Andre Holmes comes back down to earth

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/20/14) Raiders wide receiver Andre Holmes, who blew up for 121 yards and two touchdowns Week 6 against San Diego, took a long time to get going Week 7 against Arizona, catching his first pass about midway through the fourth quarter. Not surprisingly, he finished with just three catches for 34 yards.

It's not like he was invisible before then. He nearly had a great catch on a long pass along the sidelines in the second quarter, but it was ruled incomplete. He did have only two targets apart from his three receptions, though.

Clearly, it was a disappointing showing, but it's not like quarterback Derek Carr forgot about him. Only James Jones and Darren McFadden had more targets, tying for the team lead with eight. Holmes spent much of the game covered by Patrick Peterson, who remains one of the better cornerbacks in the NFL. Holmes still has incredible play-making ability and will have better days.

But this performance shows why you can't trust him on an every-week basis yet. His matchup Week 8 against Cleveland is another tricky one because of cornerback Joe Haden, who has struggled at times this season but limited the Jaguars' Cecil Shorts to three catches for 12 yards in Week 7. You might want to leave Holmes on your bench for this one.

Raiders backup pass catchers don't amount to much Week 7

by Chris Cwik | CBSSports.com
(10/19/14) The Raiders backup pass catchers didn't do all that much Week 7 against the Cardinals.

Brice Butler led the team in receiving, but all of it came on a long catch. In the second quarter, Derek Carr found Butler on a deep pass over the middle that went for 55 yards. It was Butler's only catch of the game.

Andre Holmes had three catches, gaining 34 yards. Mychal Rivera picked up one reception, gaining 18 yards. Denarius Moore also caught one ball, gaining 13 yards. Jamize Olawale gained 7 yards on his only reception of the game. Brian Leonhardt also caught one pass, gaining 4 yards.

They will take on the Browns Week 8.

Emerging WR Andre Holmes bringing high hopes to Raiders

by Marty Gitlin | CBSSports.com
(10/16/14) The Raiders are hoping that wide receiver Andre Holmes is a late bloomer. Though he has been in the league since 2011, he has only recently begun showing glimplses of his potential.

The 26-year-old Holmes, who finally emerged to catch 25 passes for 431 yards for Oakland last season, is far exceeding that pace in 2014, thanks greatly to a Week 6 performance against San Diego in which he caught four passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Included was a 77-yard strike from Derek Carr on the third play of the game. He has 15 receptions for 269 yards on the year.

"I hope he can become a guy that the quarterback continues to feel really comfortable with," Tony Sparano told ESPN.com. "The catches that he's made since he's been here have been those kind of catches, contested catches, down the field, ball is in the air and he's jumping over somebody; he's really making the hard catch."

Holmes, however, has struggled with dependability. He also had two drops against the Chargers.

Not a big enough role for Brice Butler

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/14/14) Raiders wide receiver Brice Butler made his presence known in Week 6 against San Diego, catching three passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. But in terms of targets, he was still the third wheel in a receiving corps led by Andre Holmes and James Jones.

And that was on a career day for rookie quarterback Derek Carr.

Carr won't always be so good, and the big plays won't always be so easy to come by. Remember, 47 of Butler's yards came on his touchdown grab in the third quarter. Remove it from the equation, and he was the same peripheral contributor he has been all season.

Jamey Eisenberg doesn't rank Butler especially high in his Playing the Waiver Wire column, and I agree with that assessment. He doesn't have a big enough role in a consistently prolific passing attack.

Andre Holmes good with any quarterback

by Scott White | Senior Fantasy Writer
(10/13/14) Ever since he blew up with Matt McGloin under center for the last quarter-plus of Week 4 against the Dolphins, I've made a big deal about how good Raiders wide receiver Andre Holmes is with the backup quarterback, even lamenting the quick return of starter Derek Carr Week 6 against San Diego.

Turns out McGloin isn't the key to Holmes' success.

Holmes and Carr were in sync right away, hooking up on a 77-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Holmes simply beat the defense, and Carr lobbed it to him for what turned out to be an easy score. The two then connected for a 6-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Holmes led the Raiders with 121 receiving yards, but of course, most of them came on that first touchdown. Perhaps even more interesting, then, he led the team with eight targets.

He's shown flashes in the past but hasn't gotten the opportunity to make the most of them. Now that has it, he's worth adding across the board in Fantasy.
