Rex Ryan: 'Would be nice' to have great QB, 'excited' about Manuel
|by R.J. White | CBSSports.com|
|(2/18/15) Bills coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday that it "would be nice" to have a great quarterback but that he's "excited" about EJ Manuel, ESPN.com reports.
"I think this league has proven that when you have a great quarterback, you almost -- it's rare that you don't go to the playoffs with a great quarterback," Ryan said. "So obviously that's a priority and not just for our team, but any team in this league. But it's a lot easier said than done.
"It would be nice to get somebody like that. I'm not saying that we have that situation right now. I'm excited about EJ Manuel, though, I'll tell you that much. He's a young man that has some potential. We'll see how that pans out."
Ryan also acknowledged the team's meeting with free-agent quarterback Josh McCown.
"We did bring Josh in," Ryan said. "So obviously there's some interest there on our part. We wanted to bring him in, just to get to know this young man and also for him to get to know us. I'm excited about our coaching staff, and I think that's probably the best selling point that I have right now, along with the players that we have. Obviously, we got an outstanding group of players, too, that I like to show off to a lot of guys."
Manuel and Jeff Tuel are the only two quarterbacks on the Bills' roster.

Bills' Rex Ryan won't commit to EJ Manuel as starting QB
|by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com|
|(1/29/15) When asked about who his starting quarterback would be in 2015, Bills coach Rex Ryan said the team would look at every available option, reports The Buffalo News.
"We're going to exhaust every resource we can," Ryan said. "We'll look at free agents. We'll look at the draft. We'll look at anything."
The Bills have former first-round pick EJ Manuel on their roster, but Ryan said he would not commit to Manuel as his starting quarterback at this time.
"To say that he's definitely going to be the guy, it's way too early to say that," Ryan said.
Bills' Roman: EJ Manuel getting clean slate with new coaching staff
|by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com|
|(1/27/15) Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Tuesday during his introductory press conference quarterback EJ Manuel will get a fresh start with the new coaching staff, per WGR 550. Manuel was benched in favor of veteran Kyle Orton in 2014. Orton has since retired.
"I'm not going to get into specifics. but I definitely think he's done some very good things and displayed some good traits," Roman said. "We just have to get his level of consistency a little bit greater. Really, he and everybody else, once we get thru this evaluation process, we're going to have a very clean slate, once we get going because what they might have been asked to do or done in the past is really not relevant to what we may or may not ask them to do. So to sit here and pontificate about this that and the other, is a little premature."
Manuel is 6-8 as a starter over two NFL seasons. The 2013 first-round pick has a career 58.6 completion rate. He has passed for 2,810 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 15 games (14 starts).
Bills to explore all options for starting quarterback
|by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com|
|(1/19/15) New Bills coach Rex Ryan said Sunday the team will look at all possible options during the offseason to determine who will be the starting quarterback for the team.
Ryan has said he is excited to work with current quarterback EJ Manuel, but he will not just hand the position to the second-year player out of Florida State.
"Will we explore possible veteran free agents or draft picks out there? Absolutely," Ryan said. "We're going to explore everything to add competition because that makes your whole team better."
Manuel was benched after four starts in 2014 in favor of now retired Kyle Orton. He threw for 838 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
New Bills coach Rex Ryan guarantees playoff berth
|by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com|
|(1/14/15) Introduced as Bills head coach Wednesday, Rex Ryan was his usual blustery self.
“I know it’s been 15 years since the Bills have been to the playoffs,” he said. “Get ready. We’re going. We are going.”
Ryan stopped short of guaranteeing a Super Bowl, saying, “I’ll guarantee the pursuit of it.”
He said his message to the team was simple: “We’re going to be playing games in January and so forth – start preparing that way.”
Ryan professed to be “not concerned at all” about his quarterback situation. Though he did not commit to EJ Manuel as the starter, Ryan said the second-year pro “has a lot of traits you look for in a quarterback.”
Kyle Orton announced his retirement following the season. Asked about a possible reunion with Mark Sanchez, Ryan said the team will explore all options.
The Bills went 9-7 this season, then coach Doug Marrone opted out of his contract.
|EJ Manuel played like a rookie in 2013. He had some great moment, and at times he looked lost. He enters his sophomore campaign in 2014 trying to play with more consistency and stay healthy since he missed six games due to knee problems. His final stats from last year were 1,972 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 58.8 percent completions with 186 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He had five games with at least 20 Fantasy points in the 10 starts he was able to make. The Bills revamped their receiving corps with the addition of rookie Sammy Watkins and Mike Williams. Gone is Steve Johnson to the 49ers, so Manuel's top weapons are now Watkins, Williams and Robert Woods. We view Manuel as a No. 2 Fantasy quarterback, who isn't worth drafting in the majority of standard leagues. If he stays healthy he could be used as a bye-week replacement, but let him prove himself first.
