Ben Tate continues troubling trend

by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(10/26/14) Browns running back Ben Tate made up for a subpar game overall in Week 8, as he scored a late touchdown in a 23-13 win over the Raiders.

Tate rushed for just 26 yards on 15 carries, and was a nonfactor in the passing game, so the touchdown turned out to be pretty important for Fantasy owners. With a couple of young running backs on the roster possibly pushing him for playing time, a subpar effort isn't good to see, however, Terrance West rushed for just 11 yards on seven carries himself Sunday, so there doesn't seem to be much reason to think Tate cost himself.

Tate has averaged 3.1 yards per carry or less in three straight games, so this continues a unfortunate trend. Still, he had 124 yards on 22 carries in his first game back from a knee injury, so there is little reason to think this is a lingering issue.

It is probably fair to chalk this up to a slump and assume Tate will turn things around, perhaps as soon as Week 9 against a Buccaneers team that is allowing the fifth-most Fantasy points to opposing running backs in the league.

Touchdown lone Sunday highlight for Browns RB Ben Tate

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/26/14) Browns featured back Ben Tate now has just 61 yards rushing in his last 32 attempts, courtesy of a 16-for-25 effort Sunday against Oakland. But he did soothe his frustrations a bit with 2:26 remaining in the game.

That's when Tate found a hole up the middle for his third touchdown of the season. He also caught one pass for eight yards in the Cleveland victory. His recent struggles mirror those of the entire backfield since center Alex Mack was knocked out for the season with a broken leg.

Tate will try to get the ground game back on track when the Browns host the Buccaneers in Week 9.

Browns looking for a back to 'separate himself'

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/23/14) Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said the team is looking for one running back to "separate himself," according to ESPN.

Shanahan stressed that he's been happy with the play of Ben Tate, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West, but added that he would love it if one of them stepped up. "We got a bunch of solid guys who do a good job," Shanahan said. "For one of those to get the bulk of the carries and take off, then that’s up to them. They got to show us they’re ahead of the other guys."

Shanahan has had a history of riding one primary back in the past. "I’ve never had to rotate a bunch of running backs, because usually I’ve had a running back who’s usually able to separate himself from the others," he said.

Tate is currently receiving the bulk of the carries for the club, but the team has mixed in Crowell and West frequently.

Rebound seems likely for Ben Tate

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/23/14) With what seemed like a tailor-made matchup Week 7 at Jacksonville, Browns running back Ben Tate had by far his worst performance in three games since returning from a knee injury, gaining just 36 yards on 16 carries. So is he still a safe bet with what seems like another favorable matchup Week 8 against Oakland?

Well, as safe as any non-pass catching back can be in today's NFL. If the Browns fall behind by a couple scores, as unexpectedly happened against the Jaguars, he'll disappear from the game plan. But of course, the Browns have been competitive in every other game this season, so you have no reason to believe they won't be against a winless Raiders team.

And the numbers all work in Tate's favor. The Raiders rank 29th against the run, allowing 145.3 yards per game, and have given up the third-most Fantasy points per game to running backs. Andre Ellington and Branden Oliver have performed nicely against them the last two weeks.

Jamey Eisenberg and Dave Richard both rank Tate about 15th among running backs despite the disappointment of last week, and I'm with them. I don't see a scenario where I sit him.

Browns might not use three running backs Week 8

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(10/22/14) Browns coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday the team might not use three running backs Week 8 against the Raiders after Ben Tate, Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West had trouble getting into the flow of the game during a Week 7 loss at Jacksonville.

Crowell and West both admitted their limited reps impacted how they performed Sunday, according to The Plain Dealer.

"We'll make a decision at the end of the week,'' Pettine said. "I don't want to lock it in and say we're set on three.''
