Texans QB Ryan Mallett: I'm ready to go

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/12/15) Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett finally got his chance to start in the league last season. Unfortunately, his starting opportunity was cut short after three games when he tore a pectoral muscle. Mallet said on Monday he's finally back to healthy after rehabbing the injury, according to ESPN.com.

"I'm ready to go," Mallet replied. "I'm still getting better every day. I don't feel any restrictions. It's about me. It's about managing and being smart with my body. Just doing the right thing as we progress. I need to play in August, September, and those months. Not April right now, you know?"

Mallet is expected to split first team reps with newcomer Brian Hoyer in OTAs at quarterback.

Texans' Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett to split reps at QB during OTAs

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(5/12/15) Texans quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett are expected to split first-team reps under center during offseason team activities this summer, according to the team's website.

"It's not new -- for me, it's kind of just getting back on the bike," Hoyer said Monday. "You learn to ride a bike and whether you don't ride it for a year or two, you can pick it up pretty quickly. There's some adjustments, especially with (George) Godsey being the offensive coordinator. It's been a great three weeks so far of getting re-acclimated and learning the nuances that he's kind of put his own spin on."

Hoyer threw for 3,326 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2014 with the Browns.

"For me, I'm kind of re-acclimating myself, so we're all kind of learning together," Hoyer said. "We've put a lot of extra work in after our workouts, whether it's going in the film room and looking at formations or going over concepts. I think that's really helped me and it's helped those guys, too. Especially in this offense, you're asked to do so much, so if you can do without thinking, it speeds up the process that much more."

Mallett threw for 400 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in three games for Houston before suffering a season-ending pectoral injury.

O'Brien happy with current QB situation with Texans

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(5/1/15) Bill O'Brien expressed disdain for a question Thursday night inferring that the Texans are still seeking their franchise quarterback.

"You know, 'until we find our quarterback' like I just want to make sure that just personally I'm clear on that," he said via ESPN. "We feel really good about our quarterback position. To be honest with you, I'm a little tired of hearing that."

The thought of the Texans addressing the situation in the first round seems a bit far-fetched when considering that premier talents Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were gone after two picks and no other top candidates were thought of that highly.

Houston is set to wage a competition between Ryan Mallett and free agent signing Brian Hoyer for the starting job. O'Brien is not complaining about that.

"These guys are in here competing," he said. "They're learning. They're doing a good job so far in the offseason workouts. We can't wait to get out there and start working with them."

Brian Hoyer signing with Texans for two years, $10 million

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(3/11/15) Former Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer will sign a two-year, $10 million deal with the Texans on Wednesday, reports CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora. Hoyer will receive $4.75 million guaranteed, La Canfora said.

Hoyer will compete with Ryan Mallett to be Houston's starter. Hoyer, 29, completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 3,326 yards and 12 touchdowns with 13 interceptions in 14 games with Cleveland last season.

Report: Texans release QB Thad Lewis
