Chiefs activate RB Smith; waive Engram Chiefs activate RB Smith; waive Engram Updated 11/7/2009
Kolby Smith, RB KC
News: The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Saturday that the club has activated RB Kolby Smith from the Reserve/Physically-Unable-to-Perform List. The Chiefs released WR Bobby Engram on Saturday. Analysis: Smith is definitely worth monitoring to see how the Chiefs use him Week 9 at Jacksonville. He might be worth adding off waivers right this instant in deeper Fantasy leagues but you should probably wait elsewhere. Engram does not need to be on rosters right now. He played in five games for Kansas City in 2009, catching five passes for 61 yards.
Clancy placed on injured reserve Clancy placed on injured reserve Updated 11/7/2009
Kendrick Clancy, NT NO
News: The New Orleans Saints have placed defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy on injured reserve with a knee injury and signed defensive tackle DeMario Pressley from the practice squad to the active roster. Analysis: Clancy, a 10th-year player in his third season with the Saints, played in two games and was inactive for five others because of the injury. Both he and Pressley have no Fantasy value at this time.
Boldin to play after all? Boldin to play after all? Updated 11/6/2009
Anquan Boldin, WR ARI
News: Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin was listed as limited in practice Friday as he worked on his sprained ankle and was listed as questionable for Week 9 at Chicago. However, the official team Web site reported that he looked pretty good in practice and didn't appear to have a major setback after re-injuring the ankle last week. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt said Boldin will be a game-time decision based on how he looks in pre-game warmups. The web site speculates that Boldin has a good chance to play Sunday. Analysis: Boldin has been a Fantasy staple in most lineups for weeks, but he hasn't played to expectations at all this season, logging just one touchdown and zero 100-yard games on the year. It seems highly unlikely that he'll snap out of his funk with a sore ankle in Week 9. If he's active, play it safe and consider him a No. 3 Fantasy WR for Week 9 action but consider other options, including the healthier Steve Breaston, before going with Boldin. We'll be first to know whether or not he'll be active this Sunday on Fantasy Football Today, 11 a.m. ET here on CBSSports.com.
McBean officially out for Monday night McBean officially out for Monday night Updated 11/7/2009
Ryan McBean, DE DEN
News: Denver DL Ryan McBean (knee) could not practice all week and has officially been listed as out for Week 9 against Pittsburgh on Monday night. Analysis: McBean is roster depth for the Broncos and often goes without stats or serviceable Fantasy production. Leave him on waivers in all leagues for Week 9 against the Steelers on Monday night.
Barrett upgraded to probable for Week 9 Barrett upgraded to probable for Week 9 Updated 11/7/2009
Josh Barrett, DB DEN
News: Denver DB Josh Barrett (hamstring) was able to practice in full on Saturday after being limited Friday and not practicing at all on Thursday. He is probable and should play Monday night against Pittsburgh. Analysis: Barrett has often been inactive this season and has seen very little statistics while on the field. He's not viable for Fantasy use at this time for Monday night of Week 9.
Timmons doubtful for Monday night Timmons doubtful for Monday night Updated 11/7/2009
Lawrence Timmons, ILB PIT
News: Pittsburgh LB Lawrence Timmons (ankle) missed his third straight day of practice and is listed as doubtful for Week 9 on Monday night at Denver. Analysis: The doctors are trying different techniques to get Timmons ready for Monday night's game, but there is still no certainty if he will be able to start against Denver. It's probably best to use healthier alternatives in Fantasy. Timmons is a No. 3 Fantasy LB when healthy.
Brown misses practice on Friday Brown misses practice on Friday Updated 11/6/2009
Donald Brown, RB IND
News: Colts RB Donald Brown was held out of practice on Friday with a shoulder injury after participating on both Wednesday and Thursday and not being listed on the injury report. He is considered questionable for Week 9 against the Texans. Analysis: Brown was held out Week 8 and it appears that he might have suffered a setback with his shoulder injury as he was held out of practice Friday. His status should be monitored this weekend leading into Sunday's game. IF healthy enough to play, Brown could be useful in deeper formats.
Clark to decide status Monday Clark to decide status Monday Updated 11/7/2009
Ryan Clark, FS PIT
News: The Pittsburgh Steelers won't announce whether safety Ryan Clark will play in Denver until Monday night, although he is not expected to be in uniform. Clark nearly died following a game in Denver two years ago because of a rare blood disorder that is aggravated by playing in high altitude. While Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has not publicly said so, he is believed to have told Clark to sit out the game. Clark had his spleen and gall bladder removed during separate operations and he lost 30 pounds after the Oct. 21, 2007, game in Denver, which ended his season. Many of Clark's teammates told him he should skip the game. Clark is not listed on the Steelers' injury report because he is not hurt and he practiced all week. Analysis: It sounds like Clark will miss the game against the Broncos. The safe option in IDP leagues is to keep Clark reserved and hope he can overcome this illness soon. When healthy, he is a low-end IDP option in all leagues.
Broncos sign veteran DB Law Broncos sign veteran DB Law Updated 11/7/2009
Ty Law, DB NYJ
News: The Denver Broncos have shored up their secondary with another veteran, signing cornerback Ty Law. The 35-year-old Law, who has been to five Pro Bowls, gives the Broncos five players over 30 in the defensive backfield that now sports a combined 20 Pro Bowl selections. To make room, the Broncos waived defensive back Jack Williams. Law's signing also likely means reduced playing time in the nickel and dime packages for rookie Alphonso Smith. Analysis: Law, a 15-year veteran, played seven games with the New York Jets last season and had been training in Florida in case the right team came calling. We can't possibly believe he's going to be much of a Fantasy factor in IDP leagues. Leave him on waivers in all leagues until we're proven wrong. Williams also has no Fantasy value.
Starks placed on IR; Jags add Smith Starks placed on IR; Jags add Smith Updated 11/7/2009
Scott Starks, DB JAC
News: The Jacksonville Jaguars have been awarded fourth-year safety Anthony Smith off waivers from the St. Louis Rams. Jaguars CB Scott Starks was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Analysis: Smith, 6-0, 200, has played in 48 games with 14 starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers and St. Louis, with career totals of 99 tackles, four interceptions and 23 special teams tackles. Smith played in two games for the Rams this season after being claimed off waivers, finishing with five tackles, before he was waived on November 5. Starks played in five of the first seven games for the Jaguars this season and had seven tackles and two special teams tackles. Neither player should be owned in any Fantasy leagues.
Gonzalez has setback with knee Gonzalez has setback with knee Updated 11/6/2009
Anthony Gonzalez, WR IND
News: The Colts announced Friday that wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery Thursday to clean out loose particles. A timetable for his return was not determined by the team, but he's expected to miss at least two more weeks as is typical of arthroscopic surgeries. Gonzalez suffered a recent setback in practice that led to Thursday's procedure. Analysis: We're getting the feeling that Gonzalez is a lost cause for Fantasy owners this season. He'll miss at least another two games for sure, and then who knows how soon he'll be at 100 percent and on the field. If you'd like to keep him and hope that you have him for your Fantasy postseason run, then by all means do it. But if you're competing for a playoff spot in your league, you're doing so without Gonzalez in your lineup from week to week anyway. There could be someone more helpful available on waivers. He's become a low-end reserve with limited upside whose knee injury cost Fantasy owners a season brimming with promise.
Falcons' White to play Sunday Falcons' White to play Sunday Updated 11/6/2009
Roddy White, WR ATL
News: Falcons WR Roddy White was at practice Friday after missing work on Thursday with a knee injury. He's expected to play Sunday vs. the Redskins, said head coach Mike Smith via the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "I anticipate (him) being ready to go on Sunday afternoon," coach Smith said. Analysis: We're not sure how serious the injury is to White's knee, but obviously it's not too bad or else he wouldn't be ready to line up against the Redskins and their tough DBs in Week 9. Consider him a No. 1 Fantasy WR for the coming week's action.
RB Smith looking good for Week 9 RB Smith looking good for Week 9 Updated 11/6/2009
Kevin Smith, RB DET
News: Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said he was "optimistic" that RB Kevin Smith would play in Sunday's game at Seattle after he suffered a shoulder injury last week vs. the Rams, according to the Detroit News. Smith sat out practice on Wednesday but did work on Thursday and Friday. Though he's listed as questionable, Smith is expected to start and lose a handful of carries to backup Maurice Morris. Analysis: Smith will go up against a Seattle defense that surprisingly ranks 10th in the NFL vs. the run, giving up just 101.3 rush yards per game with six touchdowns scored on the ground vs. them this season. Smith is a good enough No. 2 Fantasy RB though he'll probably perform like a No. 3. We'll know his status around 2:45 p.m. ET on Sunday, so check with us before finalizing your Fantasy lineups.
Looks like Lions will get Johnson back Looks like Lions will get Johnson back Updated 11/6/2009
Calvin Johnson, WR DET
News: The Detroit News reports that Lions WR Calvin Johnson practiced again on Friday and appears to be as healthy as can be after missing two games over three weeks with what is believed to be a sprained knee. Lions coach Jim Schwartz wouldn't commit to saying Johnson would play but said he was optimistic. Johnson is listed as questionable for the game. "As long as everything keeps going the way it is the next few days, I'll be all right," Johnson said Friday. Analysis: Johnson might not be at 100 percent, but he'll still be a thorn in the sides of the Seahawks in Week 9. Ease the expectations a bit and consider him a No. 2 Fantasy WR this week since he's coming back from the knee problem, plus he hasn't been a beast for much of the season. Still, you can start him without much worry about him being ruled out on Sunday. If you're looking for that definitive word, we'll know his official status around 2:45 p.m. ET on Sunday, so check with us before finalizing your Fantasy lineups.
Hester expected to play Hester expected to play Updated 11/6/2009
Devin Hester, WR CHI
News: The Chicago Tribune reported that Bears WR Devin Hester is "good to go" for Week 9 vs. Arizona according to head coach Lovie Smith. Hester did take part in practice Friday as he works his way back from a sprained ankle after missing work on Wednesday and Thursday. The paper speculates that Hester might be pulled from special-teams duties to limit his ankle. He is officially listed as questionable for the game. Analysis: Looks like Hester will be all right, but it's always a bit of a risk to start a receiver who depends on his speed after he misses practice time with a lower-body injury. Figure Hester will contribute but not to the level you might think against the Cardinals' secondary. Treat him like a No. 3 Fantasy WR and definitely consider other options before settling on Hester in Week 9.
Westbrook rests but should play Westbrook rests but should play Updated 11/6/2009
Brian Westbrook, RB PHI
News: Eagles coach Andy Reid said Friday that the team opted to rest Westbrook Friday after two days of practice. Westbrook is working his way back from a concussion suffered two weeks ago at Washington. The Eagles are listing Westbrook as questionable, but all indications at this point are that he will play on Sunday against the Cowboys. "I held him out because he had two hard days of work and took a ton of reps," Reid said. Analysis: Expect Westbrook to see the bigger piece of the rushing pie against the Cowboys, though rookie runner LeSean McCoy will also get in some work. Dallas is toward the middle of the pack when it comes to run defense but they've given up just three rushing touchdowns on the year. Consider Westbrook a No. 2 Fantasy RB and McCoy a low-end No. 3 choice.
Maroney's matchup getting easier? Maroney's matchup getting easier? Updated 11/6/2009
Laurence Maroney, RB NE
News: Patriots RB Laurence Maroney will take on the Dolphins in Week 9 potentially without two of their best run stoppers. LB Channing Crowder and DT Jason Ferguson are both listed as doubtful for the game after being limited in practice this week. The Patriots have given the ball to Maroney a healthy amount over the last two weeks with RBs Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris sidelined. He's had at least 14 touches in each game with 29 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns in those games. Maroney didn't play vs. Miami last year but did rack up 156 yards and a touchdown in his last game against them in 2007. Analysis: Maroney was an iffy No. 2 Fantasy RB before this news, but assuming those defenders are out for the Dolphins, you can feel good about starting the Pats' back in Week 9 in that slot. We'll know more about Maroney and his matchup on Sunday before kickoff of the game.
Rodgers hurting but should play Rodgers hurting but should play Updated 11/6/2009
Aaron Rodgers, QB GB
News: Packers QB Aaron Rodgers practiced Friday as he works his way into shape after spraining a foot and spraining a toe on his other foot last week. He missed practice earlier in the week but should be fine for Week 9 at Tampa Bay after taking his normal reps on Friday. He is probable for Week 9. "He did everything," head coach Mike McCarthy said of his quarterback. "He did the play-action, did the movements, the drop back. He took a full day's work. ... He's hurting, but I don't have any concerns." Analysis: Expect Rodgers to play and put up good numbers against the Buccaneers in Week 9. His offensive line should be a little bit better after the team got back two veterans in practice this week. Rodgers played at Tampa Bay last season and threw two touchdowns -- and three interceptions -- with just 165 passing yards. But the Bucs' pass rush is tame, the secondary is weak and thus shouldn't provide much of a challenge. For now, plan to start Rodgers in Week 9.
Driver practices, 'feels good' Driver practices, 'feels good' Updated 11/6/2009
Donald Driver, WR GB
News: Packers WR Donald Driver practiced Friday in preparation for the team's Week 9 game at Tampa Bay after missing two days of work with a neck issue. Head coach Mike McCarthy sounded optimistic about his receiver's chances to play against the Bucs, which was made clear when the team listed him as probable. "Donald had a good practice today," McCarthy said Friday. "He feels good." Analysis: Expect Driver to play on Sunday against the Bucs in a matchup that's pretty good for him. Not only is Tampa Bay bad against the pass, but the Packers' offensive line has added some veterans that should hold up and protect Aaron Rodgers, who is healthy enough to play. Consider Driver a No. 2 Fantasy WR for Week 9 action.
Schaub to face weakened Colts DBs Schaub to face weakened Colts DBs Updated 11/6/2009
Matt Schaub, QB HOU
News: With the Colts losing CB Marlin Jackson and SS Bob Sanders for the season as well as starting CB Kelvin Hayden for a month, Texans QB Matt Schaub might be in line to have a better than expected game against Indy's backups in Week 9. Schaub was mediocre in his only meeting with the Colts in his career (236 yards, one TD, two INTs in early 2007), but he played them without WR Andre Johnson. Now he'll get them with Johnson, but without tight end Owen Daniels, who is lost for the season himself with a torn ACL. Analysis: Schaub will throw against the likes of Tim Jennings, Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey. There's no question that he'll find Andre Johnson for significant gains against Indy's fairly inexperienced cornerbacks. We even chronicled Schaub's games with Daniels as a limited participant and found him and Johnson to be effective. Count on Schaub in Week 9 as a No. 1 Fantasy QB.
