Southern Mississippi's Campbell Begins to Practice
News:Chris Campbell was cleared for practice this week after dealing with neck and shoulder issues, the Charleston Daily Mail reports.
Analysis: Arsenio Favor will start at quarterback this week. Southern Miss has started four quarterbacks due to multiple injuries.
News:Chris Campbell threw for 15 yards on 2-of-5 passing and rushed the ball 12 yards on four carries at Western Kentucky.
Analysis:Chris Campbell actually got to play a first quarter and change in this game, before being pulled for ineffectiveness. Avoid Campbell and the entire Southern Miss offense in fantasy leagues for the next few weeks as they attempt to sort themselves out.
Southern Miss' Campbell Returns Against East Carolina
News:Chris Campbell threw for 145 yards on 11-of-21 passing with one touchdown against East Carolina on Saturday.
Analysis:Chris Campbell came on at the end of the third quarter with the team down 17 points and played all of the fourth, in relief of Anthony Alford, who was named the team's starting QB earlier this week. Considering head coach Ellis Johnson previously mentioned that he would pull Alford if he could not move the offense, Campbell's appearance in this game should come as no surprise. That said, Southern Miss now has a mess on their hands as both Campbell and Alford have had to be pulled from games for lack of productivity. At Western Kentucky next week, neither should be trusted by fantasy owners.
News:Chris Campbell has lost his starting QB job to Anthony Alford, following a week long open competition, the Sun Herald reports.
Analysis: When Chris Campbell had a predictably difficult time moving the offense in the season opener at Nebraska, it opened the door for Alford to come in and show what he can do with his legs as he is much more of a dual-threat. That said, Alford will have to perform well immediately or he too will be removed. If that happens Campbell could get his job back or head coach Ellis Johnson could possibly go with third-string QB Ricky Lloyd. It's best to dump Campbell if you still own him and avoid this situation all together, if possible.
Southern Miss' Campbell Still Competing for Starting Job
News: There is once again an open competition for the starting QB job, following Southern Miss' loss to Nebraska, the Hattiesburg American reports.
Analysis: This is almost expected after Chris Campbell passed for only 69 yards, before giving way to Anthony Alford in the loss to Nebraska. Avoid this situation entirely, until someone emerges the starter and proves that he can move offense in a real game.
Southern Miss' Campbell Ineffective in Season Opener
News:Chris Campbell threw for 69 yards on 6-of-12 passing with one touchdown in the season opener at Nebraska.
Analysis: Granted it was Nebraska on the road, but Chris Campbell was just not very accurate or aggressive in his throws, averaging only 5.8 yards per attempt. "Backup" Anthony Alford was in for run plays, which is not a good sign for Campbell's playing time moving forward. Southern Miss will have two weeks to put this game behind them and decide if Campbell is still their starting QB.
News:Chris Campbell was named Southern Miss' starting QB on Monday, the Hattiesburg American reports.
Analysis: Just as we suspected all along as Chris Campbell was the frontrunner to win the job out of spring practice. He'll take on Nebraska, on the road, in what figures to be a tough matchup for not only Campbell, but the entire Southern Miss offense.
Southern Miss' Campbell Healthy in Second Scrimmage
News: No mention of Chris Campbell's sore hamstring was made as he threw for 81 yards on 7-of-14 passing with two TDs, the SouthernMiss.com reports.
Analysis: No news is good news as Chris Campbell worked with the first team offense. Expect him to be named the starting QB in the coming week.
Southern Miss' Campbell Still Leader to Win Starting QB Job
News:Chris Campbell is still the leading candidate to win Southern Miss' starting QB job, the Hattiesburg-American reports.
Analysis:Chris Campbell was the starter coming out of spring practice and has done nothing to lose that role yet. The only reason he would not be named the starter is if head coach Ellis Johnson wants someone under center who can better orchestrate the run game (see Athony Alford), something Campbell is not adept at. We expect Campbell to officially be named the starter in the coming week.
Southern Miss' Campbell Throwing Again, After Dealing with Sore Shoulder
News:Chris Campbell threw the ball in practice on Wednesday, as he works his way back from a sore shoulder he suffered in the team's first scrimmage, the Hattiesburg-American reports.
Analysis:Chris Campbell, the favorite to win the starting QB job, is expected to be at full strength by Saturday.
Southern Miss' Campbell Dealing with Bruised Shoulder
News:Chris Campbell threw for 130 yards with two TDs on 7-of-11 passing and rushed for 22 yards on eight carries in the team's first scrimmage, the Hattiesburg American reports.
Analysis: His TD passes went for 67 and 26 yards as Chris Campbell looks to sew up the starting QB job before the end of camp.
News: The Southern Miss QB battle is down to Chris Campbell, Ricky Lloyd, and Anthony Alford, the Hattiesburg American reports.
Analysis:Chris Campbell is still considered the favorite at this point, but more will be known after Saturday's scrimmage.
Southern Miss' Campbell Still Front Runner in QB Battle
News:Chris Campbell is still the front runner for Southern Miss' starting QB job, the Hattiesburg American reports.
Analysis: Head coach Ellis Johnson praised Chris Campbell saying, "He seems to be the most consistent, making the right reads. Some of the wrinkles we've put in on the running game, he's handled it really well. He doesn't have the speed the other guys have to turn a good running play into an explosive play, but he's done a good job reading the option." Expect Campbell to start the season as the team's starting QB.
News: Southern Miss head coach Steve Buckley intends to keep the up tempo style of offense that was left by former coach Larry Fedora, the Clarion-Ledger reports.
Analysis: "We're going to be a no-huddle, spread formation-oriented offense that hopefully controls the game by tempo," Buckley said. This bodes well for the fantasy numbers of whoever starts under center for Southern Miss. For now that appears to be Chris Campbell, who left spring practices as the front runner.
News: Southern Miss quarterback Arsenio Favor has been named the team's backup for the season opener against Louisiana Tech.
Analysis: This is one name to stash away in case of an injury to stud quarterback Austin Davis. USM plays a fast-paced game with plenty of yards and points, so Favor should be monitored. Let's hope Davis can stay on the field however. Favor beat out Chris Campbell for the number two job.
News:Arsenio Favor and Chris Campbell have continued their battle for the Southern Miss backup quarterback job, but the coaching staff is still unsure who they will name to that role.
Analysis: Neither quarterback took a snap last season, but the battle is worth monitoring in case of an injury to fantasy stud Austin Davis.
