C.J. Spiller expecting 'March Madness' style free agency
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(1/26/15) Bills running back C.J. Spiller is getting healthy again. Spiller, who has fully recovered from a shoulder injury, just ended the final season of his contract and is looking at his options for next season.
"Physically, I’m back to 100 percent, back to doing normal activities," Spiller told The Post and Courier on Friday. "As far as football, free agency will start in March, and I’ll get with my people next week and get a game plan together."
Spiller has played five seasons for the Bills, only playing two full years. He ran for 1,244 yards in 2012 with six touchdowns.
"I guess you could say it’ll be March Madness," Spiller said with a smile. "It’ll be a fun March."
C.J. Spiller: Playing for Chan Gailey 'would be a perfect match'
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(1/16/15) While the Bills are interested in re-signing running back C.J. Spiller, they might receive serious competition from AFC East foe N.Y. Jets in trying to sign the 27-year-old running back.
That's because it appears the Jets are set to hire former Bills coach Chan Gailey as offensive coordinator, and Spiller had the best season of his career playing under Gailey in 2012. Spiller rushed for 1,244 yards, while totaling 459 receiving yards and eight touchdowns (six rushing) in Gailey's final season as coach in '12.
“There is that familiarity between me and him in that offense,” Spiller told the New York Daily News on Thursday. “So that would be a perfect match. Who knows what can happen, but I’d be foolish not to have those guys on my list. I had my best years in the league with Chan. So it’d be dumb not to give it serious thought.
“When you look at guys on that roster, Chan’s going to find ways to get those guys the ball and move them around. That’s the thing that I love. He loves moving his guys around so they can keep defenses off balance.”
GM: Bills will do their 'darndest' to re-sign C.J. Spiller
|by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com|
|(1/15/15) Bills general manager Doug Whaley told WGR 550 the team will make a concerted effort to re-sign impending free agent running back C.J. Spiller, reports the team's website.
"We’re going to try to do our darndest to get this guy in the fold and get him back,” said Whaley. “I’m sure he’s disappointed with how last year went with the injuries, but we want him to come back with us and get back to the form we know he can play at.”
New coach Rex Ryan is already friends with Spiller. Ryan's son plays football at Clemson, Spiller's alma mater.
“I’ve met C.J. and obviously I have a great deal of respect for him having to try to stop him and things,” Ryan said. “One thing I think that he’s going to understand about me is I’m going to tell him what I believe to be the truth. All players seem to appreciate that.”
Spiller averaged 3.8 yards per carry in nine games this season and scored one total touchdown.
Bills' running game sputters vs. Raiders in Week 16
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(12/21/14) The Bills managed just 13 yards on 13 carries as a team in Sunday's 26-24 loss to the Raiders in Week 16, with running back Fred Jackson leading the team with 10 yards on six carries.
It was an absolutely abysmal game from the Bills' rushing attack with the team's season on the line. Jackson did serve as the team's leading receiver, catching nine passes on 12 targets for 93 yards, giving him his first game with more than 100 yards from scrimmage since Week 5. Anthony Dixon rushed for seven yards on three carries.
C.J. Spiller returned from a stay on injured reserve but struggled mightily in his limited playing time. He lost four yards on four carries and added four receptions for 14 yards, putting the ball on the turf once but recovering his own fumble.
The Bills head to New England for the regular-season finale next Sunday.
C.J. Spiller among Bills probables active vs. Raiders
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(12/21/14) Bills running back C.J. Spiller (shoulder) is among the team's players listed as probable who are active for Sunday's game against the Raiders.
Spiller is making his return from injured reserve and will be playing in his first game since Week 7. Also active after being listed as probable are safeties Da'Norris Searcy (hamstring) and Duke Williams (concussion), cornerback Stephon Gilmore (shoulder), defensive end Jarius Wynn (knee), running back Anthony Dixon (chest), wide receiver Marcus Thigpen (foot) and kicker Dan Carpenter (groin).
The Bills are a 6 1/2-point favorite for Sunday's road matchup with the Raiders.
|C.J. Spiller was among the biggest busts in 2013. He was drafted as a first-round pick in the majority of leagues, but Spiller finished as the No. 27 running back in standard formats. He was outplayed by Fred Jackson, who was No. 10 in Fantasy points, and Spiller had trouble dealing with an ankle injury and likely unrealistic expectations. This season, Spiller has the chance to rebound, and we consider him a No. 2 Fantasy running back compared to a No. 1 option. If healthy, Spiller can still flash the skills that helped him dominate in 2012 when he had 1,700 total yards and eight touchdowns (he had just 1,100 yards and two touchdowns last year). Jackson will remain a detractor with the two still sharing touches, and the Bills also added Bryce Brown via trade, but the Bills want Spiller to shine based on his playmaking ability. You should plan to target Spiller as early as Round 3, but hopefully he can fall to Round 4 and present better value. If things go his way like they did two years ago then your Fantasy team will be in great shape. Otherwise, if he plays like last year, at least you didn't make another steep investment and his struggles won't be as difficult to digest.
