Lions unsure if Travis Swanson will start at center

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(5/3/15) When the Lions drafted Travis Swanson a year ago, the idea was for him to emerge as a starting center for the franchise by 2015.

There's now some doubt, at least that's what the Lions themselves are saying after acquiring veteran Manny Ramirez in a trade on Thursday during the NFL draft.

"I don't know," Lions offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn said, via the Detroit Free Press. "And I'm not trying to be evasive, I just don't know. What is it, May 2, 3rd? The depth kind of develops itself, which is a nice thing. Going through OTAs, mini-camp, training camp, it always takes care of itself."

Swanson is still the favorite to start at center, though it does appear the Lions want to put him in a competitive situation.

Lions looking for Travis Swanson to become starting center

by Jason Butt | CBSSports.com
(2/6/15) By releasing veteran Dominic Raiola earlier this offseason, the Lions appear ready to hand the starting center job over to Travis Swanson.

The Lions selected Swanson in the third round of the 2014 NFL draft out of Arkansas.

“I know that nothing’s guaranteed,” Swanson told the Lions' official website. “As far as my mindset, that wasn’t something I was going to think about. Yes, that’s how it looks on paper, but you can’t be settled on that, especially early in the year.”

Swanson did get some playing time this year at right guard due to an in-season injury to Larry Warford. Swanson started at center in the regular-season finale against Green Bay after Raiola was suspended for stomping on Bears defensive lineman Ego Ferguson's leg.

Travis Swanson will compete to be Lions' starting center in 2015

by Michael Hurcomb | CBSSports.com
(1/23/15) With center Dominic Raiola being told he will not be back on the Lions' roster in 2015, the attention nows turns to the development of Travis Swanson, who was drafted in the third round in 2014 to be Detroit's future center.

“I thought he made good progress last year,” Lions general manager Martin Mayhew at the Senior Bowl, per the team's official website. “I think this is a really important offseason for him, obviously. He’s going to have an opportunity to get in there and compete for that job at center.”

Swanson started four games at guard and one at center during his rookie season. He struggled when he first joined the starting lineup, but by season's end he was much improved. In his final two starts, including the playoff game against Dallas, Swanson finished each of those games with a positive grade from Pro Football Focus.

“I think it’s important this offseason that he continues to show the same type of improvement he showed last year,” Mayhew said. “There’s nothing promised to anybody, but I’m excited about the potential that he showed last year with his ability to get into some games, finish some games for us and start some games for us at guard and one game at center. But he’s got a ways to go in terms of being a great player in this league."

Lions' Travis Swanson avoids serious injury to knee

by Sean d'Oliveira | CBSSports.com
(1/5/15) Lions guard Travis Swanson told reporters on Monday the injury he suffered to his knee during Sunday's game against the Cowboys is not serious and he’ll be ready for offseason workouts, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Swanson was forced to leave the game after injuring his knee, but coach Jim Caldwell said the injury does not require surgery as of Monday.

Lions G Travis Swanson injures knee, questionable to return

by R.J. White | CBSSports.com
(1/4/15) Lions guard Travis Swanson suffered a knee injury in Sunday's Wild Card game against the Cowboys and is questionable to return.

Swanson, who drew the start Sunday in place of the injured Larry Warford, had his leg rolled up from behind during the team's 99-yard touchdown drive. He'll be evaluated in the locker room before it can be determined whether he'll be able to continue playing. With the injury, the Lions are down to third-string players at both right guard and right tackle.
