Niners' Jenkins impressive this spring

The San Jose Mercury News says Jenkins had a great week after adding 10 pounds to his frame and working this offseason with quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Jenkins has looked more comfortable in the offense and seems to be playing fast without thinking about his assignment. "He made clutch catches for us when we were moving the ball," offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. "He just made plays and needs to continue that."

Jenkins has chance to start

Jenkins, Quinton Patton and Ricardo Lockette will compete during the remainder of the 49ers' offseason program to replace injured receiver Michael Crabtree (Achilles), coach Jim Harbaugh said Friday on a radio interview. "We'll put Jenkins, Patton, Ricardo Lockette at the same position and let them compete and emerge," Harbaugh said. "The good news is somebody will emerge because they have to."

Jenkins moves up depth chart

It is not known if he will try to play this season. This could help second-year receiver A.J. Jenkins get more playing time behind Anquan Boldin, who should ascend to the No. 1 receiver spot.

GM: Jenkins didn't know the offense
by Dave Richard \| Senior Fantasy Writer (2/21/13) 49ers GM Trent Baalke told reporters Thursday rookie receiver A.J. Jenkins didn't play very much in 2012 because he didn't know the offense. He had one target in three games where he was active. "He's a young guy that came out of a college system that's taken a while to grasp to the pro system," Baalke said. "It's not a work ethic issue, it's not a skill set issue. It's learning the craft at the pro level. And that's a position historically that some have adapted to more quickly than others."

Jenkins promises to be better

Jenkins, who coach Jim Harbaugh got behind in late July when he told experts to not label him a bust, turned out to be exactly that in 2012. Showing up to training camp out of shape and never really getting much of a chance to play, Jenkins finished his rookie year with zero catches. Speaking after the team's loss in Super Bowl XLVII, Jenkins told the Sacramento Bee he's going to turn things around and become "a totally different player." "Obviously, I want to contribute a lot more than I have been," said Jenkins, who plans to work with Colin Kaepernick this offseason. "So I'm going to make that happen and come back bigger, faster, stronger."
