Steelers still plan to draft a receiver early
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(4/2/14) Despite signing free agent receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, the Steelers "will still take a wide receiver with one of their first three picks" in the draft, reports ESPN.com. Pittsburgh lost Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery in free agency while adding Lance Moore and Heyward-Bey.

The Steelers hope second-year wideout Markus Wheaton takes a big step forward and develops into a starter opposite Antonio Brown.

Steelers 'seem committed' to Markus Wheaton
by Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
(3/27/14) The Steelers "seem committed to Markus Wheaton -- or at least giving him every opportunity to win a starting job," reports ESPN.com. The second-year wideout can put a lost rookie season behind him if he seizes the chance to replace Emmanuel Sanders, who signed with the Broncos.

Coach Mike Tomlin said Pittsburgh needs Wheaton to take "a significant step" forward.

Tomlin counting on Markus Wheaton
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(3/25/14) Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday from the NFL Owners Meeting in Orlando that he hopes second-year receiver Markus Wheaton can make the jump from oft-injured rookie to significant contributor in his second season.

Wheaton should very much be in the mix to help replace both Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery, both of whom left the team via free agency.

"I’m looking forward to him taking a significant step. I know that we need him to," Tomlin said per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Wheaton had six catches and two broken fingers last season. It's likely he'll focus strictly on receiving work and not special teams.

Steelers GM hopes frustrating year is behind Markus Wheaton
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/20/14) Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert told the media Wednesday that receiver Markus Wheaton struggled in 2013 because of his late arrival to the team and because he broke a couple of fingers.

Wheaton wasn't allowed to join the Steelers until late in their OTA workouts because of league rules. Then when he did finally work his way into the receiving rotation he broke a finger. Once it was fixed he came back and broke another finger. Colbert confirmed that Wheaton had offseason surgeries and that his fingers are healed.

"We're hoping he has a nice year next year," he said.

Steelers to undergo changes at receiver?
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(2/13/14) Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders is slated to be a free agent this spring and there's a realistic chance the Steelers won't make an effort to re-sign him.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes that to be the case. In a recent chat, Dulac said he thinks the Steelers will let him go and stand pat with the receivers they have left along with drafting a tall wideout, which they've reportedly told Ben Roethlisberger. Receiver Markus Wheaton figures to play more and improve drastically.

Sanders posted career-highs in 2013, catching 67 passes for 740 yards and six touchdowns. Wheaton played sparingly and had just six catches for 64 yards.
