Steelers WR Markus Wheaton accepts permanent move to slot

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(6/19/15) Third-year receiver Markus Wheaton had his eyes set on playing opposite Steelers stud Antonio Brown this season. But the emergence of Martavis Bryant has Wheaton relegated to the slot position.

He's not complaining about that - he ran 119 routes from the slot a year ago, per Pro Football Focus. That has allowed Wheaton to brace for a permanent move.

"The plays I had last year were customized for me," he told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "...I'm going to see a lot more. ... I wouldn't say that it is out of my comfort zone, but there are things I need to learn that are different from the outside. Being on the field last year, I learned a lot in terms of reading the defenses and seeing things. Moving me inside, I am still seeing a lot of the same things."

Wheaton enjoyed a semi-breakout season in 2014 with 53 catches for 644 yards and two touchdowns.

Martavis Bryant will get 'every opportunity' to be No. 2 receiver

by Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst
(3/19/15) The Steelers will give second-year pro Martavis Bryant "every opportunity this summer to claim the No. 2 receiver spot" opposite superstar Antonio Brown, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley said what Bryant accomplished in the second half of last season was a "big thing."

“We are looking for him to come in and make a push against Markus Wheaton for that No. 2 spot and continue to give us big-time production, specifically in the red area where a big target like that can make a big impact,” Haley said.

A fourth-round pick out of Clemson, Bryant was inactive the first six games before catching six touchdowns in the first four games he played. He finished with 26 catches for 549 yards and eight scores, adding five grabs for 61 yards and a touchdown in the playoff loss to Baltimore.

“When young guys come in at the receiver position and contribute early like he did, it is a big thing,” Haley said. “He took a lot of pressure off Antonio Brown and Markus Wheaton … he really had a big impact on our offense. He is a guy we are going to work real hard throughout the offseason and, like all young players, he should make progress from year one to year two.”

Wheaton caught 53 passes for 644 yards and two scores while playing every game.

Steelers' Troy Polamalu doubtful to play Sunday vs. Chiefs

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(12/19/14) The Steelers released their final injury report for Week 16’s game against the Chiefs and safety Troy Polamalu (knee) is listed as doubtful.

Cornerback Ike Taylor (shoulder) is also listed as doubtful. Tight end Matt Spaeth (elbow) is the only player listed as questionable.

The following players are listed as probable: William Gay, Marcus Gilbert, James Harrison, Steve McLendon, Heath Miller, Mike Mitchell, Maurkice Pouncey, Ben Roethlisberger and Markus Wheaton.

The Steelers are 3-point favorites.

Trio of Steelers make strong contributions to Sunday win

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(12/14/14) As usual, no Steelers receiver could match what Antonio Brown produced Sunday against Atlanta. But a trio certainly helped the team to victory.

The best of the bunch were tight end Heath Miller, whose 26-yard snag late in the third quarter helped him finish with 68 yards on four receptions, and wideout Markus Wheaton, who made good on all five targets for 66 yards. Martavis Bryant pitched in with three catches for 31 yards.

Steelers' Markus Wheaton gets more involved in loss to Saints

by Brandon Wise | CBSSports.com
(11/30/14) Steelers wide receiver Markus Wheaton bounced back from a sluggish performance last week with five catches for 61 yards on sunday against the Saints.

Wheaton has struggled to stay involved in the Steelers' passing game this season, only cracking 50 yards five times.

Wheaton will look to build off this performance next week against the Bengals.
