Browns might not use three running backs Week 8

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/22/14) Browns coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday the team might not use three running backs Week 8 against the Raiders after Ben Tate, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West had trouble getting into the flow of the game during a Week 7 loss at Jacksonville.

Crowell and West both admitted their limited reps impacted how they performed Sunday, according to The Plain Dealer.

"We'll make a decision at the end of the week,'' Pettine said. "I don't want to lock it in and say we're set on three.''

Rude awakening for Ben Tate

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/19/14) After two big performances in which he carried the ball more than 20 times, Browns running back Ben Tate seemed poised for his biggest performance yet Week 7 at Jacksonville. After all, he was facing a winless Jaguars team that was used to trailing big. As much as the Browns like to give him the ball, he figured to own the second half.

Except the Jaguars never trailed big in this one. In fact, at least in the second half, they never trailed at all. Because they were the ones to win in convincing fashion, Tate got only six carries in the second half and gained only 3 yards with them. In all, he had 36 yards on 16 carries.

Granted, if the score had allowed him to get his usual allotment of carries, he would have done better, but for the number of carries he did get, his performance wasn't up to snuff. His two touchdowns masked it Week 6 against Pittsburgh, but that's two games in a row now in which he struggled on a per-carry basis. His combined rate for those two games is 2.8 yards per carry.

Backup running backs Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West got a combined 12 carries in this one, so Tate's role may not be rock solid. Of course, since they didn't do much with theirs either, it likely isn't in jeopardy. Because he gets so many opportunities, Tate remains an advisable play for Week 8 against Oakland.

Browns RB trio arrives in Jacksonville hot, leaves cold

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/19/14) The three-headed monster that had the Browns ranked third in the NFL in rushing yards heading into the Sunday game at Jacksonville was stopped cold by the Jaguars.

Ben Tate, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West combined for just 62 yards in 29 attempts for a meager 2.1 average.

Tate ran for 36 yards on 16 tries, but was held to 18 yards on 15 attempts aside from an 18-yard jaunt up the middle in the second quarter. Crowell managed 18 yards on seven tries while West added just eight yards in five attempts.

Browns RB Ben Tate fine for Week 7 game at Jacksonville

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/19/14) The Browns have given the thumbs-up, as expected, to featured back Ben Tate for the Sunday clash against the Jaguars. He had been designated as probable with a lingering finger issue.

Quartet ruled out by Browns for Sunday game

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/17/14) A lengthy Browns injury report issued Friday features four players ruled out for the Week 7 game in Jacksonville. Included are cornerback K'Waun Williams (concussion), wideout Rodney Smith (hamstring) and defensive linemen Phil Taylor (knee) and Billy Winn (quad).

Listed as questionable are defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin (ankle) and free safety Tashaun Gipson (thigh). The probables are defensive end Desmond Bryant (wrist), linebackers Barkevious Mingo (shoulder) and Paul Kruger (back) and featured back Ben Tate (finger).
