Ronnie Hillman wants bigger role
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(12:53 pm ET) Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman is out to prove he can be the starter in Denver this season. He knows people knock him because of his size and see him better suited to be just a change-of-pace back.

"You get that when you're a smaller guy," Hillman said, according to NFL.com. "You can't take the pounding, but I just brush it off. Of course you hear things. I'm not going to sit hear and say I don't hear what they say, but you just got to let it go. Obviously, getting 22 carries in negative 13-degree weather against the Ravens (in the divisional playoffs), they shouldn't have much else to say about that if they're paying attention."

The report says Hillman put on 15 pounds of muscle in the offseason and now weighs 200 pounds. He said the Broncos actually want him to drop weight and play in the 190-to-195 range.

Hillman is competing for the starting job with rookie Montee Ball. Knowshon Moreno is also in the mix for playing time now that Willis McGahee has been released.

Ball gets boost following McGahee's ouster
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/13/13) The Broncos must like what they've seen so far from rookie Montee Ball -- they cut some of his competition. On Thursday the Broncos released veteran Willis McGahee, eliminating the only likely running back who would have taken from Ball's role as an inside rusher. Denver still has Ronnie Hillman and Knowshon Moreno as part of their backfield. "For me, I’m approaching every day like I did before when he was here and even before when he wasn’t here, during OTAs," Ball said. "I’m just going to keep doing what I’ve been doing. ... Obviously, my goal is to be the starter."
Ball, Hillman improving pass protection
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer
(6/12/13) In what is an encouraging step for both backs, the Broncos official team website cited both Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman as improved pass protectors in the backfield. They had already shown an ability to run effectively but protecting Peyton Manning is the top priority for the running back in Denver -- and the key to getting on the field. "I keep narrowing down my mistakes in practice. Today I had no mistakes, just a bad position on a block," Ball said Tuesday. "But other than that I did pretty good today and I can see that it’s all starting to come along."
Manning: Ball will be a contributor
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/30/13) Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning said Thursday the team is counting on rookie running back Montee Ball this season. "I have taken Montee after practice each day and just kind of going through plays, going through games, getting him comfortable hearing audibles at the line of scrimmage," Manning said. "Because we are going to count on him in a big way this year. He’s a rookie, but coach [John] Fox is not going to bring him along slowly. We are going to put him in there and make him a contributor this year. So, the more repetitions we can get out here talking football, talking scenarios, I think the more comfortable he’ll be once the regular season gets here.”
Ball expected to make 'impact'
by Jamey Eisenberg | Senior Fantasy Writer
(5/22/13) Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase said Wednesday the team has high expectations for rookie running back Montee Ball. “He’s trying to pick up the offense," Gase said. "He’s a rookie. There are a lot of things going on, and he’s trying to pick it up as quick as possible. Obviously drafting him in the second round, we’re looking for him to make some kind of impact for us and be able to be on the field five, six plays and work together with that group of running backs.”
