Cowboys backup QB Brandon Weeden praised for improvement

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/15/15) The chances of backup quarterback Brandon Weeden doing much besides carrying the clipboard for the Cowboys this year is virtually nil unless Tony Romo goes down. But that hasn't stopped him from making quite a jump in the offseason.

Weeden is finally experiencing some continuity. This marks the first time he has been with the same offense under the same coordinator in successive seasons. He has gained a level of comfort and it shows.

"I think he's probably the most improved player," quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson told ESPN. "He has a great understanding of the concepts, of the protections, calling the plays, all those things. He's made a big jump this year."

The quarterback concurs. "Now I can really fine tune what we're doing because I'm not having to go home to study for three hours just learning plays and calling plays and doing all that," he said. "Now I can ... work on reading defenses, work on understanding everything versus just making sure I don't screw the first part of it up. I appreciate that from [Wilson]. That's a good comment because I busted by ass."

Weeden started one of four games in which he played last season. He completed 24 of 41 passes for 303 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Report: Cowboys not interested in trading for Browns Johnny Manziel

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(4/30/15) If the Browns trade for Sam Bradford or select a quarterback near the top of the draft, it would likely mean that the team is ready to cut ties with Johnny Manziel

However, the Cowboys, who considered drafting Manziel in the first round last year, wouldn't pursue a trade for the troubled quarterback.

ESPN's Ed Werder reported that the Cowboys aren't interested in trading for Manziel. The team will stick with Brandon Weeden as backup quarterback.

Cowboys: No guarantees for Brandon Weeden

by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com
(2/19/15) The Cowboys were happy with backup QB Brandon Weeden, but that won't stop the team from looking to upgrade if the opportunity presents itself.

Coach Jason Garrett and executive VP Stephen Jones spoke about Weeden on Thursday.

"Brandon did a really nice job in his opportunities," Garrett said. "We still feel like he's a young player who needs to play more. He's really growing before our eyes."

Despite that, Garrett said, "You're always trying to upgrade your football team."

Jones agreed with the sentiment. "Everybody is always competing in this league," he said. “There is nobody guaranteed anything. That includes Weeden and everybody. ... My goal is to always -- if we can - bring in another player and if makes more sense, we have to look at it."

Cowboys leaving door open to adding veteran QB?

by Igor Mello | CBSSports.com
(2/19/15) Although the Cowboys are reportedly pleased with Brandon Weeden, coach Jason Garrett told reporters he's still leaving the door open to adding a veteran this offseason, per ESPN.

Weeden, 31, is entering the final year of his contract. Last season, he passed for 303 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions while filling in for Romo when he was sidelined with two transverse process fractures. Dustin Vaughan, an undrafted free agent in 2014, was also active for one game last season.

"You're always trying to upgrade your football team," Garrett said. "Obviously, we feel really good about Tony. He had an outstanding year for us last year. Brandon did a really nice job in his opportunities. If you look at what he did -- he played in (four) games, (three) he came in relief for us and the one game he started we didn't play our best game on offense. But it was against a really good defensive team in Arizona. We still feel like he's a young player who needs to play more. He's really growing before our eyes.

"We like what Dustin Vaughn did in the preseason. He is a smart kid. He is really conscientious. He wants to be a good football player and works very hard at it. He's one of those guys, too, a young player and you can see him get better with every rep that he gets. He is going about it the right way. We think he's got a future."

Cowboys' Brandon Weeden gets vote of confidence

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(2/19/15) Cowboys backup quarterback Brandon Weeden received a vote of confidence from coach Jason Garrett, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Weeden appeared in five games with the club last year, tossing three touchdowns against two interceptions. He completed 58.5 percent of his passes and threw for 303 yards. Despite the less than stellar performance, Weeden received a vote of confidence from Garrett.

"Brandon did a really nice job in his opportunities," Garrett said. "If you look at what he did - he played in three games, two he came in relief for us and the one game he started we didn't play our best game on offense. But it was against a really good defensive team in Arizona." He added, "we still feel like he's a young player who needs to play more. He's really growing before our eyes."

Weeden, 31, isn't necessarily a young prospect, but didn't begin playing in the NFL until he was 28.
