Coach notices Egnew's improvement

"He feels more confident about his ability and he’s starting to understand his role in the offense better," Philblin told the Palm Beach Post. "Maybe we know a little bit more about him. We put him in a position when he can make some more of those plays. It’s been encouraging."

Egnew expects to play
by Jamey Eisenberg \| Senior Fantasy Writer (5/20/13) The Miami Herald reports that Dolphins tight end Michael Egnew has been training in mixed martial arts three days a week. “Doing that, you learn how to compete," Egnew said. “I expect to play this year. I’ve gotten stronger. I’m absolutely ready.”

Philbin not high on Egnew
by Jamey Eisenberg \| Senior Fantasy Writer (3/19/13) The Miami Herald reports that Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said Tuesday at the NFL owners meeting in Phoenix that second-year tight end Michael Egnew has a long way to go. “We just didn’t quite see it on the practice field enough to feel like he was ready to make a meaningful contribution or give him a big chunk of the game plan," Philbin said. "We didn’t see enough from him in special teams where we could validate, ‘OK, Even if he doesn’t have a big role here maybe he can have a big role there.’ So we just didn’t see enough on the tape to warrant an active spot most of the season.” The big problem, Philbin said, was “his play speed. If I had to say one thing, it would be his play speed. Get that up! Get off the ball quicker, get a better release off the line of scrimmage, get down field quicker. Just speed it up.”

Egnew has long way to go
by Jamey Eisenberg \| Senior Fantasy Writer (2/22/13) The Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins are hoping to upgrade at tight end this offseason, but they have to find out if Michael Egnew can be part of the solution. General manager Jeff Ireland recently expressed optimism in Egnew, who was a bust as a rookie in 2012. Said Ireland: “I see a 6-4, 260-pound guy who runs a 4.65. I see a guy having vertical speed down the middle of the field. I see a big guy that moves well. I see a developing player with his hand in the dirt. I see a competitive guy. I can name several players at that position that did very little in their first year and became big time playmakers. That’s a position that develops differently. Other than quarterback, that position is the most mentally and physically demanding.” But here’s one of the problems with Egnew, per the report: According to a teammate, he lined up on the wrong side during pregame work before the season-finale and had troubling remembering the plays.
