Preseason Outlook

Batch re-signs with Steelers: Backup quarterback Charlie Batch returned to the Steelers by signing an $895,000, one-year contract that includes a $50,000 signing bonus. The move was expected because Batch has been working out with the Steelers since missing last season with a broken right collarbone. Byron Leftwich replaced Batch as Ben Roethlisberger's backup, but he signed a two-year deal with Tampa Bay. Batch has been the Steelers' primary backup since signing with the Steelers in 2002. He has played in 22 games since then, starting four times.

Fantasy Analysis

Batch won't sniff the field unless Ben Roethlisberger is hurt. But after last season, chances are we'll see Batch at some point quarterbacking the Steelers. Ultimately, he's not worth a draft pick in any league.

Charlie Batch missed the entire 2008 season after being placed on injured reserve with a broken collarbone in the preseason. In mid-April, he signed a contract to resume his role as the backup QB for the Steelers behind Ben Roethlisberger. It's safe to ignore Batch in all leagues, and he would only be worth adding off the waiver wire if Big Ben ever got hurt or missed significant playing time. (Updated 4/16/09)
