Report: Josh Gordon's camp considering lawsuit
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3:06 pm ET) Attorneys for Browns receiver Josh Gordon are "considering a lawsuit against the league that would include seeking an injunction to put the [one-year] suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy on hold while the legal process plays out," reports Fox Sports. However, litigation would be a gamble that would endanger Gordon's chances of reinstatement, the report said.

Matt Simms likely to stick on roster
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:47 pm ET) Jets quarterback coach David Lee offered high praise of third-string quarterback Matt Simms, an indication the team likely will keep three quarterbacks, reports ESPN.com. "Matt Simms has improved as much as any guy I think I can ever remember coaching," Lee said.

Simms will get the bulk of the playing time in Thursday's preseason finale against the Eagles.

Jon Beason says he'll get off PUP list soon
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:40 pm ET) Giants linebacker Jon Beason (foot) said he'll come off the PUP list in the next few days and believes he'll be ready for the season opener, reports the New York Daily News. Beason added he got food poisoning last week, which set back his training a bit.

Ravens restructure Lardarius Webb's deal
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:23 pm ET) The Ravens restructured the contract of starting cornerback Lardarius Webb, reducing his 2014 cap figure by $3 million, reports the National Football Post. Webb hasn't practiced since hurting his lower back July 25. Coach John Harbaugh said he's made significant progress and could return to practice late this week.

Allen Hurns leads NFL in preseason receiving, by a lot
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(2:10 pm ET) Jaguars receiver Allen Hurns, an undrafted rookie out of Miami, has caught 13 passes for an NFL-high 230 yards and one touchdown in three preseason games. He has 45 more receiving yards than any other player, and he's averaging 17.7 yards per catch.

The performance could earn Hurns a starting spot in the regular-season opener at Philadelphia. Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said he's impressed with how Hurns has handled the success.

"Really good," Bradley told the Florida-Times Union. "He just feels that there are so many other areas that he can get better at. I think for him he just wants to do everything right, not to let his teammates down. He goes out there at practice. He wants to be perfect. He doesn't want to be in the wrong place and almost a perfectionist in many ways."

The 6-3, 195-pounder caught seven balls for 113 yards and a touchdown at Detroit last Friday, most of the production coming against the Lions' first-team defense.

"He has good instincts and is really driven," Bradley said. "We saw it in OTAs – some of the quarterbacks said they really like him. They felt like this guy is a diamond in the rough. Just trust us on this. He has some talent. I think the cool thing for him was it was against the ones. He went out there and performed at that level."

Ben Tate to face stacked boxes
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1:54 pm ET) Browns running back Ben Tate is a perfect fit for the team's one-cut zone running system, but "he's definitely never seen boxes stacked the way they'll be against Cleveland," according to CBSSports.com's Will Brinson. That's one effect of receiver Josh Gordon's one-year suspension.

Cleveland has no wideouts capable of threatening defenses the way Gordon did.

James Harrison visiting Cardinals
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1:31 pm ET) Linebacker James Harrison will visit the Cardinals on Wednesday, reports NFL.com. The five-time Pro Bowler had two sacks over 10 starts with the Bengals last year.

Jordan Cameron has chance to 'put up monster numbers'
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(1:27 pm ET) With Browns receiver Josh Gordon suspended for the entire season, tight end Jordan Cameron "should have the opportunity to put up monster numbers since the Browns don't have many reliable options in the passing game," reports Pro Football Talk.

Cameron is entering the final year of his rookie deal. The website suggests the Browns have more reason now to "take care" of Cameron.

Cowboys bring back Phillip Tanner
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:59 pm ET) The Cowboys signed running back Phillip Tanner, who was released by the Colts a week ago. Tanner played for Dallas the past three seasons but got just 12 touches last year.

Josh Gordon gets one-year suspension
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(12:40 pm ET) Arbitrator Harold Henderson upheld the one-year suspension for Browns receiver Josh Gordon.

"I'd like to apologize to my teammates, coaches, the Cleveland Browns organization and our fans," Gordon said in a statement. "I am very disappointed that the NFL and its hearing office didn't exercise better discretion and judgment in my case. I would like to sincerely thank the people who have been incredibly supportive of me during this challenging time, including my family, my agent, my union, my legal team, and the Cleveland Browns staff."

Gordon was suspended for a repeat violation of the league's substance abuse policy. He will be considered for reinstatement following the 2014 season, so the suspension might last less than a full calendar year.
