Bills HC Rex Ryan says QB competition to be open

by Dave Peters | CBSSports.com
(3/21/15) Bills head coach Rex Ryan has options at the quarterback spot going into the 2015 season. There will be competition for the starting spot this offseason.

“It’s going to be open,” Ryan told WGR radio, via the team’s official website.  “It’s a competition and whoever earns the job will be the guy that’s out there.”

The Bills currently have four quarterbacks on their roster including Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel. Ryan brokedown what each signal caller brings to the table.

“We have some talented guys and we’ll see what happens,” Ryan said.  “You bring in a veteran like Matt Cassel.  He’s done some pretty good things in this league.  He’s got that veteran presence about him.  With EJ back there just going into his third year I really believe EJ is going to improve with his fundamentals having [quarterbacks coach] David Lee here.  I love the fact that he’s a gym rat and he’s smart.  With our offense being multiple we’ll be able to get out of bad plays, so the mental part of it all of the quarterbacks we have should be able to handle that.

“With Taylor that’s going to be a young man, he’s probably the fastest quarterback in the league,” Ryan said.  “He’s explosive running the zone reads, and we’ll see where he’s at.  Then Tuel.  We’ve got guys there to work with.  That’ll be the important thing.  There will be competition, but a person has to earn the job.  It hasn’t been handed to somebody.”

Bills QB Tyrod Taylor in three-way battle to start

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(3/15/15) Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor turned down more money in free agency to join the Bills, where he'll have the opportunity to compete for a starting job, NFL.com reports.

"There is going to be a competition," Taylor said. "No one is really ahead of the other guy right now. They're looking forward to us coming in and pushing each other to make this team better."

The Bills view Taylor as a zone-read possibility similar to the role 2013 first-round pick EJ Manuel was supposed to fill. Head coach Rex Ryan actually indicated he tried to acquire Taylor during his previous job.

"I actually tried to trade for (Taylor) when I was with the Jets," Ryan told CJCL in Toronto. "If he's not the fastest quarterback in the league, he's certainly up there with them. He's got great run skills. I'm not gonna say he's Russell Wilson, but he's got a little of that in him, where he's able to run zone-reads and pull the ball down and be effective."

Taylor, Manuel and offseason acquisition Matt Cassel are set to compete for the team's starting quarterback job heading into the 2015 season.

QB Matt Cassel: 'The foot feels great right now'

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/11/15) New Bills quarterback Matt Cassel told the team's website he expects to participate fully when offseason practices begin. Playing for Minnesota last year, Cassel fractured bones in his foot Week 3, an injury that required surgery.

"The foot feels great right now,” Cassel said. “Everything has been going well with all my rehab up to this point and it was a severe foot injury at that point. I’m at about 22 weeks removed from the injury so I feel great. I’m doing exercises. I’ve been dropping back and throwing and everything else, and running so I feel good to go.”

Cassel will compete with EJ Manuel for the starting job.

Bills acquire QB Matt Cassel for draft picks

by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/4/15) The Bills announced they've acquired quarterback Matt Cassel from the Vikings. Buffalo also will receive one undisclosed draft pick while giving away two undisclosed draft picks.

Cassel, 32, won the starting job in Minnesota last year but suffered a season-ending foot injury Week 3 that required surgery.

Cassel is signed for this season at $4.15 million. He'll compete with EJ Manuel and possibly otheres for the starting job in Buffalo.

The trade won't be finalized until the new league year begins next Tuesday.

Rex Ryan: 'Would be nice' to have great QB, 'excited' about Manuel

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(2/18/15) Bills coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday that it "would be nice" to have a great quarterback but that he's "excited" about EJ Manuel, ESPN.com reports.

"I think this league has proven that when you have a great quarterback, you almost -- it's rare that you don't go to the playoffs with a great quarterback," Ryan said. "So obviously that's a priority and not just for our team, but any team in this league. But it's a lot easier said than done.

"It would be nice to get somebody like that. I'm not saying that we have that situation right now. I'm excited about EJ Manuel, though, I'll tell you that much. He's a young man that has some potential. We'll see how that pans out."

Ryan also acknowledged the team's meeting with free-agent quarterback Josh McCown.

"We did bring Josh in," Ryan said. "So obviously there's some interest there on our part. We wanted to bring him in, just to get to know this young man and also for him to get to know us. I'm excited about our coaching staff, and I think that's probably the best selling point that I have right now, along with the players that we have. Obviously, we got an outstanding group of players, too, that I like to show off to a lot of guys."

Manuel and Jeff Tuel are the only two quarterbacks on the Bills' roster.
