Bills QB EJ Manuel adds weight as way to improve
|by Ruben Palacios | Staff Writer|
|(5/30/15) Bills quarterback EJ Manuel is in the middle of a three-way competition for the starting job in Buffalo, but he's hoping that the weight he added during the offseason will help him get the starting nod, per The Buffalo News.
Manuel estimates he gained eight to 10 pounds of muscle during the offseason with the intention of staying healthy -- he missed six games as a rookie in 2013 due to injury.
“I feel a lot better this way,” Manuel siad. “I still feel like I’m quick and fast and able to move around. I think that’s just about being durable and obviously being able to take a full season.”
With Tyrod Taylor and Matt Cassel competing alongside him to become the starting quarterback this year, Manuel feels he has a great chance to come out the top guy.
"I feel like I’m right there in the mix, so I’ve just got to go out every day and get better," Manuel said.
Manuel threw for 838 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions in five games last season.
GM: EJ Manuel on 'equal footing' with Bills' other QBs
|by Shawn Krest | CBSSports.com|
|(5/23/15) Bills general manager Doug Whaley denied reports that the team is moving on from quarterback EJ Manuel.
The team acquired Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor in the offseason.
In an interview with Jim Rome, Whaley said, "I look at it this way, in this business controversy sells,. The more controversy that you can drum up then the more intereste people are going to be."
"For us we’re excited about the future of all three of those guys," Whaley said. "It’s going to be a great competition. And we can keep three quarterbacks. So I dismiss that as just someone trying to get something stirred during this down time and lack of media stories for the NFL."
Whaley said all three quarterbacks have an equal shot of winning the starting job.
"I look for him to come in and compete and try to take the job," he said. "Everybody has got an equal footing. It’s a clean slate for all four of our quarterbacks. We’re not tied to anybody. We just want the best man to start."
Greg Roman: EJ Manuel still in Bills' plans
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(5/19/15) Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman responded to a report that quarterback EJ Manuel could be released before the season, saying that the notion that Manuel has fallen out of favor in Buffalo is the "furthest thing from the truth," the Buffalo News reports.
Roman also indicated that anyone can step up and earn the starting quarterback job.
Manuel is expected to be involved in a three-way quarterback battle during camp with Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor. He's completed 58.6 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,810 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 15 games as a pro.
Report: Bills QB EJ Manuel could be out if he doesn't improve
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(5/18/15) The Bills could dump quarterback and former first-rounder EJ Manuel if he doesn't show improvement this spring and summer, according to WKBW.com, which is claiming through sources that he's in a make-or-break situation.
Manuel is expected to compete with Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor for the starting job. He has proven mediocre at best since arriving in Buffalo with a 58.6 completion rate, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Bills QB EJ Manuel: The offense looks great
|by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com|
|(5/13/15) Bills quarterback EJ Manuel has expressed a love for the offense his team appears set to run this season. There's only one problem - he might not have a chance to run it. The starting job could go to Matt Cassel or Tyrod Taylor.
That didn't stop Manuel from praising what he has seen.
"I just think the dynamics that we have and the personnel that we have, you look at the receivers, running backs and the tight ends ... and the O-linemen getting better, getting stronger, getting nastier," Manuel told WGR-AM. "But with the shifts and motions and the things we'll do to mix it up for a defense is going to be really good. ... Instead of being vanilla, we'll have a whole lot of different looks for opponents to prepare for."
Manuel had previously spoken about 2015 being a particularly important season for him.
|Bills quarterback EJ Manuel enters training camp in a competition for the starting job with veteran Matt Cassel, who was added in a trade this offseason from Minnesota, and free-agent signee Tyrod Taylor. Manuel was thought to be the quarterback of the future for the Bills when he was drafted in the first round in 2013, but he has struggled with injuries and inconsistent play. He was benched last season in favor of Kyle Orton, and Manuel has gone 6-8 as a starter over two seasons with a career 58.6 percent completion rate. He has passed for 2,810 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 15 games (14 starts). While new coach Rex Ryan has expressed confidence in Manuel -- who would have standout weapons in Sammy Watkins, Percy Harvin, Robert Woods, LeSean McCoy and Charles Clay -- we don't expect him to win the job. And even if he does, his Fantasy value is minimal. So ignore him in the majority of leagues on Draft Day.
