Donald Brown doesn't look like the answer
by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(9/29/14) Though he picked up only 62 yards on an absurd 31 carries Week 3 at Buffalo, some Fantasy owners held out hope that Chargers running back Donald Brown could deliver more as Ryan Mathews' replacement Week 4 vs. Jacksonville. After all, he was going against the league's 32nd-ranked run defense.

He couldn't. On a per-carry basis, the performance was much like the one he had at Buffalo, only the Chargers didn't let it go on for 31 carries this time, sprinkling in rookie Branden Oliver for much of their last few possessions.

Quarterback Philip Rivers carried the offense in this one, completing 29 of 39 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns, and judging by Brown's performance through two starts, that figures to be the case until Mathews returns.

Especially now that Oliver has gotten involved, Brown is no more than a desperation option in Fantasy.

Chargers get nothing in the run game Week 4
by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(9/28/14) The Chargers running backs did nothing Week 4 against the Jaguars.

Branden Oliver actually led the way in yardage, picking up 23 yards on nine carries. Donald Brown received 10 carries, but only gained 19 yards. Oliver had the longest run of the game, coming in at 7 yards. Both players played a bigger role in the passing game. Brown hauled in four passes for 25 yards. Oliver also caught four balls, picking up 33 yards.

Both players will look for more Week 5 against the Jets.

Taking a look at the top running backs on the waiver-wire
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/23/14) With a ton of running backs on bye or dealing with injuries, the field is thin for Week 4. And, the potential replacements available on the waiver-wire aren't exactly standouts, with Jamey Eisenberg tabbing Ravens back Lorenzo Taliaferro and Donald Brown of the Chargers as the top pickups for the week.

How will the Chargers replace Danny Woodhead?
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/22/14) With do-everything running back Danny Woodhead reportedly out for an extensive period of time, the Chargers find themselves looking to plug some major holes in the backfield. Though Donald Brown did a serviceable Ryan Mathews impression while carrying a truly massive load in Week 3 against the Bills, Woodhead's absence leaves the team searching for another dimension.

Among the players on the depth chart, neither Brown nor reserve Branden Oliver seems likely to replicate Woodhead's skillset -- few players in the NFL can. Brown's career-high in receptions came a year ago, when he hauled in 27 passes for the Colts -- that's about four good games of work from Woodhead. Oiliver is likely to see a larger role than the three carries he received in Week 3, and he might be the nearest thing the team has to what Woodhead leaves behind.

Oliver had just 25 receptions as a senior at the University of Buffalo, but was a much more productive receiver earlier in his career. He hauled in 38 passes for 365 yards as a sophomore in 2011, good for third on the team in both categories, so he has some skills as a receiver.

With just three carries and no receptions under his belt in his NFL career, Oliver is very much an unknown quantity at this point. You won't want to rush out and add him this week, but keep an eye on how the team utilizes him in Week 4 against the Jaguars, a matchup which could get him plenty of work.

Injuries push Donald Brown into big role
by Chris Towers | CBSSports.com
(9/21/14) Chargers running back Donald Brown played a larger-than-expected role in Week 3 against the Bills, as another member of the running-back corps was forced from the game with an injury.

Brown, who was expected to play more following Ryan Mathews' knee injury last week, was the workhorse Sunday after Danny Woodhead left the game. He ran the ball a career-high 31 times in the game, but managed just 62 yards on the ground. He added five receptions on 27 yards in the 20-10 win.

Mathews is already expected to miss a handful of weeks with the injury, and it looks like Woodhead might be out a while after he was carted off. The Chargers are set to take on the Jaguars in Week 4.
