News: Now that former quarterback Dayne Crist has met back up with Charlie Weis in Lawrence, he is now making a visit to Madison to check out a possible transfer to the Wisconsin Badgers.
Analysis: Keep in mind that if Crist does go to the Badgers, that he is nothing close to Russell Wilson and is not guaranteed to even win the starting job over Jon Budmayr.
News: Wisconsin quarterback Jon Budmayr (elbow) has been officially ruled out versus UNLV in the season opener.
Analysis: Budmayr's injury has turned a difficult decision -- starting transfer Russell Wilson over the senior that has waited for his turn --into an easy one for coach Bret Bielema.
News: Wisconsin back-up quarterback Jon Budmayr saw a nerve specialist on his right arm injury earlier this week and is set to have further tests done next week.
Analysis: Budmayr is experiencing numbness in his right arm and so far there has been no definitive reason as to why.
News: Wisconsin quarterback Jon Budmayr injured his throwing elbow in practice, and it's unknown how much time he'll miss.
Analysis: Budmayr was fighting an uphill battle with Russell Wilson, and this injury may very well seal his role as clipboard holder to open the season.
News: Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson is wasting no time getting acclimated to his new teammates and offensive system. From Jeff Potrycus at the Journal Sentinel: "During Wisconsin's third practice of preseason camp, Russell Wilson appeared sharper and more efficient than Jon Budmayr as the duo battles for the No. 1 quarterback position." Wilson and Jon Budmayr have split snaps evenly in practice.
Analysis: There are sure to be more updates on Wilson as fall camp progresses. While coach Brett Bielema has stated the competition is open between Wilson and Budmayr, we'd be shocked if Wilson doesn't win the job.
News: ![CDATA[Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson has taken an early lead over Jon Budmayr in the quarterback race, so says Jeff Potrykus of The Journal Sentinel.
]]
Analysis: This is no surprise as Wilson is a terrific quarterback. Budmayr may still be called upon for situational snaps and should Wilson miss time, but there's no reason to think that Wilson will not be the man in Madtown.
QB Budmayr Looks to be Favorite at QB in Spring Practice
News: Budmayr appears to have taken the lead in the race to be Wisconsin's next starting quarterback, Madison.com reports.
Analysis: Writes Tom Mulhern of Madison.com, "It's going to take a rapid recovery from junior quarterback Curt Phillips from a second ACL surgery for anybody to put any pressure on sophomore Jon Budmayr. Joe Brennan seems to have hit a wall, which is not uncommon for redshirt freshman quarterbacks during spring practices. With everything he has had to process in the last year, he seems to be grinding a bit. Budmayr's mobility will definitely be a plus during the season and he'll need it. At a shade less than 6-feet, the coaches will have to do things to get him out of the pocket and see downfield. Getting balls batted down at the line of scrimmage remains an issue."
News: Budmayr, who had been part of a four-man quarterback competition, did not take a single snap during the team portion of practice on Monday, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
Analysis: Budmayr was a bit of a long-shot to begin with because the Badgers like his potential and have been leaning toward redshirting him this season. If he is indeed out of the running, the three quarterbacks left in the competition are junior Scott Tolzien, redshirt freshman Curt Phillips and senior Dustin Sherer.
