarterback job at Penn State.
Analysis: McGloin was already the slight favorite because of rumors of Newsome and Bolden leaving for other schools. Now that Newsome has taken himself out of the picture, it becomes a two-man battle for the starting job.
News: The Patriot-News, citing a report on 247sports.com, claims that Penn State quarterback Kevin Newsome has decided to transfer.
Analysis: This was speculated on back in December, so it's no shocker as Newsome was an odd-man-out in the race to start. What is surprising, is the lack of quarterback depth in Happy Valley. Paul Jones is ineligible, leaving Matt McGloin and Robert Bolden as viable starters. And Bolden hasn't exactly been happy as a clam during his stint.
News: Heading into this season, Penn State wide receiver Derek Moye is more concerned with the performance of other receivers than himself. Moye will most certainly be the top target for either Matt McGloin or Robert Bolden, but he says to watch out for Curtis Drake, Devon Smith, and Justin Brown.
Analysis: Moye has caught 101 passes, 1,670 yards, and 14 touchdowns in the last two years and could very well eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in 2011.
News: If there was any worry whether or not Penn State quarterback Robert Bolden is committed to staying in Happy Valley, his interview with BlueWhiteIllustrated.com puts it to rest. Bolden talked about how he used his summer and said "It's been great. I got a lot smarter. Got a lot better. I've been throwing the ball. I got to go home and vacation for a while. Get away, clear my mind. I'm back now. I've been lifting, I'm running, I'm in shape. Everything is great."
Analysis: Something must have changed for Mr. Bolden, and it now looks like he is ready to compete with Matt McGloin for the starting job. If either can lock down the position he will have solid playmakers in Silas Redd, Derek Moye, and Devon Smith.
News: The decision on whether quarterback Robert Bolden will stay at Penn State is still up in the air. "No, I still haven't [decided anything]," Bolden told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Analysis: Bolden split first team reps with Matt McGloin this spring and a starter has not been named. At this point you have to wonder if Bolden's heart is in it or if he's just biding time waiting for better options.
News: McGloin completed 22-of-31 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns against Indiana Saturday.
Analysis: McGloin probably isn't a great option against Michigan State.
News: McGloin completed 15-of-30 passes for 159 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions against Ohio State Saturday.
Analysis: McGloin is a decent desperation option against Indiana.
News: McGloin completed 18-of-29 passes for 225 yards and four touchdowns against Northwestern Saturday, earning the starting spot against Ohio State, ESPN reports.
Analysis: Although McGloin has played admirably in place of Robert Bolden, he's not a good option against the Buckeyes.
News: McGloin completed 17-of-28 passes for 250 yards and one touchdown against Michigan Saturday.
Analysis: We'd have to think this is Robert Bolden's job when he's ready to go from the head injury he suffered. Even if McGloin is still starter when Penn State faces Northwestern, McGloin won't warrant consideration outside of Big Ten-only leagues.
News: McGloin will start at quarterback against Michigan with Rob Bolden out due to a concussion, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Analysis: McGloin was 6-of-13 for 76 yards passing with two touchdowns when he came in for Bolden last week against Minnesota.
