Preseason Outlook

Toomer finishes with dud Sunday: Giants WR Amani Toomer made two grabs for 26 yards as New York was bounced from the playoffs on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles advance to the NFC title game as the Giants, the defending Super Bowl champs, go home. The Giants amassed just 169 yards through the air and struggled without Plaxico Burress, losing four of their final five games.

Fantasy Analysis

Toomer's production didn't exactly step up when Burress went out Week 11. He finished the season with 48 catches for 580 yards and four touchdowns and will be entering his 14th NFL season next year. Toomer is scheduled to be a free agent heading into the '09 season, so his Fantasy status can't be certain until we know where he'll be, but chances are he won't be better than a reserve option.

Beware of drafting Super Bowl losers
Sure, recent history suggests that the Super Bowl loser shouldn't expect to make the playoffs the following season. However, as Jamey Eisenberg writes, losing the Super Bowl also has a negative impact on Fantasy the following season. Just ask Tom Brady.

Amani Toomer's production continued to decline in 2008 as he caught 48 passes for 580 yards with four touchdowns. Given the opportunity to play well late in the year with Plaxico Burress out, Toomer scored only two touchdowns and only once had more than 35 yards in a game. Toomer is now a free agent and will likely land with a club interested in using him for his hands and size. He'll also be a 14-year NFL veteran. He won't be any better than a reserve Fantasy WR in deeper 2009 formats, making him at best a late-round pick in the deepest of leagues. (Updated 3/17/09)
