Week 13 Start and Sit running backs

by Erik Tjaden | CollegeFantasyFootballInsider.com
  •

Here we are folks at yet another Championship Week, and hopefully at least one of your leagues is alive and kicking. This is the time of the season where you lay it all on the line, scour the waiver wires for a one-week wonder, and hope to take home that gaudy looking trophy and maybe some cheese. Make sure to go for broke, leave it all on the field and any other cliché you can think of. Note: Some hosting sites break ties with bench points so load up there too.

Last Week's Running Back Starts: Le'Veon Bell (8), Jeff Demps (2), Brandon Pendergrass (18), Jyruss Edwards (4), Kenny Turner (7), Adonis Thomas (29)

Grade: C. If my picks caused you to miss your championship, I apologize.

Last Week's Running Back Sits: Lyle McCombs (5), Isaiah Pead (2), Giovani Bernard (10), Chris Nwoke (7), Matt Brown (25)

Grade: B. Did not see Brown going off as well as Bernard Pierce, but the rest of them were solid calls.

Start Em! Running Backs

James Washington, NC State vs. Maryland: If there ever a time to continue to pick on the horrid run defense of the Terps, it is during Championship Week. Washington is only owned in about 6 percent of leagues so he should be available. Washington has not gotten a ton of yards lately but is getting his touches, which should matter against Maryland.

Terrance Ganaway, Baylor vs. Texas Tech: Baylor is riding a huge win over Oklahoma and when they roll out of Arlington, it will be on the legs of Ganaway as he should gash the Red Raiders' 119th-ranked rush defense.

Ka'Deem Carey, Arizona vs. Louisiana: I know that Carey splits carries with Keola Antolin but considering the opponent, Carey should be worth a couple of scores before this game is over.

All 120

Jawon Chisholm, Akron vs. Western Michigan: Chisholm is still getting a ton of carries per game, and although the score will get out of hand real early, the Zips know they need to ride their talented freshman if they have any chance of putting up a fight. The Broncos are allowing more than 220 rushing yards per game so Chisholm should be worth at least 100 and a score.

Brandon Rutley, San Jose State vs. Fresno State: Earlier this year, Rutley was looking like a workhorse but he was bitten by the injury bug. After gaining 132 yards and two scores against Navy, it appears Rutley is back to form and should punish the Bulldogs.

Adam Muema, San Diego State vs. UNLV: I know a lot of people thought the ground game for the Aztecs was dead after losing Ronnie Hillman, but Muema showed that he was capable of keeping it alive last week against Boise State. Heading into the game, the Broncos had allowed one 100-yard rusher, but Muema gouged them for 119 yards and three total touchdowns. Well suffice it to say that UNLV is not exactly Boise State so Muema should enjoy another productive outing.

Sit Em! Running Backs (BCS)

Roy Finch, Oklahoma vs. Iowa State: Here is a SAT question for you: Mike Alstott is to Blake Bell as Warrick Dunn is to whom? Finch is doing plenty of work between the 20s but when the Sooners sniff the goal line, Bell has been getting the call and all the scores. It is best to find a better scoring option if you want to win your league's title game.

Michael Dyer, Auburn vs. Alabama: Dyer rushed for just 27 yards in the Iron Bowl last year and that was with a Heisman Trophy winner on offense. With Cam Newton slinging passes on Sundays, Dyer will get more carries but don't expect much more yardage.

David Wilson, Virginia Tech vs. Virginia: This may seem odd, but hear me out. First, Wilson doesn't score a ton of touchdowns. Second, the Cavaliers have the nation's 28th-ranked rush defense. Lastly, this is a rivalry game and you can bet Mike London wants the arm of Logan Thomas to have to beat him before the legs of Wilson get it done.

All 120

Lampford Mark, Nevada vs. Utah State: Mark has teamed up with Cody Fajardo to wreak havoc on the WAC, but Utah State is coached by former Utah defensive coordinator Gary Andersen and will be able to slow down the rushing side of the Pistol. The Aggies are only allowing a little over 120 rushing yards a game so expect them to make Nevada put up yards through the air.

Tyler Smith, Rice vs. SMU: SMU has shut down the run all year and against cross town rival Rice, this shouldn't change. Smith is getting a lot of carries but the Mustangs have only allowed a 100-yard rusher three times this year and only once in conference.

Orleans Darkwa, Tulane vs. Hawaii: Darkwa and the Green Wave offense have just started to roll, but that will all come to an end when they head to the Big Island to face the Warriors. Hawaii's best run defense will be their offense and when the score gets lopsided, Darkwa will see fewer carries. With the championship on the line, find a better start than Darkwa.

Player News
Kyle Prater
Northwestern's Prater Misses Spring Practice
Kyle Prater, WR, NWEST
5/24/2013
News: Kyle Prater missed spring practice due to an undisclosed injury, Inside Northwestern reports.
Analysis: Kyle Prater was a high-profile transfer from USC (where many analysts had him as a top-five recruit), but he didn't get much playing time last season and had just ten receptions. While this injury doesn't sound serious, it won't help him get more playing time by missing practice. He still has the size (6-5) to emerge as a red zone threat.

Nick Harwell
Miami (OH) WR Harwell Goes to Kansas
Nick Harwell, WR, MIAOH
5/23/2013
News: Nick Harwell transferred from Miami (OH) to Kansas, the Kansas City Star reports.
Analysis: It's unclear whether Nick Harwell will be available for 2013 after getting kicked off the Miami (OH) team, but it will be a very interesting situation if he does play this year. Harwell was extremely productive the last three years, catching 229 passes for 3,166 yards and 23 touchdowns in just 34 games. Kansas' offense is a wreck and completed a mind boggling 47.3 percent of its passes last year, though, so Harwell will have to be truly dominant to make a mark in the box score.

Robert Lockhart
'Canes WR Lockhart to Transfer
Robert Lockhart, WR, MIAMI
5/23/2013
News: Robert Lockhart has been granted his release, and will transfer from Miami, Susan Miller Degnan of the Miami Herald reports.
Analysis: Robert Lockhart's departure has been long rumored over the spring, and is now official. He had a tremendous camp last August, but injuries pushed him down a crowded depth chart.

Charles Sims
Houston's Charles Sims Not Returning
Charles Sims, RB, HOU
5/22/2013
News: Charles Sims shocked the college fantasy football world Wednesday by declaring he would not return to Houston for his final season of eligibility, the Houston Chronicle reports. "It is with regret and deep humbling that I am ending my playing career at the University of Houston," Sims said in a statement released to Rivals.com. "I have a lot of great memories that I will carry with me forever."
Analysis: Charles Sims graduated in May and thus has more options in his ability to transfer. Had he remained at Houston, he would have been in consideration for a top-10 spot in our running back rankings after rushing for 851 yards and 11 touchdowns, despite missing three games with leg and ankle injuries.

Daniel Schwarz
Schwarz Leaves Tulsa
Daniel Schwarz, K, TULSA
5/22/2013
News: Daniel Schwarz is no longer a part of the Tulsa football program, the Tulsa World reports.
Analysis: Daniel Schwarz's place as Tulsa's kicker will apparently be inherited by walk-on kicker Carl Salazar.

Marquise Williams
UNC Backup QB Williams Back in School
Marquise Williams, QB, UNC
5/22/2013
News: Marquise Williams has re-enrolled in classes at North Carolina, and will be a part of the team this fall, the Charlotte Observer reports.
Analysis: Marquise Williams will likely regain his spot backing up starting signal caller Bryn Renner, while allowing the Heels to likely redshirt freshman standout Mitch Trubisky. For 2013, Williams may see some snaps as a more mobile option in this spread offense, but things get real interesting in 2014 when Renner graduates. Some fans have questioned Williams' ability to be a full time quarterback, and a position change isn't out of the question.

Brandon Mitchell
Former Arkansas QB Mitchell Picks N.C. State
Brandon Mitchell, QB, ARK
5/20/2013
News: Brandon Mitchell will enroll at North Carolina State, where he'll be immediately eligible, according to ESPN.com.
Analysis: Brandon Mitchell immediately becomes a major sleeper to watch throughout August. At 6-foot-4, 239 pounds, he's the perfect fit for new head coach Dave Doeren's spread attack that has produced tremendously successful fantasy quarterbacks. He'll battle Colorado State transfer Pete Thomas for the right to start in Raleigh.

Clifton Richardson
UVA RB Richardson Leaves Program
Clifton Richardson, RB, UVA
5/16/2013
News: Clifton Richardson has decided to transfer, the school announced on Thursday.
Analysis: Clifton Richardson was plagued by injury as a sophomore, but this is a blow to the Cavaliers' backfield. He represented the only big, power back the team had. Kevin Parks value gets a nice bump as he'll likely get as many carries as he can handle. At least until top recruit Taquan Mizzell gets up to speed.

Nick Hirschman
Hirschman Heads to Akron
Nick Hirschman, QB, COLO
5/13/2013
News: Nick Hirschman transferred from Colorado to Akron, ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: A player going from a BCS team to a non-AQ squad would normally get the benefit of the doubt in a positional battle, but Nick Hirschman is probably no better than 50-50 to beat Kyle Pohl to the starting quarterback role at Akron. Hirschman has modest recruiting pedigree and failed at Colorado.

Allan Bridgford
Bridgford Transfers to Southern Miss
Allan Bridgford, QB, CAL
5/13/2013
News: Allan Bridgford transferred from California to Southern Mississippi, the Mississippi Press reports.
Analysis: Allan Bridgford should be eligible to play in 2013 for Southern Mississippi. After failing miserably at California, however, joining up with a sinking Southern Mississippi program doesn't give reason to have high hopes for Bridgford as a fantasy option.
