Terrance West keeps applying pressure on Ben Tate
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/27/14) Browns running backs Ben Tate and Terrance West both had their moments in Sunday's practice, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. But West "continued to look more explosive and seemed to dole out more punishment," the paper said.

The two are vying for the starting job. While Tate said he has no doubt he's the team's best option, the paper noted "people watching training camp on Sunday may not feel the same."

Ben Tate vs. Terrance West is Browns' 'best competition'
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(7/23/14) Browns coach Mike Pettine told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the "the best competition [in camp] might be Ben Tate and our guy Terrance West from Towson, who I really like." West is a 5-10, 225-pounder who has consistently impressed in offseason drills.

Even if Tate holds off the rookie, West is in line for substantial work.

Terrance West a legit threat to Ben Tate's job
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(7/20/14) Terrance West has looked like anything but a small school rookie running back through the Browns' offseason practices. According to ClevelandBrowns.com's Vic Carucci, "it wouldn't be the least bit surprising" if West ousted Ben Tate from the starting role to begin the season. Carucci also suggests that West could see a significant amount of work even if Tate starts.

Tate totaled 911 yards and four touchdowns for the Texans last year but dealt with rib injuries that ultimately cost him the last few games of the season. At Towson last year, West had 2,509 yards rushing last season with a ridiculous 41 touchdowns.

Mike Pettine declares committee approach in backfield
by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/28/14) Despite the signing of free agent Ben Tate in the offseason, the Browns are planning on using a running back-by-committee approach this season.

"I think in the AFC North, you have to be running back by committee," Mike Pettine told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "You'd like to have a guy that can carry most of the load, but also be able to alternate guys ... you've got to be able to get fresh guys out there."

That "guy who can carry most of the load" will likely be Tate, but rookie third-rounder Terrance West has been particularly impressive in his early work, as has Edwin Baker. The Browns also have Dion Lewis, who is coming off a lost season due to a broken leg, left over from last year.

Ben Tate not worried about competition
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/12/14) Browns running back Ben Tate isn't worried about any competition for the starting job from rookie Terrance West, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

"Truthfully, I don't look at it like that," Tate said. "You guys may see it like that, but there's nobody in that room that scares me. I'm just honest."

Tate said competing for playing time with Arian Foster in Houston has him prepared.

"If I come in here and say 'Oh I've got this locked down' and don't compete, that's how you lose your job," he said. "That's how you find your way out of the league fast. I'm a natural competitor. That's just in me. I went out there in Houston every day and tried to compete with Arian knowing I wasn't going to be the starter no matter what I did because he had already done things. So I'm going to naturally compete and I hope all the other running backs want to compete as well. As a group that's how we're going to get better as a unit."

Tate has spent time behind West in practice because, as coach Mike Pettine told the Akron Beacon Journal, he "was a little nicked up during minicamp." He is expected to be fine for the start of training camp.
